LANSING [Michigan] – A Christian Nativity at the Capitol is out, but a Satanist group from Detroit will erect its own "holiday display" at the statehouse.

The display, which depicts a snake wrapped around the Satanic cross presenting a book as a holiday gift, will be featured on the northeast lawn at the Capitol Dec. 21 to 23, said Jex Blackmore, a member of the Detroit chapter of the Satanic Temple. The cross reads, "The greatest gift is knowledge."

"Encouraging families to have important discussions and to learn from each other and to spend the holidays promoting knowledge ... is just something we think is important," Blackmore, whose phone number begins with the digits 666, said today.

You should treasure your country, where such things are allowed and everyone has the right to express their opinions.

Also, what are you griping about concerning the display? It isn't scrapped because of satanic influences, but because no one can be asked to tend to it. You're so eager to tear down, but so unwilling to build up..

The Nativity, meanwhile, has been scrapped. Truscott said today the Nativity was approved but the out-of-state person backing it couldn't find someone to put up and tear down the display each day. That's necessary because Capitol rules forbid permanent displays.

I really wondered why this would be allowed when the nativity scene was scrapped, but thankfully the article talked about that:

The Nativity, meanwhile, has been scrapped. Truscott said today the Nativity was approved but the out-of-state person backing it couldn't find someone to put up and tear down the display each day. That's necessary because Capitol rules forbid permanent displays.

So I say, go for it. And no one's displays deserve to be vandalized, by the way.

If they're going to allow W religion to put up a display, they better be ready to let X, Y, and Z religion do the same.

We could stop all of this nonsense by doing the right (and legal) thing of not allowing any religion to put up displays on federal property, but people seem to try their best to get around this...

How is a satanic display over the winter solstice a hijack of a “Christian” holiday that occurs two days later? It’s also sad that the nativity scene had to be sponsored by someone out of state, and apparently no one in Michigan could put it up and take it down every day. I guess that Michigan State Capitol Commission member John Truscott should be less worried about someone hijacking Christmas and concentrate on the apparent apathetic attitude of Christians in Lansing.

Sorry but the promotion of Satan is a step too far, the Devil (Lucifer) whether you believe in him or not is our enemy and wants to destroy us and the fact people are approving to have this display up is approving what he is and what he has done. Especially in the time when many Christians celebrate Christmas for the coming birth of Jesus our Savior you are telling us which side you choose by welcoming a Satanic Devil display.

I think it's sick and extremely sad that this is approved, I am sure another less demonic display could be erected if the Nativity Scene was not possible.

Your personal feelings on the matter do not change the United States Constitution or justify vandalism. The local Christians in the area are more than welcome to put up a Nativity scene, but it seems that even the person out of state doesn't care enough to find someone to take care of it every day.
you are telling us which side you choose by welcoming a Satanic Devil display.
I'm taking a completely neutral stance. I realize you don't live in the US, and I don't know how this works in Scotland, but this is what the US Constitution requires for government-owned property. :) I'm sorry if Christian privilege has led you to think that religious neutrality is an attack on you. I can't speak for the motivations of this Satanist group, but my support of their rights is not akin to choosing a side. I support the rights of Christians just as strongly.

Why was the nativity removed?

If one religion is allowed, then all religions must be allowed. It doesn't say only one religion can be displayed at a time.

Destruction of the display is criminal no matter who does it.

It wasn't removed. It was approved but never put up because the person backing it (out of state) didn't have the funding to pay for someone to put it up and take it down and maintain it.

Apparently, you can't keep any of these displays up overnight because they can't be "permanent." The person who was sponsoring the Nativity scene was out-of-state and couldn't find anyone to take it down every evening.

This is my hometown. I would've torn down the nativity and whatnot if I still lived there.

This is just people stirring the pot. I think they were hired by people within the FFRF, to be honest. "Ooh...let's rile the Christians up" because that's the only reason that group exists.

That would mean, like, getting away from the couch and doing something besides whining and complaining.

It was not removed. They were unable to follow the rules which seem to be that any display has to be removed every evening and set up again the next day. Nominally because no display can be permanent. It would not surprise me in the least that part of it is also to avoid vandalism.

Quite possibly.

Also- for those around that don't know- the majority of Satanists don't actually believe in Satan.
