80,000 Russian troops staged at Ukraine - what now, Obama?

Not agreeing with everything your political opponent wants to do is hardly "sabotaging" him.

Actually the Republican party started off Obama's first term by their leadership telling the rank and file to obstruct everything Obama did.

Of course the whitewash of this was that they wanted to make sure their needs were met. However their needs included collapsing the American credit rating (which they succeeded in doing), shutting down the US government (which they succeeded in doing), punishing the poor by cutting food stamps (which they succeeded in doing).

In the interim Obama did get meaningful healthcare reform through which the Republicans then took to trying to overturn in more than 40 PURELY SYMBOLIC VOTES. Toward the end the GOP itself knew it wasn't going to work. Yet they wasted our money to do it.

In addition the GOP has taken unprecedented steps to stymie Obama at every turn:

Source: The Senate GOP's Unprecedented Obstruction In Five Charts | Right Wing Watch

The GOP started off with the intent to obstruct and they did an admirable job.

Meanwhile their base kept spreading lies about Obama's birth, Obama's religion and every single bizarre conspiracy they could find.

6 straight years of this.

Obama has taken over the largest economic collapse (which happened on Bush's watch) and tried (TRIED) to turn the country around to avoid Depression. This has succeeded.

Every SINGLE thing the Right brings up to complain about Obama is paralleled in OTHER REPUBLICAN ADMINISTRATIONS;

1. Benghazi? Look at what Ronald Reagan did in light of the Beirut bombings in the early 80's. Almost EXACTLY the same thing as what the Obama administration did in light of Benghazi

2. OPeration Fast and Furious? Yeah, this was a follow-on program to Operation Wide Receiver, another GUN RUNNING program in the Bush administration.

3. Putin invasions: well did W do anything when Putin invaded Georgia?

4. Failure to enforce laws duly passed: W made a LOT of "signing statements" which are ways the president says "I'm not going to enforce this law". But only Obama gets called on the carpet for this.

Unless, of course, you're also saying that democrats sabotaged Bush? Or is that somehow completely different, because you don't agree with Bush?

As the charts above show: Bush had it MUCH BETTER than Obama did.

I THINK what Jeff is saying is that we need to have those troops should we NEED to go to war at some point not that we declair war right now.

Why should we even be getting involved in this? I bet that if there was a revolution in Mexico or Canada, we would be getting our troops ready. Would you be okay with Russia coming in to help Mexico or Canada against us? Why is what goes on in Ukraine our business? Let what happens happen. If it is okay for us to get involved in this, then I am sure you would have no problem with Russia coming in and helping a country on our border in their revolution, correct?

"Ukraine officials yesterday accused Russia of conducting a large military build-up near the country’s border that raises the threat of an invasion.

Andriy Parubiy, secretary of Ukraine’s national security and defence council, said Russia had deployed more than 80,000 troops, up to 270 tanks and 140 combat planes close to the border, creating the “threat of a full-scale invasion from various directions”.

Mr Parubiy said the Russian troops were as close as two or three hours’ drive from Kiev, the Ukrainian capital."

What now, Obama? Still think we need to reduce the size of our Army significantly?

If you just allowed a division of the Ukraine with the Russian bits going to Russia and the Western side being put on the path for EU and NATO membership you would solve the stability issue on this frontier. The frontier would then be set and you could reduce your troop count and save the extra dollars. It is because you want to make an issue out of this that there is a problem. Obama can do nothing in the Crimea regardless of the defence budget so he should not have reved up his rhetoric to suggest that he could. It just makes him look weak and ineffective.

lol!

The balls in O's court. Don't bring anyone else into it.

And the moment Obama takes action without "bringing anyone else into it," he's be lambasted as a "dictator."

My understanding is if we reduced our military as planned we'd still be the largest on the planet.

Correct we spend more on our military than Russia, China, Iran, and all the other supposed boogie man out there combined.

Exactly. President Obama cannot win whatever he does. He will get vilified no matter what he does.

Ah, but will he be villified for doing the right thing or for doing the wrong thing? That makes all the difference.

Remember: if there's any way to BLAME OBAMA it will be pursued by the Right.

In the case of Crimea and Ukraine the Right feels that Putin is a superior leader to Obama. If Obama had been more of an "imperial president" they'd be happier.

Oh, wait, no, Obama is a dictator which means Putin must be a great egalitarian freedom-loving leader...

But wait...wait...Putin is a brutal...

oh wait...I forgot....

OBAMA BAD. Even it means making Putin into some bizarre picture of virtue to achieve this.

Obama bad.

Baaaaaaaaad.

This will be liberals in a few years when we have a Republican president. You think this is only because of Obama? There will always be people opposed to the president, so it's useless to whine and complain about other people opposed to the current president.

If the European countries are going to take the lead on this they'll need to make major increases in military spending. Inevitably, this will mean further scaling back their welfare states. Very probably it would require Germany to turn from her post WWII pacifism and take on the role of a major military power.

I think you are right. If anything, it will send countries running to the EU asking for membership. And those countries will see themselves striving for qualification for entry. I see this as good for the EU in the long run.

No, I believe in maintaining the strength of the U.S. military, definitely don't want to reduce size of it, but as far as I'm concern, stay the hell out of regional disputes and conflicts that don't concern us. Seems like most of Crimea (and even a sizeable minority of Ukraine itself) want the Russians there.

He didn't even mention Obama, so why would you even say that?

It's rather obvious....given the OP's thread title and history pinning blame on the POTUS for events beyond his control or influence.

No, I don't blame Russia's attack on Crimea on Obama. I am more concerned with our response.

Putin has shown his intentions with Georgia and now Crimea. American and European reaction could be to create and tighten up military alliances with the Baltic States, with Poland, and with any of the 'stans' on the south that may be interested.

That would go doubly so for any of the states that are intent on setting up societies based on freedom and civil rights. These are the states that Europe and America need to be especially interested in.
Russia is demonstrating that aggression is going to be the card played. Ergo, there is a need for a good defense to reinforce the gains that the free world had already made into Eastern Europe.
