In Australia and America, the word "f.ag" is used as a derogatory term towards a gay person (usually a male). In the UK and Ireland, however, it is slang word for "cigarette".
f.ag has also commonly been used to refer to cigarettes here in Australia as well. Heard it all the time in NSW, Qld and SA.

Being a child of the 70s and 80s, I remember those sweet cigarettes you could buy at the supermarket and the lolly shops. They were originally called "F.ags" and then changed their name to "Fads" because some political correctoid went and complained about them.

What's your thoughts on banning smoking here altogether?

No.

Why does it need to banned, when people can choose in their own lives whether or not to smoke?

Do you want a government that discourages personal responsibility? What kind of people will that breed? Nanny statism makes babies out of citizens, and I don't see any positive long term benefits in that.

smoking is a choice if people want to smoke let them.
i agree if you ban it, it will just be black market and cheaper and probably more dangerous.

i do beleive smoking is bad, but i also beleive we were put on this earth to make our own choices. and who am i to judge what another does? we should leave that up to the lord.

i mean if we all went back 70 years ago everyone smoked!

let people do what they want

If people want to smoke and ruin their bodies, let them. But I'd really rather that they didn't do it in public places or around small children. It's all very well to kill themselves, but there's no need to do it to their children, too.

As an asthmatic, I really really don't like it when people smoke in public because it makes it very difficult for me to breathe.

I support the idea of every smoker quitting, but recon it would be futile to simply put a legal ban on it. It would simply become another illegal drug that was used by many and take a lot of resources to police. Possibly one solution would be to remove benefits for those who end up suffering from self induced smoking (or alcohol) related deseses

only problem then is would we remove benefits from someone who didn't eat healthy or someone who lived in an area that was not as healthy as other areas enviromentally. It is a dangerous path to go down.

I'm from New Zealand and I am a non smoker due to the fact or what it does to the body and what it can do to those around you through second and even third hand smoke. I think it should be banned, just like how some areas are alcohol free zones, they should definitely consider getting smoking out from public places such as bus stops and outside park and green areas, beaches etc just so that pothers in public who don't smoke can enjoy public spaces without smokers being around.

True dag, no easy or fair solution comes to mind.

Won't work. Banning smoking tobacco means criminalizing it which means jail time, fines etc. Too many smokers will resist the ban, for starters, and it's not as if Australia can handle lots more inmates when judges are handing out slaps on the wrist jail time for serious offenses involving violence.

Currently, the amount of tax $$ being reaped by the government gives them no incentive to do it either.

I say ban the tobacco companies from selling it. Let people grow their own and farmers grow it to be sold in raw form by small vendors under strict regulations.
If they did that it would be struck down so quick by the courts you'd miss it if you blinked!
