If you acculturate your people to think the experience of the liturgical life of the Church is pretty much The Tribe At Prayer, you shouldn’t be surprised when their loosening of tribal bonds through intermarriage results in a falling away from the Church. I have two Greek friends who were raised Greek Orthodox but no longer are (one’s Evangelical, one’s Catholic) because, as they put it, Christianity was all Greek to them growing up.
And thus the accusation that it is the Church's fault that they do not "adopt " enough....:sorry:

Yeah I disagree with both the Archdiocesan statement as well as the commentator...

Was there a specific part of the article you disagreed with or agreed with - and regardless of what it was, I'd be curious as to why you felt that way.

Christianity is simply not the flavor of the month. Every group has diminishing numbers. The problem is that this is a mobile society with a small Orthodox precense. People move away , get married and simply server ties from their roots. On top of being a mobile society its also a secular society. No one takes religious affiliation into account when selecting a spouse. If one spouse is a non-orthodox nominalists who do you expect will get the kids up and ready for church?

How are the Jews successful in preserving their identity? ?? They do not disburse into far away regions. Isolation leads to extinction. They remain concentrated in short distances from each other. When the affluent orthodox Jews wanted to move out to the suburbs from brooklyn , their rabbi told them to stay put and they did. Yes assimilation is the enemy!

Secondly because we do live in such a secular society, for most people faith is no big deal, its not something valuable that they'll want to preserve. Most kids simply don't grow up with any awareness of what they have. They will never experience the joy of having friends and family calling them up to wish them a happy name day, you won't be roasting an entire lamb for Easter, they won't go to church on a Palm Sunday and see a dozen of their relatives and cousins there. In fact the trend now is to call Holy week "spring recess" and go on vacation to the Caribbean. Throw in the fact now that most families are non existant. They are either single moms or divorced, no fathers, that too erodes any hope of making church life an actual community.

At this point its an irreversible trend.
