• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I really really really want to and need to lose weight but my binge eating disorder is causing complications.

As soon as I start counting calories or anything like that I become obsessed. I see everything in terms of calories. When I know I have blown it due to a binge I try to restrict my intake to try and make up for it and end up bingeing again because I feel so guilty about it. I also end up weighing myself every single day.

When I am not trying to lose weight I can manage my binges a lot better but my weight doesnt move. I am not sure what to do. I do not want to be 127kg for the rest of my life :/

I think it is possible for someone with BED to lose weight.. But it's a complicated question.

Eating disorders are about a lot more than weight or food. Have you ever seen a therapist to discuss this (and other) issues? Do you know of some why you developed an eating disorder and/or what triggers it to continue now?

I would recommend not focusing on calories, restricting your intake, etc. This sort of obsessiveness/restriction/guilt can be common to people with eating disorders (of any type) and just perpetuates the cycle.

Rather, try to focus on moderation (I know that's easier said than done) and the reasons behind your ED. Eat regular meals and snacks, try to listen to your body and what it needs, do not out law foods because they are "bad", etc. Do not restrict your intake too much as it will just lead to more binges.

I have just downloaded a photo food diary app on my phone to get a visual log of what I am eating. I am also thinking that i should do at least 1 song of zumba each day to start with.

I think the food diary could be helpful if you are able to use it without becoming obsessive. If the obsessiveness and such creeps back in then I would stop it.

I do really like the zumba idea.. I think finding some exercise that you have fun with (I am assuming you enjoy zumba) can be a great help - both mentally and physically.

I have been in therapy to resolve the problems I had at the root of my depression and anxiety which was really beneficial but this did not affect my weight or eating issues at all.

I think I had really bad food programming as a kid with my grandparents on all 3 sides.

This has been confirmed by a recovery blog I just found.

Maybe it would be beneficial to talk more specifically about the food issues in therapy?

I relate (from my mother and older sister in my case).

I did before my sessions ended :) The only thing that came of it was that I had developed this idea that these foods (that I love to death) was a reward.

Hi DGirl, are you under weight or over weight?

Or in the middle for your height?

The 'best' thing of all is to consume a healthy breakfast, one meal a day, (nutritious), a banana and two pieces of fruit a day, a yoghurt, and follow advice from your practitioner/doctor.

Exercise in moderation!

My suggestion is to pray to Jesus and Our Lady Mary for His Loving Wisdom and guidance while focussing on His Stations of His Holy Cross!

Kindest wishes

Hi DGirl,

If you eat sultana bran at breakfast with or without fruit, Ryvitas x 2 large with salad and tuna or chicken or a breast fillet with vegies or salad at lunch, 3 pieces of fruit during the day and a low skim yoghurt daily with or without exercise (in your temporary situation with your ankle injured) just floor leg exercises provided your back is fine, you will lose weight.

Floor exercise:

Lay flat on your back with neck on floor, crink one leg and raise the other leg up and down for 5 minutes. Then, do the same procedure with your other leg up down, in towards you, then back up in the air again. This exercise is safe and affects hips, backside and legs to lose weight while gently toning.

When your ankle has healed, doing 30 minutes of walking or jogging per day with or without a dog/pet is the key while removing all rubbish/junk food out of your household and refraining from purchasing rubbish.

Kindest wishes

Quit weighing yourself. Knowing how much you weigh doesn't take the pounds off.
You can binge. the less the better. the better the foods, the better.
The primary cause of positive results though is healthy active living. Liven up.

Dance.
Sing.
Run.
exercise even when your sitting. (it may be a good idea to sit on a towel to keep the place clean*)

don't think in calories. Scientists are crazy.
Does a deer eat protein? NO!
does a cow? NO!
a moose? NO!
yet they grow bigger and stronger than people even faster.

Do not concern yourself with atheist theories and methods. They praise themselves for what God does for them.

Be active. God made people to be like Children. Children are endlessly full of energy because they do not see the need to stop. They do not thirst for food until they are hungry or they are tempted by it!
Do not tempt yourself and your desires will be sated.
Sate your desires by looking for more appreciable things to do.
When you eat less you'll feel prouder and you'll work harder and you will lose whatever weight you want to get rid of.

God Bless You.
and Good luck.

Amen

I think its very possible to anyone to lose weight by exercise and small healthier portions.

the problem to weight loss in my oppinion is depression and anxiety. Need to address both and keep moving anyways, if need to have your body dragged to exercise, take sun and exercise, do it! Tell your family and friends to drag you even if you dont feel like doing nothing. And ask them to not let you come up with excuses too. Boot Camp wake up call..and I am saying that particularly for people with health issues who have loose weight or "die"..if not will end up having to go under the knife and will cost a lot!

Hi All,

Totally forgot about this thread! It turns out my difficulty losing weight which resulted in a lot of binges and even increased cravings were due to a medication I was taking long term that is not meant to be taken long term (prednisolone). I was given the bad advice to stop suddrenly and I have had all sorts of health problems as a result in the last 4 months and it isnt over yet....but I am happy to report that I am 10.7kg lighter (23.5 pounds).

In order to be healthy we must know the answers to 2 questions. What does my body require that it is not getting? What am I consuming that is toxic to my body? The good news is that our body already knows the answers. The other good news is that a process has been developed to get our body to reveal this information to us. Interested?
