The threat to the west is pretty small. Sympathisers could launch attacks here, and while serious, these would be on a relatively small scale. They're not about to topple our governments or invade our countries etc.

But the threat to the Middle East is much bigger. If the Islamic State becomes a permanent 'nation' it will further destabilise an already unstable region, with plenty of bad consequences.

I disagree. They are already invading our countries, and are influencing government/laws, education, culture, religion.

They were a huge threat to Europe 700 - 1200 years ago and the threat has returned. Learn what the true cause of the dark ages was....

IS weren't around 700 - 1200 years ago.

As for the threat to the country? Well, there's always going to be a threat while there is this type of extremism. It only takes some impressionable person lost in life to watch some videos, find a cause and act upon it.

I'd say they're no more a threat to us now than the IRA were. So, while not necessarily ideal, I don't think they pose that much of a threat.

This is nothing more than ill-informed scaremongering.

The concept of "dark ages" has been shown to be a complete misnomer which no longer holds any currency.

Most Americans are very weak on geography outside the US; most in one survey believed the UK was a former Soviet republic.

It would be a mistake to think G W Bush was uneducated having degrees from both Yale and Harvard, though any time in public he had to talk as though surrounded by red-necks to avoid arousing the envy and therefore strong dislike of his electorate.

But interestingly when it came to compassion, the rednecks in the Bible belt who bought all the nonsense originally, were actually more compassionate when they found out that Iraq had done nothing wrong and was getting bombed, taking out firstly electric power then water and sewage as well as air defenses, killing by now well over a million, interestingly the Bible thumping rednecks were found to be actually more compassionate than the average. There is hope where you least expect to find it.

I read a bit in the independent a while back - they showed a map of Iraq and Syria - from that map, it looks like Islamic State have taken over all of Iraq, except for Baghdad, and some of Syria - so me thinks - these must be local people who have taken control of their country, and have deposed the american-owned procurator pulpits, posing as a government - having destroyed the previous secular government, and the entire country as well.

So the space has been filled by local Shiite Muslims - who probably think they are taking back their country for themselves and their religion.
The media concentrates on the western muslims who have posted images on twitter of severed heads of British/American aid workers etc. .. What they neglect to make clear is that the entire region has been overrun - and the vacuum existing in Syria is also filled by the same group - Islam is a political doctrine that sees no nation boundaries or national allegiances.

And now Turkey refuses to be dragged into this debacle - with the prime minister saying that the Americans are not bringing peace to the region with bombers - but they want the oil - the Turks would have to go to war with Syria, in the proper old-fashioned manner, before the Americans decided it was on to go and bomb everybody in the middle-east whenever they feel like it - invading countries, without declaring war.

Very much looks like it's becoming another Saudi Arabia.

Not good, not good at all. It's hard to forget that most of the 911 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia.

Bin Laden deliberately recruited most of the hijackers from Saudi Arabia to try and embarrass their Royal Family for what they did in the first Gulf War with Saddam. I believe there were around 19 hijackers and all but 3 were Saudis.

Bin Laden had a furious envious rage with the Saudis for inviting the Americans onto their soil in the early 90's to liberate Kuwait and deal with Saddam. He had previously offered his services to them and they had declined.

Bin Laden I believe either had been kicked out the country or had terrorism charges placed on him and he was wanted back in Saudi Arabia and would have faced death sentence if he returned. His mindset was of someone in medieval times steeply rooted in Salafist Islam with a grudge against the House of Saud and the Americans.

I completely agree with your thoughts though on Saudi Arabia. Both the Saudis and Iran are two branches of a religion still stuck in the dark ages. ISIS is just a small step from what is happening in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Sudan, Pakistan and elsewhere every day under Sharia Law.

Bin Laden, Spin Laden.

Am I the only person on here who knows about Bin Laden? Seems so.
I think perhaps it is necessary to separate from the western paradigm for a while - literally - go to the Islamic world/Malaya/the east - for a while - get a different perspective - by being able to read books that are censored out of existence in the west, and never show up in book shops.

The Anarchist Cookbook (proper title Anarchy Cookbook) is banned in the UK.

In a few years time the banning will seem as ridiculous as banning Lady Chatterley's Lover was in the 1960's. "Would you let your wife or servant read this."

By the way if you are in the UK don't download it as the prats in the Crown Prosecution Service will do you for assisting terrorism.

Wow! `They are already invading our countries, They were a huge threat to Europe 700 - 1200 years ago.`

Xenophobia is a treatable condition, usually cured by education.

Sarcasm is also treatable, but unfortunately - once you've been infected by liberal/BBC propaganda - ignorance is only treatable in rare cases.
