A Non-conformist: Somebody who does not go with the flow, but would much rather be an independent thinker. Symptoms often include not liking to be categorized, doing one's "own thing," and resisting authority.

So, do you consider yourself a non-conformist?

In some ways, yes. With regards to authority, I will resist if I feel there is a good reason to, otherwise it is not to my benefit and often not to others.

Non-conformity for it's own sake isn't individualism, I see it more as a rebellion against some group or social situation where someone feels unable to be an individual in much of any sense.

Yeah, this is often plainly obvious when you have 'non-conformity' as a characteristic for a entire, fairly well-defined subculture that simply isn't mainstream (or is perceived to not be mainstream, regardless of evidence that it's at least somewhat common...like mallgoths).

There's a big difference between using 'non-conformity' as an identity, and simply not caring about whether you're conforming or not.

Yip, I confirm that I conform to the non-conformist behavior, like everyone else ...

Very much so. But I wouldn't say that I have problems with authority, I don't. Only those who abuse their authority do I have a problem with and struggle to obey. But overall no, it's not an issue for me. I understand the reasons God places authority in our lives and do my best to appreciate it.

Wouldn't affirming that I was a non-conformist fundamentally violate this principle?

I've never identified as "non-conformist" but I've always felt very different from everybody else. It's interesting, though, because I went to a Spiritual Conference this weekend and was able to see how unique and similar we ALL are! We all have the same basic desires in our hearts and we all struggle with feeling like we don't measure up. So I guess I do still know myself to be different and not conforming to a societal standard, but I think probably *most* people feel that way.

Yes, im a non conformist because im counter culture . I don't conform to Secular Humanism but rather have made the Creator my God instead making myself my god. Every true Christian should be a non conformist to the Worlds philosophies precisely as the Bible says in Colossians 2:8 and other places. (WHen you do, expect lots of shunning/ridicule/and unpopularity...but don't let it bother you. Jesus went thru the same stuff).

LOL. I thought the same thing.
LOL, I was thinking that when I created this, actually.

It's like, "We'll know who the true non-conformists are because they'll vote other/neither."

I already have a pretty good idea who the nonconformists here are because there are some people who always vote "other" in my polls and don't like to be categorized? lol.

No, I wouldn't say that I am. Part of me wants to say "Oops." ^_^ I would call myself an independent thinker, but that's pretty much it.

The private school socialization is strong with this one. :sorry:

I don't have Facebook, I have no idea what Skype is - or even what it does, my mobile phone is from the cro-magnon era, and the last time I watched television I was waiting to bring in the new millennium.

Non-conformist? Possibly. Reclusive weirdo? Er... More than likely.

I used to have more of a non-conformist mindset.

Eventually being seen as a weirdo and freak wears you down, and you find it more and more tempting to go back into the closet and pretend to think like everyone else.
