John Wesley prayed when he was in distress. Below is one of his prayers:
O most blessed and gracious God,
who alone can heal a wounded spirit and quiet a troubled mind:
to You do I cry for help.
O great physician of body and soul,
uphold and comfort my weak and dejected spirit.
Since You alone can relieve me, to You do I call for relief.
O hear my most earnest supplication, and make me possess
an easy, quiet and cheerful spirit, for my trust is in You.
–John Wesley (1703-1791) Evangelist and Founder of Methodism

Thank you for that MoreCoffee... And I must say here that your communication on CF is most excellent (esp. when referring to my hero... John Wesley.... Hehe).

When I was in my twenties I went to the Va Tech library and read a large , 4" thick book on the history of Methodism. When John Wesley would introduce his Methodist doctrine he was often greeted with mobs and stones. At one time it looked like the whole city was in uproar against him. They marched up to the place he was staying, grabbed him out of the house, and then proceeded to take him to the Thames River, where they were intending to tie a millstone around him and throw him off the bridge. As they were getting ready to do this he asked for a moment of prayer, and after the prayer he began to speak. His eloquent speaking saved him a wet death that day!

I really do not believe that Wesley intended the denomination. He wanted it to be a gathering of believers of many sects together. So the Methodist would gather for their prayer and revival meetings, and then return to their home church.

It is too bad that the Wesleyan revival does not continue. When the Wesleyan revival turns into a denomination they loose their uniqueness and end up like every one else.

I never knew he came close to being executed. That's surprising.

I srsly considered joining a Wesleyan church too btw.

I will give the same answer I gave my daughter-in-law about her bad dreams.

Get up! Pray the Trisagion Prayers or at least 'Our Father' (she's a beginner) and clear your mind of all earthly things.

God be gracious to me a sinner.

Saint Gertrude suffered in this life; she offered her suffering to God because it was hard to bear so she prayed like this,
My Divine Saviour, Jesus,
You loved me to such a degree
as to suffer and die for my salvation.
Through the love I have for You,
I most willingly offer to your honour
all that I have ever suffered in the past,
am now suffering,
or will suffer in the future.
This is the basis and motive
of the love which animates me.
Your love enables me to suffer with joy.
I will to suffer because You suffered
and because You want me to suffer,
for I love You more than myself.
Amen.

Here is a link that might help: http://www.christianforums.com/t7781982/

Basically, withdraw, meditate, write and repeat until you understand what it is you are writing.

By comparing what you write with scripture, you will know the truth and your mind will no longer be troubled.

A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance.

O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.

There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness. I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh.

I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart. Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me. My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.

They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.

But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth. Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs. For in thee, O LORD, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God. For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me: when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.

For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me. For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin. But mine enemies are lively, and they are strong: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied.

They also that render evil for good are mine adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is. Forsake me not, O LORD: O my God, be not far from me. Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.
Psalms 38:1-22 KJV
