To be fair, a lot of that stuff was done after he was elected. And after four years of Carter…

I also find it interesting that during the Reagan election years, republicans were blue, and didn’t become red until the 2000 election. Why republicans would want to be associated with the international color of socialism/communism is beyond me.

So, you are blaming Reagan's failures on Carter. But when Bush is blamed for Obama's failures, you conservatives get all upset.

Never assume.

I didn’t blame any of Reagan’s failures on Carter, and I don’t see where I said Reagan failed.

And I normally don’t paint with a broad brush making unfounded statements like “you conservatives get all upset.” Could you imagine if someone said “Independents are just closet republicans that secretly cheer when democrats succeed with issues you support and are too afraid to admit it.”?

Are you serious? Kennedy would have H. Clinton running his errands.

Kennedy was a cold war warrior, and a tax cutter. He stressed personal responsibility (ask not what your country can do for you...).

And unlike his brother Ted, JFK's position on abortion was actually a Catholic one. He was one of the ilk that waged a war on women, according to the current Democratic talking points.

Reagan was a great president, and the revolutionary achievements of his terms had lasting effects that even buoyed up Clinton. His achievements dwarfed his failures.

RR was a very good president, but he was a business establishment/country-club type conservative, who would be considered very middle-of-the-road today. The only lasting thing he did for social conservatives was appoint Antonin Scalia to SCOTUS. And that was partially offset by appointing Tony Kennedy, who gave us the Lawrence v. Texas, and Windsor v. United States decisions.

As Reagan showed, when people like you, they don't nit pick your positions. JFK would've modified the platform enough to pull the moderates from both parties. The DNC would bend to his will. His youth and good looks and fashion-conscious wife would win the womens vote. Besides, who would women vote for today by comparison, LOL?

JFK learned his Cuba lesson from the Bay of Pigs.

I just spotted this thread so I have not read most of the posts.
I voted for Reagan both times. Nevertheless, I think he was greatly overrated. He made numerous promises he never tried to keep (for example, his pro-life is number one became a pro-abortion presidency). He called the Vietnam veteran's memorial a "wall of shame" then jumped on the bandwagon.
And I felt he was in the right place at the right time often getting credit for things he did not deserve. For example, he got all the credit for the downfall of Russian Communism but I felt he deserved none because it was already done for.

It kinda bugged me that he totally misunderstood and ignored the AIDS epidemic--never so much as mentioned the term--until his Hollywood buddy Rock Hudson got sick.

RR got credit in the American press, but the rest of the world knew that Mikhail Gorbachev did most of the really heavy lifting. After all, who won the Nobel Peace Prize?

...it's a given that Ronald Reagan would never make it out of the Republican primary today. He was far too liberal for today's GOP.

Believe it or not, the most liberal president we have had in the last 45-50 years was; Nixon.

Well, he probably wouldn't carry the Canadian vote, now that I think about it.

Canada had Mulroney at the same time that Reagan and Thatcher were in office.

I still have no idea what you were trying to imply with your 'people like me' snippet.

The prize is meaningless. Obama got it just for being a socialist who conned people into voting for him. He had the award before he had the linen he wanted in the White House. It used to be you had to do something great. Now you just have to say the things liberals like.
