I am caught. Contemporary music just all sucks. Christian or not, I don't like it. But if I listen to the metal/etc that I do like, it just isn't holy. So, I'm searching for metal/punk/whatever that isn't offensive. But where to find? I don't know.

Anyone else feel this way? Even in the remote desert island?

What is "holy," and what is "holy" music? What is "unholy" music?

Does holiness have a sound, and if so does it sound inhuman, as if it couldn't be enjoyed by any "normal" human? If that's true, then wouldn't a "holy" God hate humanity and basically just want to squash everything, and if holiness had a sound wouldn't it be more accurately expressed through something like death metal in that case? I ask because I've been on that trip, even though I thought that version of "holiness" was expressed with a slightly higher-pitched tone of voice and different words, but I made a u-turn. Rather, I pay attention moreso to the thoughts and intent of the hearts of the artists.

No I don't like Slayer because of the stuff that moves them. Yes I do like some metal, and I'm picky about what I listen to. Anger or something that sounds angry isn't necessarily unholy, but it's not murderous when it's right.

I don't know if you are looking for any suggestions, but I thought I'd leave some just in case.

August Burns Red, For Today, Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster, Demon Hunter.. some really good christian bands I like. Not gonna give you whole list haha
There are a ton of amazing Christian bands that are geared more towards metal/hardcore/screamo ( if you're into that.)

Also, you should check out the Radiou website. They only play music by Christian artists.
If you go to their site and go to "On air" ---> "Battery" it's their section that is completely dedicated to that genre of music, and lists all those bands alphabetically.

: )

The music I usually listen to is anything but Christian friendly. Although I don't really understand or care about the lyrics. Might be a fine line, but even if the song has evil themes, if you don't pay attention to the lyrics does it really matter? I just like rough and raw sounds in my music.

Harsh lyrics can be entertaining too, but a lot of it is cheesy. I actually hate Satanic themes, but you just have to ignore them.

thank you both. not really into a theological discussion about music, but slayer is one that might be fun but not exactly holy. holy? whatever that means to music.

and yes, recommends might work better here. I didn't really think of that til now.

Yeah, np. I wasn't trying to debate or anything, that's just how I am normally. I mean, you could ask something like "what's your favorite ice cream?" and I would be like "why do we even like ice cream and what does this say about the meaning of life?"

Listen to Petra or Stryper. These are older Christian rock groups that are holy and provide a good rock alternative.

I've felt this way at times. With rock or metal there are songs that I'll like just for the guitar riffs and whatnot, but at times it becomes hard to ignore that the lyrics are glorifying things that go against my beliefs. If it starts to irritate or annoy me I'll turn it off and listen to something else.

I also echo your dislike for contemporary music - although there is some Christian contemporary music that I like, but I'm very selective about it (I'm very selective about all of the music that listen to though).

Country music can have some uplifting or more neutral themes but that's a tough sell for some people (Some people just don't like it, and I get that. I was the same way in my early twenties.) Otherwise I tend to be drawn to "secular" Christian bands like Flyleaf, Creed, Evanescence, Alter Bridge, Collective Soul, and Lifehouse. Some of that stuff is getting old though, since there aren't many bands like that around anymore.
