Anyone familiar with this book or the entire series of books (Children of the Last Days) by Michael O'Brien?

I'm reading the book "Father Elijah" and I was hooked from the first chapter; actually I would consider it in my "top favorites" of books to have read. The book-or perhaps his whole series in general-is entirely relate-able and shows the contemporary issues the Church is facing and will continue to face. It's scary actually, which is probably why I'm so drawn to this book.

But that aside, I've seen reviews for this book, as well as the whole series, that states that the books are the Catholic version of the "Left Behind" series. I'm not sure how true this is because O'Brien's characters feel like they are living, breathing human beings and the deep knowledge of the Church. I'm assuming that because it's apocalyptic in genre that this series is being grouped together with "Left Behind?"

I don't think I'm going to read the entire series right now because my mind tends to wander, and I found "Father Elijah" to be the most interesting book out of the series (at least in terms of how the books are being described). I figure if I'll read another O'Brien book it will be "Voyage to Alpha Centauri" since I love sci-fi and space operas.

Very good reading though I must say.:)

Another fan here. Loved THIS particular book of the series that I've re-read it twice now although I haven't read the series. Don't know how far you are into the book so I don't want to spoil anything for you, just want you to know that there is another fan of it out there.

I read it; I think that it's mediocre, but it has moments of brilliance. Too much of the book is dialogue-driven, if you ask me, and it was a blunder that he makes the Pope John Paul II. It doesn't matter that O'Brian never names the Pope; that Pope is John Paul II. Always in my mind, then, was the thought "it never happened."

I have never heard of this book :)

Thank you SO much for sharring this with us, I was just thinking about how much I would like to read a Catholic End Times book a few weeks ago, God bless you my dear sister in Christ

I have just finished reading 'Lord of the World' by Hugh Robert Benson. The language is a little archaic as it was published over 100 years ago; but it is a gripping read from start to finish. I recommend it to you. :)

If you really are interested in Catholic end times books, you might want to look at Pierced By A Sword from Bud McFarlane. (It also contains some explanations of some Catholic Sacraments.)

Reviews - Pierced by a Sword

I got my free copy from Catholicity, but I think Amazon also carries it.

I was trying to find a copy of the book
I read a little of it online for free but to read a book I like to be able to hold it in my hand

I found it at a bookstore but it was very expensive

I have some more good Catholic books to recommend if anyone is interested:

1. The Unaborted Socrates: A Dramatic Debate on the Issues Surrounding Abortion by Peter Kreeft

2. Surprised By Truth by Patrick Madrid

3. Salvation is from the Jews by Roy Schoeman

4. Fatima for Today: The Urgent Marian Message of Hope by Fr. Andrew Apostoli, CFR

While these books are not "Catholic" they are good for issues which are contemporary to Catholicism and perhaps other forms of Christianity:

1. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

2. Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital by Sheri Fink

BTW let's not spoil anything for "Father Elijah," I'm only about 90 pages in.
