That is what I believe. I realize this does not fit the narrative and talking points of many doctrines; but the Gog and Magog in the Revelation goes after the church worldwide (the breadth of the earth is, by definition, the entire earth). The "camp of the saints" is depicted in the New Covenant as the Church, and its early members:
"Which thing I [Paul] also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them." -- Acts 26:10
"Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both their's and our's:" -- 1Cor 1:2
"Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:" -- Eph 1:1
"Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints." -- Jude 1:3
.
A "thousand years" earlier than Satan's assault, the beast and the Great harlot (Babylon) also made war with the saints and/or killed them:
"And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. . . And there was given unto him [the beast] a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. . . And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations." -- Rev 13:1, 5, 7
"And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. . . And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth." -- Rev 18:2, 24
The Great harlot was identified by Christ as first-century Jerusalem due to its responsibility for the blood of the prophets:
". . . I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation." -- Luke 11:49-51
"Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem." -- Luke 13:33
.
Gog and Magog in Ezekiel 38 & 39 were ancient armies going after Israel after their return from captivity, and before the days of Christ, since He ministered in the last days:
"And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes." -- Eze 38:16
"God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;" -- Heb 1:1-2
"The specification in our prophet, however, is rendered more definite by the following statement that the attack was to be made . . . in the last of the years, which, in prophetic designations of time, denotes that which immediately preceded the coming of the Messiah. This again is equivalent to . . . the last of the days, ver. 16." [E Henderson, 'The Book of The Prophet Ezekiel,' Warren F. Draper, 1870, Eze 38:8, p.191]
Other ways to identify ancient Israel, and the reason for their punishment, are as follows:
1. The people of Israel had been previously brought out of captivity:
"After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, . . . upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land." -- Eze 38:8, 12
2. Israel was polluting the Lords name:
"So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel." -- Eze 39:7
3. Israel was to be sent
again into captivity by the Lord, and
later restored to their land:
"And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword. . . When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;" -- Eze 39:23, 27
4. The weapons and mode of transportation used against Israel were ancient:
"I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand. . . And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years:" -- Eze 39:2-3, 9
"Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord God." -- Eze 39:20
"And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army:" -- Eze 38:15
5. The purpose of attacking Israel was to plunder her silver, gold, cattle and goods:
"To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land. Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?" -- Eze 38:12-13
6. The only recorded instance of Israel going into captivity between the return from Babylon and the days of Christ occurred during the days of Antiochus IV, about 175 BC:
"When the Jews returned out of Babylon, repossessing their own land, they dwelt safely, confidently, without fear or disquietment therein, for four hundred and thirty years, saith Sanctius; after which time Antiochus did sorely vex them, and interrupt their peace, which they thought would be everlasting. So did Demetrius, Nicanor, and others, as in the Maccabees is evident." [William Greenhill, 'An Exposition of the Prophet Ezekiel,' James Nichol, 1864, Eze 38:8, p.756]
"A storm comes suddenly, violently, with noise, and doth much hurt, breaking and bearing down all before it: such should the coming of Gog be. Dan. xi. 40, 41, it is said, "The king of the north shall come against the king of the south like a whirlwind. He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown." This is spoken of Antiochus, whom divers expositors make to be Gog." [William Greenhill, 'An Exposition of the Prophet Ezekiel,' James Nichol, 1864, Eze 38:9, pp.756-57]
"And when [Antiochus] had pillaged the whole city, some of the inhabitants he slew, and some he carried captive, together with their wives and children, so that the multitude of those captives that were taken alive amounted to about ten thousand." [Flavius Josephus, 'The Complete Works: Antiquities of the Jews,' Christian Classics Ethereal Library, Book XII.5.4, Eze 39:28, p.648]
"And the merchants of the country, hearing the fame of them, took silver and gold very much, with servants, and came into the camp to buy the children of Israel for slaves: a power also of Syria and of the land of the Philistines joined themselves unto them." -- 1Mac 3:41
"Now it is said, This shall be in the latter days, namely, in the latter days of the Old-Testament church; so the mischief that Antiochus did to Israel was; but in the latter days of the New-Testament church another like enemy should arise, that should in like manner be defeated." [Matthew Henry, 'Henry Commentary Vol IV (Isa to Mal),' Christian Classics Ethereal Library, 1712, Ezek.38:16, p.1394]
"Our translators have added unwalled (vs.38:11,) but quite unnecessarily, since this idea is sufficiently expressed afterwards in the verse. The word . . . properly signifies open country, in contradistinction to towns and cities. Compare Esther ix. 19. The unsuspecting confidence of the restored Hebrews is here graphically described. What is stated may have literally been the case, or the language may be expressive of the contempt with which Antiochus regarded them, conceiving that they would fall an easy prey into his hands." [E. Henderson, 'The Book of The Prophet Ezekiel,' Warren F. Draper, 1870, Eze 38:11, pp.191-92]
7. The forces that came against Israel were thoroughly defeated by both God and Israel with ancient weapons of war; not simply by fire from God out of heaven as depicted in Revelation 20:9,
"It is here foretold that this furious formidable enemy should be utterly cut off in this attempt upon Israel, and that it should issue in his own ruin. This is supposed by many to have its accomplishment in the many defeats given by the Maccabees to the forces of Antiochus and the remarkable judgments of God executed upon his own person, for he died of sore diseases. But these things are here foretold, as usual, in figurative expressions, which we are not to look for the literal accomplishment of, and yet they might be fulfilled nearer the letter than we know of." [Matthew Henry, 'Henry Commentary Vol IV (Isa to Mal),' Christian Classics Ethereal Library, 1712, Ezek 38:18-20, p.1394]
.
Therefore, a reasonable conclusion to the matter would be that the Gog and Magog of the Revelation are nations throughout the earth that attack the world-wide Church; while Ezekiel's Gog and his allies attacked ancient Israel.
