Hey Everyone !

A new Work Colleague has been asking me plenty of questions about the Faith recently. It is fantastic as I don’t get to talk about Catholicism much at Work. I’ve been answering them to the best of my ability. He knows next to nothing about Christianity and, as such, I was looking for Videos for him to watch.

I was told that Fr. Robert Barron’s You Tube Channel is a good place to start, but I have heard conflicting opinions about him. Some comments I’ve seen say that some of his teaching isn’t completely in line with the Magisterium. Is there any truth to these accusations ? I wouldn’t want my Colleague to learn things contrary to the Faith.

Many thanks in advance.

On Youtube, Fr. Larry Richards. He often speaks to large groups of Christians from all backgrounds. I find him to be very 'real world' in his approach to teaching the faith.

Also, when the time comes, free republic.com is a nice web page that details all of the Scripture that is said throughout the mass.

Peace in Christ

His series "Catholicism" has been aired for quite some time on EWTN. They are dead serious about keeping their website free of heretical teachers. At the earliest hint of problems with both Fathers Corapi and Groeschel, the network immediately suspended all further shows by them, as well as pulled their writings from the Catalog.

That tells me more than we need to know!

Hi Chi Rho! I like your name.

Robert Barron is very good. I met him personally and had dinner with him twice, I've seen him speak and I've seen his YouTube videos and other resources. He is a fine Priest and a good teacher of the faith all around.

The one problem I heard people mention was his endorsement of Hans Urs von Balthasar's theological idea that we may reasonably hope that there is no one in hell. I totally disagree with him on that because I believe it is at variance with the clear words of Christ, but this idea alone is not enough to make one a heretic, although I think it's theologically and practically presumptuous.

Another thing that makes him suspect in certain circles is that he does show admiration for certain figures which are viewed with suspicion by more traditionalist Catholics: for instance, he speaks very favorably of Dorothy Day, or Henri de Lubac, or Yves Congar. The latter two thinkers are resourcement thinkers around the time of the Second Vatican Council, and were known for their theology which was more focused on the Scriptures and the Fathers than St. Thomas Aquinas and the Neo-Thomistic school of theology. They also were tinged with some modernism, it is true, but I don't think they were truly heretics.

That being said, Barron weaves St. Thomas and other great Catholic teachers into his words and writings, and in a way that is very conversational and accessible to contemporary people.

If you have any other questions about my experience of him, please feel free to get in touch with me.

And if your friend likes to read, get him a little Catechism! The small versions are very portable.

St_Barnabus, quick question:

I don't understand what you just said. Are you saying Corapi and Groschel denounced him, or that Barron denounced Corapi and Groschel?

I think she means EWTN pulled their stuff when they got in trouble.

Tallguy got it right. EWTN pulled both Fathers Corapi and Groeschel when they got in trouble, as well as their books and tapes.

Hey, Irenaeus !

Thank you for the Compliment. I have a Labarum tattooed on my Shoulder Blade by the way. :p

I'm not sure there is much more I can ask you. The Information you've given me seems fine. I just wanted to make sure that Fr. Barron wasn't a raging Heretic. :D

I'll give my Colleague a Link to his Channel. Having met him yourself, would you do the same if you were in my Position ?
