This reminds me of the quizzes everyone used to post on Tumblr to find out what Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream flavor, or what animal, or what Disney Princess you are, haha. But I played it anyway because I'm bored and I can't sleep.

This is what I got:
"You should really be Non-Denominational! You've never understood why people get so caught up with labels, creeds, and institutions. For you, faith is what matters. You have a personal relationship with God and you're not so worried about being a member of any specific group or sect. You enjoy Bible study, casual gatherings, and a church where everyone is welcome regardless of theological labels."

That's actually........ surprisingly sort of true. I am an active member of a liberal-leaning Presbyterian church, but I mainly go for the youth ministry, fellowship, and because our minister is so knowledgeable and gives interesting and enriching sermons. I have never felt that church attendance was in any way compulsory for my faith. I'm not dedicated exclusively to Presbyterianism. We joined this church because it has wonderful ministers and ministries and it's more aligned with our beliefs. In the past when we lived in other cities we attended Methodist churches, and I went to an Episcopalian school. In college I'll probably be a part of a non-denominational campus ministry and may or may not actually join a church. We shall see.

This trespassing atheist came out as Lutheran.

Since the Old Prussian Union Church, often called the Confessing Church is one I have a fondness for I'd have to say it is as good a result as was possible. And the young Luther, the one who wrote this is someone I admire.

The Kingdom is to be in the midst of your enemies. And he who will not suffer this does not want to be of the Kingdom of Christ; he wants to be among friends, to sit among roses and lilies, not with the bad people but the devout people. O you blasphemers and betrayers of Christ! If Christ had done what you are doing, who would ever have been spared?

"Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world. Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." -Selections from Ralph Waldo Emerson

Did you ever think that the last four popes really did not have much in common?

Paul VI
John Paul II
Benedict XVI
Francis

While going through a murky time in my life I ran into an Assembly of God bunch who told me that it was prophesied that in the last day the people were going to have to cut their own paths.

But... This is what makes a true man anyway.

.

OK, I'll bite. They are all of European parentage and none of them did much to reform the church, so that suggests a different conclusion. What did you have in mind?

You should all be every denomination and non denomination.

Whoever looks for a denomination to be good has rejected God, for God is all good, and not divided against Himself.

For me, that would entail accepting and tolerating heterodox and heretical theologies. Not going to happen.

Not sure what the problem is with "heterodox" theologies--Paul allowed for them, and the Church Fathers in the 2nd century allowed for them.

Paul called them heresy and fought against them, so I'm not sure if you've been reading up on the problems that faced the early church or not.

MarkRohfrietsch made a distinction between heterodoxy and heresy. Are you saying now that the two words are synonyms?

In the orthodox christian view, they are essentially the same. but that's in my own opinion. And I prefer the term heterodoxy then heresy, as that second word usually becomes a reason to propitiate some sort of attack against the idea and the person that has that idea.

In the orthodox christian view,

You mean Eastern Orthodox? Because by definition, the Eastern Orthodox considers everyone else heterodoxical.

Christian Forums has their own definition for "orthodox" that they use to moderate this forum.

My definition: "Orthodox" is everyone who assents to the assertions contained in the Apostle's Creed (which includes those Baptists who reject the concept of "creeds").

But in general, every denomination is a case of one group deciding that everyone else is heterodoxical...and without necessarily declaring that they are all heretical.

No I mean orthodox as in upholding the Creeds (Nicene,Apostle's ,Athanisian)
