The locust plague of Revelation 9

1 Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit.
2 And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit.
3 Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
4 They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.
5 And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man.
6 In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.
7 The shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were crowns of something like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men.
8 They had hair like women's hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth.
9 And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses running into battle.
10 They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men five months.
11 And they had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon.
(Rev 9:1-11 NKJ)

As these locusts torment for five months(9:5-6) they do not symbolize weaponry or armies of any sort because the latter strive to kill instantly. Not harming vegetation rules out literal locusts or similar insect kind. The composite scorpion tail, locust body and human face would imply "infernal cherubim" but cherubim are composite human/animals, never insects. Confirming, Satan is Beelzebub (lord of flies, Mat 12:24) connecting unclean spirits and insects. Rather than surgical means, victims of the stings crave death for relief, weighing against the stingers being physical.

Scripture says those who do not love the truth find pleasure in lies (2 Thess 2:11-12), hence the locusts cannot represent deceiving spirits teaching lies. Nor would the locusts be Jews, Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox, or Muslims as it is a historical fact these groups have been tormenting everyone and each other throughout history, not just in the end time for five months.

It follows their description identifies who they are and what they do.

Scorpions: Are an instrument of punishment (1 Ki 12:11, 14) used by the enemy of God (Luke 10:19) or evil spirits themselves (Luke 11:12-13).

Locusts: Ceremonially clean (Lev 11:20-23; Mark 1:6), this is God's army pressed into service like a plague (Exod 10:4-6) against apostates (Amos 4:9-10). Just as Christ commanded Legion into the Abyss via the Lake prefiguring Judgment Day (Luke 8:31-33) so these are commanded to torment followers of the Beast.

Like horses prepared for battle: Swift. Their appearance is like the appearance of horses; And like swift steeds, so they run. (Joel 2:4 NKJ)

Abyss: Another name for "Tartarus" into which the "fallen ones" (Nephilim) were commanded in Noah's day (2 Pet 2:4; Jude 1:5-7; Gen 6:1-4; Luke 8:31; Rev 9:11; 11:7; 17:8; 20:1, 3).*4 . Here its "bottomless pit" (φρέαρ ἄβυσσος) because the smoke from it seemed endless, as did the locusts coming forth.

Faces like men, hair like women's: The hair style of Women on a man is perverse (Deut 22:5) and dishonors the image of God in man (1 Cor 11:7-10). Therefore, this is an allusion to the Nephilim disgracing the image of God for sexual perversion.

Crowns of something like gold: Kings wear crowns, but these are "like gold" symbolizing inferior authority, referring to their authority in Satan's kingdom, albeit before entering the Abyss.

Teeth were like lions' teeth: Voracious locusts can gnaw through doors, hence lion teeth---these cut through every defense, like fangs pierce to the quick. Compare: For a nation has come up against My land, Strong, and without number; His teeth are the teeth of a lion, And he has the fangs of a fierce lion. (Joe 1:6 NKJ).

7 The shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle.. 9 And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses running into battle. There is no reference to modern weaponry as noted in the opening, therefore its metaphor illustrating the terror of the LORD:

4 Their appearance is like the appearance of horses; And like swift steeds, so they run.
5 With a noise like chariots Over mountaintops they leap, Like the noise of a flaming fire that devours the stubble, Like a strong people set in battle array.
6 Before them the people writhe in pain; All faces are drained of color.
7 They run like mighty men, They climb the wall like men of war; Every one marches in formation, And they do not break ranks.
8 They do not push one another; Every one marches in his own column. Though they lunge between the weapons, They are not cut down.
9 They run to and fro in the city, They run on the wall; They climb into the houses, They enter at the windows like a thief.
10 The earth quakes before them, The heavens tremble; The sun and moon grow dark, And the stars diminish their brightness.
11 The LORD gives voice before His army, For His camp is very great; For strong is the One who executes His word. For the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; Who can endure it? (Joe 2:4-11 NKJ)

10 They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men five months: restates what was already said:

5 And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. (Rev 9:5 NKJ)

It is said the torment of a scorpion sting is unendurable even for a short period of time, no wonder any so tormented for five months seek death for relief.

Pagan belief has Satan ruling in hell, but scripture has God Sovereign in hell (Ps 139:8) and demons are terrified by it (Luke 8:31). Even when Jesus said the "Gates of Hades shall not prevail against it" there was no reference to satanic forces at all. The dead are powerless at the Gates of Hell (πύλη ᾅδης Isa 38:10), but that was not true in His case (Mat 16:18; cf. vs. 21 cp. John 2:19)---Even the Gates of Hades before which all men are powerless, would not stop His resurrection and promise to build His church.

1 And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit.
2 And he opened the bottomless pit,

1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;
3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while. (Rev 20:1-3 NKJ)

Rev 9:2 "he" proves this "star" does not symbolize a nuclear blast opening a hole in the earth, or falling meteor. Its an angel who is given the key, the same angel who "laid hold of the dragon...and bound him for a thousand years and cast him into the bottomless pit" (Rev 20:1-3). Therefore, "he" is NOT Satan.

While most interpret πεπτωκότα literally as “had fallen” and claim Satan is this fallen angel, context indicates its best to consider this "a dramatic perfect" (Dana and Mantey, A Manual Grammar of the Greek New Testament, 204–5) meaning the star "had just fallen."

And they had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon. (Rev 9:11 NKJ)

Unlike real locusts who "have no king" (Prov 30:27), these are obeying a controlling authority personified as Abaddon in Hebrew, Apollyon in Greek. Both words mean "destruction." Therefore, the tormenting stings are punishment, not meant to cause repentance. Their victims have already accepted the mark of the Beast (Rev 14:9-11) and this is just a foretaste of their coming torment. It is unlikely a literal angel-king of the Abyss exists, he doesn't appear anywhere else in scripture and learning his existence now, would be pointless. The context isn't about him, its about the locusts. Therefore this "king" represents the "controlling authority" explaining the actions of the locusts.

END NOTES
*1 Nephilim are not giants (Septuagint). They are "fallen ones (angels)" and not the "men of renown" because Gen 6:4 "and also after this" makes them contemporaries with the sons of God before they began marrying the daughters of men and bearing children. They appear first because they instigated the sin, conspiring with men and their beautiful daughters to seduce these sons of God. Because man has dominion over the earth (Gen 1:26), and joined Satan's conspiracy to defeat God's outreach to man (cp Lactantius, Book II, chapt 15.), God blames man for the offense (Gen 6:5-6) and was "highly offended" (NET).

"Nephilim" appears once more in Numbers 13:33 in an exaggeration for rhetorical effect by faithless spies who changed their initial report because Caleb was winning the argument. Confirming this, Arba (the greatest man) of the Anakim (Josh 14:15) was the father of Anak, and evidently Caleb dispatched three of his children (Josh 15:11) without much fanfare.

When we compare 2 Pet 2:4 with Jude 1:5-7 and Gen 6:1-4 it becomes evident the "angels who sinned" and were cast into Tartarus (= Abyss) are not the same as the "sons of God" in Jude 1:5-7 even though both are said to be "kept in chains of darkness". Unlike demons, the sinning "sons of God" parallel "those who did not believe (i.e., obey)" in Exodus and so were destroyed "from under the sun".

For if God didn't spare the angels who sinned but threw them down into Tartarus and delivered them to be kept in chains of darkness until judgment; (2Pe 2:4 CSB)

5 Now I want to remind you, though you know all these things: The Lord first saved a people out of Egypt and later destroyed those who did not believe;
6 and He has kept, with eternal chains in darkness for the judgment of the great day, the angels who did not keep their own position but deserted their proper dwelling.
7 In the same way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them committed sexual immorality and practiced perversions, just as angels did, and serve as an example by undergoing the punishment of eternal fire. (Jud 1:5-7 CSB)

Their being used by God to torment the followers of the beast didn't require the "eternal chains in darkness" be removed, they were compelled against their will to serve God and remained chained in darkness throughout.

Similarly, in a prefigure of Judgment Day, Christ permitted a legion of demons fool themselves that Christ would allow their moving from a man to a herd of unclean swine flesh, without punishment. To their complete astonishment and horror, the unclean flesh became their prison communicating the wrath of a Holy offended God. Christ compelled them to run uncontrollably into the Lake and to the Abyss they so feared, the entire event prefiguring what will occur on Judgment Day:

30 Jesus asked him, saying, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion," because many demons had entered him.
31 And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss.
32 Now a herd of many swine was feeding there on the mountain. So they begged Him that He would permit them to enter them. And He permitted them.
33 Then the demons went out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently (ὥρμησεν) down the steep place into the lake and drowned. (Luk 8:30-33 NKJ)

The verb hōrmēsen, “rushed,” preserved from Mark 5:13, “denotes violent movement uncontrolled by human reason”- Fitzmyer, J. A. (2008). The Gospel according to Luke I–IX: introduction, translation, and notes (Vol. 28, p. 739). New Haven; London: Yale University Press.

Read joel 1 & 2.

There a actual physical locust plague is characterized as an invading army.

In rev 9, the invasion of the romans are characterized as a locust plague.

You have to get into the frame of mind that a first century jew or reader of only the OT would have.

Examine the armies described in the prophets...they are likened to locusts:

Isaiah 33:4, Jeremiah 46:23, and Jeremiah 51:14.

Revelation 9:1 "And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit [pit of the abyss]."

The "star" that falls to the earth is the star of Isaiah 14. The star is "Lucifer", who will be the Antichrist once he arrives on earth. Satan is given the key, or authority to the bottomless pit, for this is where Satan's fallen angels are held.
Satan is to be God's executioner of God's divine wrath that is to be poured out upon the earth. God is going to give Satan the right to have his way with all who are blind to God's Word.

Remember, God removed the wall of protection around Job; for Satan. The only stipulation God gave Satan was that he was not allowed to take Job's life. Job had the will; Satan did the testing, and God allowed it. This is an example of what is to happen in these end times; and that is why we must be ready, and with our spiritual armor on.
Right now, today, Satan is not in that bottomless pit, but in heaven. He is the accuser of the saints before the throne of God. The fallen angels are in the pit, or the abyss. The pit is not a place, or location, but a point of degradation. It's a similar statement to Satan being told he would always crawl on his belly, as the serpent. No Satan never became a snake, but he was a deceiver and his actions were as that of a snake.

Revelation 9:2 "And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit."

This is the pit that holds every evil spirit that is on the earth and in God's confinement. This smoke comes from the pit, and it darkens, not eliminates the sun and air. When Jesus Christ returns the sun, moon and stars are eliminated. This darkening is talked about in Revelation 8:12, where one third of visibility is gone, at the sounding of the fourth trumpet.

This smoke is setting up the people of the earth for the supernatural things about to happen. Just like in Job's case, God will set limits how far Satan can go. What is important to us, as Christians; is that we be able to identify Satan, and his works, by what ever roll he plays, or name he choses for himself.

Revelation 9:3 "And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power."

This locust army that comes upon the earth is Satan's army of demonic forces. They are the fallen angels, and demons, both coming with Satan, and those that are already here upon the earth.

The "power" in the Greek, is "exousia"; it means "authority", or delegated power by God to them. It is the right to carry out the wrath of God, in His [God's] behalf. When they strike, or exert their power on the deceived, it is a spiritual power, as we see in Ephesians 6:10-20. This is because we are in a spiritual battle against Satan and His forces.
If you are looking for bombs to fall, fire from heaven, or as such, you will be misled. In a spiritual sense, their striking will be deadly; spiritual deadly, for they will exert their authority in the same manner as a scorpion renders it's prey harmless and defenseless.

Revelation 9:4 "And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads."

God will not allow any physical damage to any part of the earth. Not the grass, trees, or any physical matter you can think of. This is a spiritual warfare, and it is a battle for the minds of men and the commitment of their souls to him. God is very specific as to what they can do. Their targets are only the people; The "Anthropos" in the Greek, the individuals of man, not any animal, and only those "that have not the seal of God in their foreheads".

Revelation 9:5 "And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man."

God has given us a good clue as to how long Satan will rule as Antichrist. That time is five months. The book of Joel describes in detail how this method of the locust works. The result of that torment is exactly as the torment of the scorpion that "striketh a man". So lets try to understand more of both the locust, and the scorpion.
This is that locust army of Satan that will deliver up the sons and daughters to prophecy against the Antichrist, as spoken of in Joel 2, and also by Peter in Acts 2. What these sons and daughters say will only be those words that the Holy Spirit speaks through them.

Joel said this locust army would march forward, and not miss a stride. Remember, it's not "locust" but men, and the battle which this army enters is a spiritual battle, where the victory is in their deception. Their battle cry is with words like love, joy, peace, brotherhood, equality, and a mixture of words promising peace and prosperity. In the Antichrist rule [the five months] everyone will be satisfied, as long as they continue to yield to this Antichrist.

The time "locust" has four stages, as stated in Joel 1. The part of the locust that exists in the swarming stage is five months. That five months staging period is always between May and September; so God is even giving us the season, or time frame when Antichrist will appear. And by that season, we have an hint of when the seventh trumpet will sound, and Jesus Christ will appear. However that instant is known only to the Father.

Why then the torment as that of a scorpion? This locust army will use the same methods a scorpion uses to attack it's prey and render it's prey harmless, during this five months period. Satan and his locust army will not be in any special form, but will appear exactly as a man, as we do. Satan was in the form of a man in the Garden of Eden when he tempted Eve, and his fallen angels appeared as men in Genesis 6:1-8, when they married the daughters of men and had "children" [Nephelim] by them.

The scorpion has a tail with a stinger in the tail. When they strike their prey, he sneaks up to it's prey and infects it's poison into the victim. Near it's mouth, it has a set of pinchers where it latches on to it's victim and pulls it to it's mouth. This is important, because the scorpion has no stomach, so it cannot digest it's own food within itself. Therefore the scorpion stings with the poison of it's tail to paralyze the victim, and then it vomits it's digestive juices [acids] into the body of the victim, then the victim's skin and body actually become the scorpion's stomach.

The acids turn everything it touches into mush. Then the scorpion inhales the mush from the victim's body and is gone. The victim is left defenseless from the beginning of the scorpion's strike, because the poison from the tail rendered the circulatory system and nervous system totally paralyzed, while the digestive acids turned the body to mush. Once stung by a scorpion, instantly you have no defense. You can't fight, run, or even think. You lay helpless to the devouring process of the scorpion.

Now that we see how the scorpion attacks, and the methods used by them; let's apply their methods, to Satan and that of this locust army. Satan and his army of fallen angels will take the lies [traditions] within your religion, and the false teaching that you believe to be true; and use it against you. All religions, Christian and otherwise, will be approached on the level and beliefs of their own understanding. They will use the doctrines of their choosing, and through that, the spiritual darts of lies and deception will come.

Like the scorpion uses your body for it's battle, and attack, so the angels of the locust army [not human] will use your mind as it's battleground. That is why you must be sealed in your mind [see verse 4] and with the proper armor on, which again is in Ephesians 6:10-20. Your battle is a spiritual one with the king of all demons, Satan, and he is ready for you.

The Antichrist has the authority from God, and the right to do business on earth, from the giver of all authority. He knows all your weaknesses, and he knows the Word as well as any theologian. Satan is set to do battle in your mind; and if your relying on false doctrine; like the rapture theory, your gone before the battle starts. If Revelation is still a mystery to you, you don't have a prayer of a chance.
You are about to go against the master of all deception, and the truth of God's word is the only thing Satan can't fight against. That is because the truth written in God's Word sets the limits God placed upon him as the Antichrist. How are you doing, friend?

Are there two Satans, one with the key, the other being bound by the angel having the key?

1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; (Rev 20:1-2 NKJ)

Right about now, your thinking "oops!!"

I ignore anything he said. So if you want I should read this or that, you first.

Actually, not understanding why you're referencing Rev 20 with what I posted, soooo,no oops here....

Rev 20 is after satan's reign....The key in Rev 9 was given to the star that fell who is satan as Ive stated

Revelation 9:1 "And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit

Who is the (him)?

Luke 10:18 "And He said unto them, "I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven."

Revelation 9:1 "And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit

Luke 10:18 "And He said unto them, "I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven."

Its not Satan in 9, because in 20 the SAME angel with the key is binding Satan, therefore he cannot be Satan. The time this occurs is irrelevant to my point:

Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit. (Rev 9:1 NKJ)

1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;
3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.
(Rev 20:1-3 NKJ)

And why would Satan attack his own followers with a plague of locusts?

Clearly he would not, therefore the angel with the key works for God, not the Devil.

A bit of friendly advice. Don't enter scripture with a preconceived idea, rather read the verse in its context over and over, till you understand the point the writer is making.

Use multiple translations, that "cuts through" the temptation to read into a text, a pretext. I offer this advice because what you did here, reminds me of me.

We are all guilty of "jumping to conclusions", and in spite of myself, I still do it on occasion. It takes discipline to stop that, and really read the text to learn what it says.

I recommend consulting as many commentaries as you can, because each will view the text a little differently, and bring out aspects other commentators missed or didn't think important. And that helps cut through the preconceptions also.

Without counsel, plans go awry, But in the multitude of counselors they are established. (Pro 15:22 NKJ)

What is true of plans is also true of Bible interpretation.

BUT don't expect majority opinion = the correct interpretation. Its often the lone comment on something in the text that just doesn't fit, that opens your mind to seeing it all very differently. Context is the key, what is consistent with all the details in the context, is the correct interpretation. Truth by definition is accord with all the facts.

Always follow your conscience, because even if you are wrong, God will judge following your conscience, right:

"...Their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) (Rom 2:15 NKJ)

Their conscience bearing witness, and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, (Rom 2:15 NAS)

Their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) (Rom 2:15 NIV)

[Metaphorically Stanley Tweetle, on "The Beach" (3:12) with Prince, in LEXX illustrates this. He is judged by himself, and argues against himself he did right. He loses the case, his conscience wouldn't excuse his actions.]

E-Sword is free and is an excellent beginning of your personal library. PC Study Bible and SwordSearcher are cheap. An oldy, Deluxe Bible Collection is good. But the best investment is Bibleworks 9.0 and Logos 5, the latter expensive.

Who was given the key in chapter 9?

The way I read it,satan was........

Revelation 9:1 "And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit [pit of the abyss]."

Who is the him ? Is he not the star that's fallling?

In this chapter, satan is about to set his cronnies free,in chapter 20 he gets bound...

Revelation 20:1 "And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand."

"Revelation 20:2 "And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,"

Two totally different things are happening in chapter 9 and 20

Excellent study on the 5th trumpet. And to the person who mentioned Joel you should go read it again because he is talking about the same kind of army. The army in chapter 2 is angelic not earthly.
Indeed YOU should...Dunbar.

This is NOT the 5th trumpet! Anyway you read it the majority of Joel 1 & 2 is God's judgment of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar. This is no angelic army! It's the Babylonians come to conquer Judah and take them away captive. You have taken a prophecy to Judah and pushed it into the future Dunbar. How can you miss what's going on here with Peter quoting Joel 2:28-32 in Acts 2???

OK, I will summarize Joel 2 for all the soundbite Christians!!

- Blow the trumpet in Zion - reference to the 7 trumpets
- the day of the Lord is coming **end-times**
- a strong army is coming and nothing like it has ever been seen before
- a fire before them and a fire behind
- horseman and chariots are mentioned similar to when Elijah was taken to heaven
- when they fall on the sword they are not wounded **not an earthly army**
- the earth shakes and the heaven trembles **revelation language**
- the LORD utters his voice before his army **6th trumpet - LORD's army**
- final reference to the early and latter rains **early rain - Pentecost** **latter rain in last days to ripen harvest Rev. 14:15**

the early and latter rain more likely refer to the beginning and end of the generation from 33-70 AD. At the end, the brilliance of the words of Christ about Israel's destruction would be recalled and made clear, and many people would finally believe.

That sticks closer to the apostle's times.

The summary is in error. Blowing the trumpet has NOTHING to do with Revelation trumpets. Always remember Israel blew trumpets to assemble all the time...so that won't fly. They blew trumpets for war, to prepare to move out or set camp (when they had the tabernacle), to assemble for feasts, and so on. The idea of blowing the trumpet is because there's about to be judgment of Judah is about to happen at the hands of Nebuchadnezzar. God used him to judge the entire region. The trumpet blowing opens the eyes of those Amos was prophesying to because they were so familiar with the blowing of trumpets. This trumpet is an alarm to Judah.

Try reading and correlating Jeremiah 20 and 21 with Joel.

so, how is that relevant? The question is: the identity of the angel with the key to the bottomless pit.

It is elementary deduction: If he binds satan, he is not satan.

To illustrate, if you drive the car, you are not the car.

Now you do not remind me of me. It is required of the exegete he think critically.

He dosn't get binded in chapter 9,that's the point you're missing,that's why you can't put 9 and 20 together,totally different happenings....He get's binded in 20,in 9 he's like just getting here......

That is irrelevant to the identity of the angel with the key to the abyss.

The jailor who locks the door on a prisoner is NOT the prisoner.

The angel with the key binds satan, therefore he is not satan.

I'm done explaining this. Its time for me to move on.

The jihadist and the demons that inspire and torment them.

The purpose of this page is to show that Revelation 9 is about Islam and suicide bombers are mentioned in the bible. It's not a study of the entire text.

For ages, many believed that the locust of Revelation 9 are Islamic. Revelation 9 actually says that the same demons that inspire the jihadist to commit the abominations of the earth, are actually attacking Muslims like scorpions to torment them for 5 months. Most people believe that the 200 million are an army from China. That's not so. They are very likely demons AND/OR "jihadist."

One author said,
______________________________________________________________________
Protestant scholars of the nineteenth century saw with amazing unanimity the rise and spread of Islam in this passage. Why? First consider where the locusts came from. They came from the “Abyss.” One of the finest Islamic scholars of the twentieth century, Abul A’la Mawdudi, wrote a book to introduce the English-speaking world to Islam. His subtitle called Arabia, the center of Mohammed’s activities, the “Abyss of Darkness.” The phrase “bottomless pit” in the above passage is actually the word for “abyss” in Greek. This prominent scholar used the exact words of the Bible when describing the center of Mohammed’s activity.

Why locusts? Because of the Arabs’ connection to the locust. The Ismaelites, forerunners of the modern Muslim, have as their national insignia a locust in the Bedoween romance “Antwar.” There is also a story of Mohammed that has locusts falling into his hands bearing the inscription “We are the Army of the Great God.” So here are two connections, but it doesn’t stop there.

Consider the appearance of the locusts:

The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle. On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces. Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth. They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle. They had tails and stings like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months. They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon. (Rev 9:7-11)

The Arabs were widely renown for their skill with a horse; according to Adam Clarke it was as if the horse and the rider were one. The Muslim wore a yellow turban as a crown, according to the poem “Antwar.” As for the face and the hair, according to Scripture a man is not to shave his beard (Lev 19:27), and the long hair of a woman is her glory (1 Cor 11:15). Arabs of the day were described as having shoulder-length hair and beards. The teeth of the lion probably represented their ferocity in battle. The breastplate reminds us of the Koran’s statement that “God hath given you coats of mail.”

The tails and the stings of the scorpion were likely references to the Muslims’ ability to shoot backwards accurately while in full retreat. The power of their tails probably represented the poisonous doctrines of Islam that they were spreading to the world.

What of the other limitations placed on the army? They couldn’t harm vegetation. The Koran commands the Muslims to leave the vegetation in invaded territories alone. Muslim armies were also commanded to leave the monks in the monestaries alone and monestaries were not to be burned. These people, the Muslims thought, had God’s seal of protection on them. The Muslims were not allowed to kill the church, only torture it. That is, they couldn’t destroy the church, but they did set a series of calamities on it for five prophetic months.

My comments....

"And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, (suicide vest)

The word for breastplates is the word 'thorax" and it means,

Breastplate:

primarily, "the breast," denotes "a breastplate or corselet," consisting of two parts and protecting the body on both sides, from the neck to the middle. It is used metaphorically of righteousness, Eph 6:14; of faith and love, 1Th 5:8, with perhaps a suggestion of the two parts, front and back, which formed the coat of mail (an alternative term for the word in the NT sense); elsewhere in Rev 9:9, 17.

Breastplates were held by straps that went over the shoulders or around the neck.

...and of jacinth, (dark red)...

From Vines....
Jacinth:
signifies "hyacinthine," perhaps primarily having the color of thehyacinth. Some regard its color as that of the martagon lily, a dusky red. According to Swete, the word in Rev 9:17 is "doubtless meant to describe the blue smoke of a sulphurous flame."

...and brimstone:.... (explosion) This is the only place the word 'brimstone' or Strongs #2306 is used in the NT. The word is Strong's # 2303 is used 7 times. #2306 comes from 2303 and is said, "(in its original sense of "flashing)."

...and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; (Babylonians) and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone."

John even tells us how many jihadist there are in the world when this happens.

In 2006-7 Daniel Pipes said there were 300 million jihadist and 400 million radicals in the world. I thought that number to be a bit high on the jihadist but close on the radicals.

"And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them."

That would be 200 million.

For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails:

The only two places tails are mentioned are here and on the dragon of Rev. 12. Their mouth is probably the holy war teachings of the Koran, praying to Allah, and the Imams promoting terrorism aka Satan's will of destruction.

"for their tails were like unto serpents,"

Tails and serpents are icons of the dragon and Lucifer. Lucifer and the dragon make up Islam's morning star and crescent moon!

"and had heads, and with them they do hurt."

Heads could be symbolic of people or Islamic clerics and leaders who encourage them to commit jihad. Look at the word "hurt" and apply it to a suicide bombing.

I consider Revelation 9 to be the strangest and most demonic of all chapters in the New Testament.
