• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

    If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

    If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. I'm scared of thunderstorms

Well, I used to be okay with them, until I heard one really loud. So now I'm terrified of these things. Whenever I hear that rumbling noise... Sigh. I just immediately start feeling scared. And it may or may not be getting worse. Now recently, I thought I would just grow out of it, (I'm 15) but I just had dream in which I heard it relatively loudly and I woke up with my heart beating hard (not fast). :( help?

When I was your age I still wet my bed, was scared of the dark and basically anything that was normal and adventurous to normal teens. Some people develop some parts of life less quickly then others do. That I still had nightmares of scary movies didn't mean I had PTSD or an Anxiety disorder.
Right now all ya have to do is realize that no matter what happens at that moment of Thunder God is with you. If you have seen how to train a dragon, toothless covers his owner each time he needs protection that way God covers you!

Hi there!!

I too fear thunderstorms (and loud noises in general) so I totally understand.

To be honest what I do many times if I can (if I am at home during one) is I put on ear muffs (the ones that hunters wear to protect their ears) and it works great. Blocks out the loud booms and bangs! I actually keep them in a drawer in my night stand so I can grab them in the night if there is a loud storm.

I have something similar to that, but I also want to stop being afraid of them without the ear protection. :( help me please!

Well, that would be the million dollar answer! I wish I had an answer that would make you not afraid, but I haven't yet figured out how to myself. :hug:
If either of us figures it out we have to be sure to let the other know, it would save years of miserable fear. I sometimes wish there was a switch in my brain that I could flip, and then suddenly magically be just like everyone else who isn't afraid. That would be so nice.
