Oh I'm sorry Bear, I thought your OP was sarcastic and that you thought it would be a mistake to pull our troops out of all other countries and stop our aid programs.... My bad Bear. I'd have to disagree then :)

Is the point of this thread that America doesn't take criticism well? Because if it is, point well made. Being thin-skinned does not really show the best side of the world's most powerful nation.

LOL!!! :D

Here it is folks.

The setup....

"Is the point of this thread that America doesn't take criticism well?"

and the knock down....

"Because if it is, point well made. Being thin-skinned does not really show the best side of the world's most powerful nation."

For anyone interested, this is the classic "Straw Man", argument tactic.

Here's how it works. Somewhere in the debate, you set up a diversion. Then, you attack that diversion.

Classic. :D

What is the problem with applauding the good things America has done and criticizing the bad? It is as though Americans feel we all must either approve of everything America does or criticize everything America does. Why can't America keep doing the "good" things, and stop doing the "bad" things? (I'm not sure who exactly should judge what the good and bad things are, but I'll do it if they want me to be the official judger of American policies :) - naturally, I'm sure I'm at the top of Bush's list.)

Why can't America keep doing the "good" things, and stop doing the "bad" things? (

Why can't people stop griping about the bad things and start thinking about the good things?

I'm with Bear on this one, 110%. I'm sick of it all. I'll gladly take my taxes that are being sent to people who hate me, and divert it to children of World Vision. At least they don't bite the hand that feeds you.

There is a big difference between saying something, or the sentiment being like, "Even though America has it's faults, overall I think it is a good country.", and "America is a capitalistic and greedy country, and is the biggest threat to the world."

WITHDRAW ALL U.S. MILITARY AND HUMANITARIAN AID NOW!!!!

It's a great idea Bear, but do you know what would happen?

Everyone would start pointing fingers and starting threads, such as, "America ~ the greedy country who doesn't share its wealth". Waa-waa-waa.

Get it? The US is darned if we do, and darned if we don't. Except for those who ride the fence; they get the good view.

I'm just gonna keep on sponsering a couple of kids in South America, donating to worthy causes, support my President according to Romans 12, and trust My Lord to deliver my family and me from evil.

Amen!

Hello?

I'll gladly take my taxes that are being sent to people who hate me

Such as...?

You've got Australians and Canadians criticising (as opposed to hating) the US here. Neither of us benefit from your taxes.

Come and join us in the real world...

Why do you persist in a resort to the straw man fallacy?

It only reduces your credibility further.

The Bear -

And, let another country facilitate and foot the bill for the almost useless UN.

They're already doing it.

Your country simply refuses to pay until she's threatened with disciplinary action, remember? The UN ticks on despite your lack of funds.

You greatly over-estimate your importance.

The Good Samaritan was of a different race, country and culture, yet he stopped and even spent his own money to help someone else. He very probably did not receive any thanks for it.

The Bible doesn't say the Good Samaritan was stabbed in the back for his troubles, either.:(

Bear,

I'm sorry to jump in on your discussion, but I'm intrigued by your 1) role play or 2) your straight forwardness!

I don't believe we should withdraw our troops or humanitarian aid.

I'm a firm believer of having a servants heart, a hearts desire to be Christ-Like. For even Christ said, "For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to Me. Then the righteous will answer Him saying, "Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You drink? And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? And when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You? And the King will answer and say to them, "Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even to the least of them, you did it to Me."

Jesus goes on to say to those on His left who did not give Him drink, food, visitation, clothes, or invitations... He responds

"Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me. And these will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

How can I sit and watch starving children and refuse them food, drink, or clothes? How can I sit and watch the horrors I see from communism, and acts of pure devastation as in the chemical weapons used on the Kurds?

Stop humanitarian Aid or pull all troops out because people don't like me or America? I knew I would be persecuted when I became a follower of Christ. I'm happy to serve those who can't serve themselves!

My 2 cents worth.

Dan

This thread gives the liberals what they want. A complete pacifistic response from America and when you give them what they want, the world will go and shoot itself in the foot. Everyone knows that if the U.S. wasn't around and didn't have the will and determination to keep the free world, free then lots of places in Europe, the Middle-East & Asia would be under the oppressive rule of another regime. Israel wouldn't exist, Yugoslavia would be the next Hitler state, Korea would be one Marxist nation and Taiwan would been part of mainland China. Pakistan & India would have nuked each other out of existence, the Soviet Union would still exist, but at a much reduced capacity and Africa would just be one continent of war.

If America withdrew from it's obligations to protect the free world, there wouldn't be much of a free world around. However, Bear is right on one account. Nations need to start backing up their own actions. France & Germany whine and moan about a war in Iraq being wrong, yet the minute America says: "Screw you then" and withdraws it's $10bn per year investment in NATO, you'll soon have these nations crying and whining that they can't get anything done. It's rather pathetic.

France & Germany have become complacent in post WW2 years. This same complacency will be their undoing. America is standing up to the terrorists and the regimes that would threaten the freedoms we all enjoy.

But I'll play along with this. I say America should withdraw all military and humanitarian aid and let the world solve it's problems in their own way, just don't come running to America when you can't get anything done.

To add to the debate about christianity as a individual responsibility only, in the Bible God talks alot about nations, and the responsibilities they have. For example, God is the king of all the nations (Psalms 47:8), God rebukes nations (Psalms 9:5), God makes nations an inheritance (Psalms 2:8), his eyes watch the nations (Psalms 66:7), he will judge nations (Psalms 110:6), in heaven there is a tree with leaves for the 'healing of the nations (Rev 22:2). And the references go on and on, God talks alot about nations. Bear, you obviously love your country and feel hurt when people slander it's government. This is o.k., however it should be kept in perspective. As christians our alligence is to God first, if God tells us to love our enemies and provide food to the naked and the poor (as someone else pointed out), then these duties come before our duty to our nationalist feelings. America has a tradition has a Christian country, it would be shame to see that be defeated by insecurity over remarks made by others. Just as people pulled down Jesus, despite all the good he did, people will pull down your country. And the best way to respond is like Jesus did, he kept on going, out of love for his Father and his people, not because of the response he got.

Alright, You think I'm restating your argument for my advantage? Your essential argument says that since the world says we are so EVIL!!!!! we should withdraw all our armed forces and humanitarian aid. Correct? So which world leader called the United States evil?

And yes, Liberals all have on agenda and agree completely on every issue. There are a lot like conservatives like that too. By the way, I doubt Yugoslavia will become the next "Hitler" state because Yugoslavia no longer exsists....
