Tonight while I was relaxing playing a game of golf, I started wondering if the bible said anything good about us as people. All the years I read the bible sinner has been burnt into my memory and now it's left a nasty stain on my mind.

What do you think, does the bible say anything good about us?

The Word says we are made in the image of God, and that despite our fatal sin flaw God loved us enough to send His Son to die to reconcile us back to Him. "Gospel" literally means "good message".

Yes, it can but we are in peril because of the tension we face in trying to do right vs. wrong in a fallen world in which we die in uncertainty based on our conduct ( read Ezekiel 18 & 33:1-20). Other examples of righteous conduct are given in Proverbs 14 & 15 & a possible fulfillment of these is given in Psalm 15. The Lord Jesus Christ testifies to this in John 5:22-30 & St. Paul indicates this also in Romans 2. (Please read scriptures I cite).

One thing to remember though is that while God may determine which of us might be good, we are in darkness & in peril. Collectively our sins are laid out in Romans 1 & the natural law is laid out in Romans 2 pertaining to individual conduct of right & wrong. Our collective condemnation is explained in Romans 3 but so is the promise of salvation by grace in Jesus Christ. St. Paul explains the way of salvation from Romans chapters 4-10 & the call to confess the Lord Jesus Christ is found in Romans 10:9-13. Romans 11 indicates that this is a commitment & Romans 12 & 13 outlines our commitments while 14-16 lay out the working of grace.

Everything God says for mankind is based on His love for His creation. He speaks judgment and condemnation to natural men who fight against God and His immutable Word (which is most people). His blessings and eternal promises are for those who confess their sinful nature, receive His "great salvation" in His beloved Son --the Lord Jesus, the Christ of God, and honor Him. Without Christ in our heart we will have no part in God-the Father, and will surely face eternal condemnation. See John 1; John 3; John 14 for salvation and blessings!

It says we are capable of being victorious:

Revelation 2:7,11 NIV

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.

That is a pretty good thing for Jesus to say.

(Oh wow a Raze quote, where is that dude?)

This is a good time to use the "washing with the Word" analogy -- to wash all that accusation off your back.

Acknowledgement of goodness in humans:

Proverbs 13:14
The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life

Psalm 1:1-3
How blessed is the man...[whose] delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.

Gen 2:7-9
Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being . The Lord God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed.

Out of the ground the Lord God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

(He made it that way for man to enjoy -- like we buy hamster toys and decorate dollhouses, wanting to create a nice environment for others to live in.)

Proverbs 3:35
The wise will inherit honor

Proverbs 1:5
A wise man will hear and increase in learning, And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel

Deuteronomy 1:13
Choose wise and discerning and experienced men from your tribes, and I will appoint them as your heads.'

Broader Encouragement

John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

John 15:4
Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

2 Thessalonians 3:3
But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.

1 Peter 5:7
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 John 4:4
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

1 John 5:14-15
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

Hebrews 10:19-23
brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body,
and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

Psalm 34:22
The LORD will rescue his servants; no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.

Isaiah 58:11
The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Psalm 32:8
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

Luke 10:19
I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

Deuteronomy 31:8
The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

1 John 4:4
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Tonight while I was relaxing playing a game of golf, I started wondering if the bible said anything good about us as people. All the years I read the bible sinner has been burnt into my memory and now it's left a nasty stain on my mind.

What do you think, does the bible say anything good about us?

OH BOY OH BOY does it....The bible says all kinds of wonderful things about us. Afterall, God created us in His image, so why should he not have things that he loves about us... Check this out, It's a sermon I preached a while back. I think it will pretty much tell you what the Bible says about YOUR identity!

"Who I am"

This is the final session in a series about our identity crisis, where we are discovering who we are.

The first question of "What is your current identity?"
The second question was "Where does your identity come from?"
You were asked to think about those two questions and make a list of the attributes that you believe make up your identity. I hope that you did that.

As we begin tonight, we are going to spend a lot of time reading scripture, and if you want to take notes, I would encourage you to do so.

Everyone say your name. Now say "is"

Planned - Psalm 139:13-16
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."

I sincerely hope that nobody has ever told you "you were an accident". You are NOT an accident. God knew you before you were even born, and as this verse tells us that your entire life was officially ordered by God before you even came to be. You were deliberately planned by the God of all creation. You were meant to be here. You were put here specifically to fulfill a part of God's big amazing story. You were put here for His glory.

Deeply Loved - Romans 5:8
"But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners"

God knows we are sinners, he knows every horrible thing you've ever done. He knows all your secrets. He knows everything about you. And even after knowing you fully, he gives you his unconditional …UNCONDITIONAL love for you. He loves you so much that he gave his Son to DIE for you. His love is not based on your performance. He doesn't love you more if you try to be good. He doesn't love you less if you do bad things. He just loves you.

God loves you as much as he loves Jesus.

WHAT? No way. Now you've gone to far.

Listen to this: John 17:23 This was Jesus himself praying to the Father. He said "I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me." WOW…Now there's a mind-blowing truth. God loves you as much as he loves Jesus, and whats even more mind-blowing is that he loves you like this even when we are dirty rotten stinking heathens.

Paul wrote : "For I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death can't, and life can't. The angels won't, and all the powers of hell itself cannot keep Gods' love away. Our fears for today, or worries about tomorrow or where we are -- high above the sky, or in the deepest ocean -- nothing will ever be able to separate us from the love of God demonstrated by our Lord Jesus Christ when He died for us." - Romans 8:38-39
Whatever difficulties and struggles you are going through today, or will go through tomorrow, will NOT separate you from God's Love. There are however things that will keep you from experiencing His love.

Righteous - 2 Corinthians 5:17
"This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun"

One of the requirements to enter heaven is complete righteousness. Something we cannot do on our own, because we are living in a broken world, and are a broken people. The good news is, once you receive Christ through faith, he imparts his righteousness onto you. He clothes you in His righteousness. We will talk more about this later.

Adopted - Ephesians 1:5
"God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ"
Some of you may be adopted. For those of you that are not, one thing you need to understand about adoption is that the child is taken into the family and treated as if he/she was part of the family….not only treated, but VIEWED as one of the family….not only viewed, but IS one of the family.

When Paul wrote this verse, he was writing as a way for people of the day to understand. Under roman law of the time, an adopted son or daughter was entitled to the exact same legal rights as a naturally born son or daughter. The adopted son or daughter was entitled to the family name, the inheritance, and the citizenship to the country of the family. The father of the adopted child was also expected to do everything a natural father would do. Provide guidance, care, and discipline to the child. This kind of adopted relationship was used to show what our relationship with God is like through Jesus Christ.

Being adopted, we have been given the family name and every principality knows what family we belong to, we've been given the family inheritance, our citizenship is guaranteed, and our Dad gives us guidance, care and discipline. And here's something really awesome…. In his kingdom, there is no such thing as a "only child". You are not alone, everyone else that has been adopted is your brother or sister.

Chosen - Ephesians 1:4
"Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes"

From before the beginning of the world, God had a plan to save everyone lost in sin. Everything you read in the Bible about Christ saving us, is part of that plan. Being part of this plan, you were chosen by Him to belong to Him. You were made for Him.

Sealed - Ephesians 1:13
"And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you, and when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own.

Throughout history, if a official document was sent it was sealed. It could be a mark, a signature, or they would drip wax and stamp it, sealing the document. When it arrived at its destination, the legitimacy of the document was verified by the seal. In many cases a specific seal from a king or ruler added prominence(importance) to what contained in the letter.

Make no mistake about it, when you placed your faith in Jesus Christ, and surrendered your life to Him, The Holy Spirit entered you and marked you with a seal on you that cannot be erased. It cannot be hidden. It cannot be disguised, and it seals his promise to you.

Protected - Phillipians 4:7
"Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus"

I recently listened to Louie Giglio's series Prayer:Remix. He took a rather humorous look at how we pray. He said how many times do we pray "Father, we ask you to watch over us and protect us". It's funny, because we do it. Many many of us have either pray for protection, or heard someone do it. How goofy we are to ask for something we already have. What did we do lose it?

There are enemies around us, that want to devour us. and without Christ, they would succeed. We don't need to fear evil, because we have the great protector with us all the time.
But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one. - 2 Thessalonians 3:3
What we are really asking for is "Please God don't let me get sick, get hurt, die in an accident, etc." He suggested that our prayer should look more like Jesus's prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Father, if its possible, I don't want to get sick, or get hurt, or die today, but let your will be done, not mine.

Blessed - Ephesians 1:3
"All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we united with Christ"

Well, Amen to that. When we united in Christ, we received every blessing, every divine favor he could pour out on us. He has endowed us with every cherished thing that we will ever need. Thank you Jesus.

Pardoned - Romans 8:1
"So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus"

Imagine if you will a courtroom. Your days on earth have ended, and you are now standing in the Holy Courtroom. You've been accused of all your sins. The judge enters the courtroom. It is God the Father. You're lawyer is standing next to you, and if you check his credentials, he is Jesus Christ, the son of the Judge. Jesus stands in front of you while the charges are being read. He covers you. And every time the Judge looks at you, all he sees is Jesus. And every time a charge is read, Jesus raises his hands and shows the nail holes. God the father bangs his gavel down hard on the bench, and he says "I declare you righteous, blameless, not because of who you are or what you've done, but because of My Son, and who He is, and what He's' done. You are pardoned"

You are planned, deeply loved, righteous, adopted, chosen, sealed, protected, blessed and pardoned.
Do you know your current identity? This is your identity through Christ.

What do you think, does the bible say anything good about us?

Apart from the fact that we are made in God's image, and that He intended for every one of us who exists to exist, we have no other intrinsic value. God loves us, not because we are loveable, but because He is a loving God. Scripture paints a pretty dark picture of the person who is living with their back to God, unrepentant in their sin.

Col 1:21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now has he reconciled

Eph 2:1 And you has he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience:
Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our manner of living in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Rom 1:19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God has shown it unto them.
Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Rom 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Rom 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Rom 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Rom 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Rom 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

The hard truth of our desperate wickedness is a an essential one to yield to in coming to salvation. I don't believe anyone can be saved who does not acknowledge that what the above verses say about the unregenerate person are true. But when a man humbles himself before God's declaration of his depravity and agrees with God that it's true, then it is that he may pass into the joyous release of his sin and into the incredible delight of fellowship with God. THere is peace with God and "joy unspeakable" that awaits the person on the far side of their acknowledgement of their own sinfulness. But most are too proud and too fond of their sin to ever admit they are as God says they are.

Joh 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Joh 3:20 For every one that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

It is because this is so that salvation must be a work of God. We are too steeped in sin, to corrupted by our own selfishness and pride, to ever, of our own accord, accept the truth about ourselves and the rule of God over us.

Selah.

You are planned, deeply loved, righteous, adopted, chosen, sealed, protected, blessed and pardoned.
Do you know your current identity? This is your identity through Christ.
All those passages and verses seem to point out our need for a savour and that the god of the bible cares for us, but I am wondering if god says anything positive about our inner most being. (Not just our weaknesses but also our strengths.)

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.

That is a pretty good thing for Jesus to say.
They dont sound like a directed positive thing thats said, when you say something nice about people you might say "People know how to pull together in a crisis" I am looking for comments like that from the god of the bible.

Do you mean like this:

He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, [...]

Edit: Chris, I was being cheeky and this is taken from it's proper context. I guess the attitude I am expressing is that while there are things to like about humans in general (and being general is wrong anyway), He is always showing us how to improve. The advice in the bible is intended to focus on the potential for improvement. What value is there in saying "you are good at that, aren't you?". Isn't there more value in saying "see, this is good, and that is better".

Tonight while I was relaxing playing a game of golf, I started wondering if the bible said anything good about us as people. All the years I read the bible sinner has been burnt into my memory and now it's left a nasty stain on my mind.

What do you think, does the bible say anything good about us?

It sounds like you have received a distorted impression of what the Bible teaches.

God made man in His own image. While the rest of creation was "good" in His sight, when He was done making man He pronounced this handiwork "very good".

But sin entered and man fell. Though He could have, God did not pull His Spirit from the earth and leave us to our own devices. The first prophecy in the Bible occurs at the fall of man, when God tells the serpent that while he may bruise man in the heel, a Seed is coming who will bruise the serpent in the head. That Seed is the Son of Man, Jesus.

The picture is not of man's seed becoming a hideous demon from hell, it is of a beautiful rose trampled into the ground.

If it were not, if God did not see past man's fatal flaws and still value him and hold His good intentions for him, would the Father have given His Only-Begotten to ransom us?

Though fallen, man is still in God's image and has plenty of value. But he has a fatal disease that keeps him from relationship with God, the only source of Life. That's why Christ's atonement is necessary - not because we are worthless, but because despite being ruined we have great value that in Christ is redeemable.

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him -1John 3:1

For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh -Phil 3:3

and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith -Phil 3:9

No I don't want to, it upsets me too much.
Is it possible to explain it sufficiently for me to grasp your reasoning, without becoming too upset while doing it? You must have a serious grudge to be saying this, I do hope you have assessed it so you can plan to overcome it.

No its just upsetting to find some way to respond to you when what you said in that post shows that opressive and cookie cutter christian mindset.
