The LDS faith holds that if a person is doing their best to live the most righteous life they can in regards to what they were taught and the light that they were given, then God's grace will take over from there.

Everyone will need to be taught the gospel at some point, and will also need to make the final call as to if they will accept or reject it.

But we don't see God as an arbitrary being who will reject one and accept another simply because they belonged to the "correct" denomination.

Are you saying that the LDS is not the "correct" denomination? I was under the impression that the LDS views itself as the one, true Church to the exclusion of all other denominations, including other Mormon denominations. Has this teaching changed?

Universal Pentecostal Church International, Oneness Pentecostal, World Wide Church of God, Universal Unitarian.

I assume you meant Unitarian Universalist for UU. They are a curious group, indeed, which, on one hand is so broad as to claim to accept anyone regardless of religious dogma, but so narrow as to exclude all but themselves, especially orthodox Christians.

So could this thread include all religions as to ' why it matters'?
It is an interesting topic if taken serious, instead of just jabs. And I understand them just think it could be a real learning from each other if we could rise a bit higher.
Have there been any of the above mentioned religions, UPCI, OP, WWCG, UU, on this part of the forum?

Not much. Observing holidays and other sacred days has been a bone of contention since the early years of Christianity is unlikely to go away.

I think Romans 14:5 says it best: One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.

I'm talking about the folks who go "believe as I do or be sent to Hell!".

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong - and I well may be, since I'm a fairly new EX-Mo myself, and I'm still un-learning and re-learning - but it is my understanding that except for the Roman Catholic Church, Christians do not hold that there IS only one "correct denomination."

So basically, because my post didn't match your notions it somehow means I'm lying to people?

Ever think that perhaps things just might be simpler than you think they are?

Whoa - chill, Dude. Ever think that people are not out for your blood?

To LIE - according to the dictionary.com meaning - is to make a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive. And NO, that you were doing that had not occurred to me at all. What did occur to me when you made this statement...

But we don't see God as an arbitrary being who will reject one and accept another simply because they belonged to the "correct" denomination.

...was that you do not know every single thing about the Christian world, since you were looking at the whole thing through LDS-colored lenses. And guess what? Neither do I, and neither does nearly everyone else - for various other reasons. Which is why I began my response to you with "Correct me if I'm wrong..." Someone did - with polite respect, I might add - and we all learned something as a result.

So yes, in answer to your questions, and maybe there's a valuable lesson in this. If we could take a deep breath and leave our knee-jerk emotions out of it, maybe things really are - or could be - simpler than we all think.

We're not talking about perfection; far too many critics of the church make this mistake. We're simply talking about a person doing what they can.

You've just switched from" doing your best" to "doing what you can". Don't tell me I'm being critical when I'm getting my info from you.

Seeing that the ever-popular "Why Does It Matter?" thread has come to an untimely end, I would like to restore it and thus I am creating this new thread to continue our interesting and lively discussion.

People waste time picking on this strange religion because it is a particularly easy target.

Well, that certainly includes the LDS. Both Joseph Smith and Brigham Young clearly taught they their church was the One and Only True Church and that all other denominations were false. Has this teaching changed?

Mormons are like Jews or Hindus in the sense that they say they have the only or the highest truth, but don't really condemn others to hell - usually. Hence they often have a much more relaxed attitude than Protestants who are obsessed with hell.

Nevertheless the Mormons (unlike Jews or Hindus) are big into missionizing and sending people across the world (incl. Africa and Asia) to convert other people to a religion that has no meaning or function outside of the Western world.

Hinduism is the tribal truth of India, Shinto the tribal truth of Japan, and Mormonism is a tribal truth for the Western tribe, or more particularly the white Americans in the USA.

My friend, you have been misinformed concerning the teachings of Mormonism.
