You didnt read the article, did you?

Yeah, I did. Adaptation of an existing system, not invention of a new one where one was never there before.

Yeah, yeah, I know----"Oh, but it takes billions and billions of years, with each millennium or so seeing just a teensy-tiny change, until you get a whole new rig!"

I heard that one. See if there's anything new on the flip side of the record. ;)

Republicans' belief in evolution plummets, poll reveals - CBS News

I'm placing this in politics since I'm going more for demography than a scientific or theological debate.

Moving beyond what I obviously have to say about this, I'd like to ask what people think caused this. I doubt there are many people who go from supporting evolution to thinking it's a load of crock. My best guess is that there's been a brain drain in the Republican party because moderates are being scared off by the Tea Party.

It's also important to note that only 67% of Democrats believe in evolution.

Truth is not determined by majority vote.

The adaptation of a chambered stomach to allow the digestion of cellulose is no less complex than a photosensitive cell gradually forming an eye. The only difference is scale.

This isnt a teeny tiny change. This is a Big Deal.

While there's plenty of blame to be had with religious folks and conservatives, the scientific community is pretty terrible at promoting things like this, teaching the public about them, and countering false information that gets passed around. They essentially need something like Media Matters or snopes to bat down all of the anti-evolution craziness.

NCSE and Talk Origins.

Of course not. Fortunately, evolution has a bit more evidence than that, and much more than any other theory, not to mention nearly universal support from the scientific community.

Anyway, back on topic. I agree that groupthink plays a role in this, but I would still guess that this is more a matter of people who believe in evolution leaving the Republican party than Republicans who believe in evolution switching sides.

Not that big a deal. Punctuated equilibrium vs. phyletic gradualism. Been around for years. I don't subscribe to the idea that it's evolution, but if it works for you, hey. ;)

To drift back towards the OP, I suspect that part of this is a statistical effect due to the purge of moderate Republicans.

I know I left after well over 20 years as a moderate Republican.

If you take away the moderates then you are going to be left with a much smaller range of opinion.

Just a thought,

If we'd make it a level playing field for all candidates instead of permitting the dominance of the restrictive two-party monopoly, we'd have a much wider range of opinion.

It would most likely end up as another 2 party system - 2 parties getting 80% of the vote and the rest fighting over the remaining 20%
