From what i've seen, people that say that are usually the Christians that shout at their congregations during a service and are on the street quoting bible verses through a loud speaker.

I was walking through town the other week and there was some sort of preacher and he was shouting:

"Your mommy and daddy can't save you, your friends can't save you, you can't get a piggy back ride into heaven. Your Priest can't save you because he's sleeping with your wife and kids":doh:

Just ignorance really.

I rarely encounter this opinion in person. Usually, I get it from people who don't know me well enough to see my faith in action, such as people I meet over the internet.

I get it often in person, living in a Protestant bible belt is likely the main culprit. ^_^ Though I have also found many kind people as of late.

It really seems that the difference lies in what's first. If they hear that I'm Catholic before seeing my faith in action, I'm Hell-bound. If they already respect me, have prayed with me, have shared my writing, etc. they just look uncomfortable when they find out.

They say this because we are deemed by them as "idolaters" by their perceived thought of us worshipping, adoring, and venerating the Theotokos, Angels, ans Saints where it is actually contrary. They accuse us of having Popes as they think that we are with the anti Christ. The Pope is actually the Vicar of Christ in Earth which is totally good.

I am blessed to teach ancient Christianity in my class because I teach sixth grade and it is California curriculum. Yes, I know, shocking...

It's awesome to teach with a textbook that has Christ, the apostles, mention of martyrs, saints, the Beatitudes, the Passion, etc. I do think the book is too stinkin' Western as it mentions the Pope with no mention of the Ecumenical Patriarch or Orthodox perspectives and Eastern saints, etc. I wish it had a little more depth.

Anyway, the first question I get from a whole bunch of kids is, "Are Catholics Christian?" ^_^:p

Up until I was 16, and before I was a Christian, I was always under the impression Catholic and Christian were different. I would frequently ask and hear asked: Are you Catholic or Christian?

Weird. I don't even know... ^_^

some are Calvinists who believe that Catholics preach "works based salvation" and thus reject the Christian Gospel

this is not true, we recognize that our own works will bring us nothing.
it is only through the grace of God that we are able to repent
Catholics and Calvinists do not agree on mankind's ability to resist His Grace, they see this disagreement as a total rejection of the Gospel on our part

Calvinism is a modern doctrine, it can not be traced back to being older then 500 years, there is no reason to think the teachings of Calvinism are the same as the doctrines Early Church

I have heard this as well; but, I've always heard it in the context of dominations, and not Christianity itself. What I mean is when people compare Christian dominations by saying things like, "Catholics practice lent by not eating meat; Lutherans do not have to practice lent, or, if they do, they may withhold other objects besides meat," and so on. (I don't know if that statement is true or not, as I haven't been to a strictly Lutheran church since I was a kid.)

Protestants believe Catholicism is a form of paganism

Really? I've, actually, never heard of this before. I have heard of people practicing ChristoPaganism before - that is, the cross between modern Pagan beliefs and modern Christian beliefs - but, I've never heard of people equating a sect of Christianity to Paganism. Is there a specific reason or context behind this?

I don't understand why myself.

I was raised to believe that Catholicism is not Christian. I never accepted that, perhaps because even while I was being taught that Catholics weren't Christian, I knew that my father was raised Catholic. I knew my grandparents were Catholic. I wasn't allowed to learn anything about Catholic theology until I left home, but I certainly knew enough Catholics and had spoken with my father enough to know that Catholic theology was centered on Christ and Him crucified. I do not grasp how much more Christian you can get than that.

Later, when I started to learn in a bit more detail about specific Catholic beliefs, I never ran across a doctrine that made me go, "Woah! That just can't work for a Christian!" Most criticisms I've heard come from totally misunderstanding a doctrine.

Here's the most common example from my life. I am constantly hearing family criticize Catholics for "praying" to the saints. This is a complete misunderstanding of what is happening. As far as I know, Catholics pray only to God. Asking for prayers from the saints is no more nefarious than asking my great aunt JoBob or whatever to pray with me and believe with me for something, yes? I'll let the Catholics here elaborate on that in case I've gotten it wrong, but the point is...

There are certain things that just create a mental block in a person. Once that block has been set up, you can't get around it. All you can do is show them Christian love and pray that God will bring them around. Either He will or He won't.
