Apparently it was some kind of internal power struggle, I read both him and his daughter Shirley (who was slated to take over for him) were both kicked out at the same time.

From what I read, he had only softened when it came to treatment of other Westboro members, and not necessarily his beliefs on outsiders. Did you read differently?

My nephew belongs to the Patriot Guard which is a group that blocks access to military funerals to keep Westboro away

This made me cry. That is just sick. My heart grieves for whatever pain the family is going through... and listening to a bunch of people cheer with joy that they can run off the religious nut jobs isn't what I'd want to hear on the day I mourn the death of my child, or sibling, or parent.
