I had to use the Commentary on Isaiah. His words are filled with meat adn I have trouble understanding it sometimes. I read the Chapter in context and still had trouble pulling out its message. So here is what it says:

(from Matthew Henry)
If we shut our eyes against the light of Divine truth, it is just with God to hide from our eyes the things that belong to our peace. The sins of those who profess themselves God's people, are worse than the sins of others. And the sins of a nation bring public judgments, when not restrained by public justice. Men may murmur under calamities, but nothing will truly profit while they reject Christ and his gospel.

I really liked that matthew henry quote.

I suppose the phrase "good people" should be defined first. Unbelievers that do good acts or just believers or what?

I feel that since mans good work are filthy rags to God; Why should he show favortism? Plus, we never really know to what will result from this "bad thing". The person could meet the love of their life or be saved.
Sometimes God will pick out believers to do "bad things" too, so that they may grow in there faith.

Cool passage Gerry, I have never read that one.

The story of Job is a great example of this too.

Job 5:17
"Behold, how happy is the man whom God reproves,
So do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.

For He inflicts pain, and gives relief;
He wounds, and His hands also heal."

Job was a righteous man in the eyes of God and yet he went through some real nasty things. But I think the greatest thing of importance to remember through any trial is that as Christians, God is in control of what happens to us. He will not allow anything to happen to us that we can not bear. Nothing with happen to us that He did not allow. Whatever pain he allows, He will heal. Whatever wounds He allows, He will heal.

1 Corinthians 10:13
"No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it."

And this is one of my favorites! These verses make me want to shout "Yea God!"

Romans 8:35-39
"Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Just as it is written,
"FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG;
WE WERE CONSIDERED AS SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED."
But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Don't you love Matthew Henry? When you read again what you just wrote, it does indeed put 9-11 in in perspective, doesn't it! Awesome! Even though that was not the application I was going for here, I do appreciate you posting Henry's comments.

I did not intend to be so technical with this post. It was my opinion that the application of the verse made it's own definitions clear. But you are correct when you infer that God is always "in charge". That He surely is.

Thanks for your awesome supporting post! Your Scripture references are very appropriate and pertinent.

That's right. Some people think they are good enough, and God can't really mean it that if they don't turn to Him they go to hell. But He does. No one is good enough compared to His holiness.

Even though it is a different subject from the post, you are, of course, correct. No one is or ever could be "good" enough, on their own to go to Heaven. We do that by the Mercy and Grace of God, and our faith in the atoning work of Christ on the cross.
