Anyone know this film? I saw it for the first time the other day. Near the beginning, there's a burial scene. As they walk through the Russian cemetery, there's the Byzantine crosses in the background, of course, but there are also these chevron shaped things on posts. You know the upside-down "v" shape like this - [^]. Some might have had a bar across the bottom making them into triangles, I'm not sure. Anyone know what these are?

I saw the movie a few years ago, but I don't think I caught it at the beginning. I saw it once before that, but I was still a child then. Anyhow, I don't remember. Sorry.

were they on the crosses? cause if they were I have seen them in a lot of cemeteries and graveyards. I think they keep debris and weather and such from falling on the Cross

Y'know I saw it on cable TV so I can't rewind. I'm not sure. Best I remember, some of them had something under them, couldn't tell what. Others seemed to have nothing under them.

You are correct.
Outdoor piety is normal in this cold country; one thing that I never saw in the US was a thing they call a "chasovnya", which translates as "chapel" in the dictionaries, but it's actually a four-sided obelisk with icons on it. You can see them in many villages and towns here. People stop, cross themselves and pray, and move on. I don't have a pic on my old iPad.

Give it a few days. Somebody will come up with a theological/spiritual/symbolic reason. It's what we do.

Somebody gave us an icon with a little roof over it for our wedding. It's in our garden now. We'd have it out front, but stuff gets stolen if it's left out front.

:D That's what I was thinking. It crossed my mind that it sort of looked like an arrow pointed toward Heaven; beautifully appropriate for a graveyard. I'll check back and see if there's any more "official" interpretation.

absolutely nothing official about my musing, but my immediate thought was that in addition to protecting the cross...If it forms a triangle with the mid bar of the three bar cross (as some of them seem to do, others not so much), could it be a symbol for the Holy Trinity?
