I was thinking about commissioning a paired set of the Theotokos and Christ as a wedding gift for my fiancé and me next year. Is there any tradition in the church that specifies who should get the icons for the wedding - or would the icons I get be acceptable for that? The reason I am asking is due to baptismal crosses traditionally being provided by the sponsor. I would really love to have this be my gift though. My fiancé commissioned an icon for my Chrismation so I would love to in turn commission this for us both.

Ask around--Ive not heard any traditions in general regarding them, just that they are given. My grandparents have their set of icons in their dining room (no idea if this was their wedding set, though I doubt it) and my mother kept theirs on her dresser. Ours is one gigantic one (b/c my mom could only afford one, as quoted by the iconographer, and then it turned out to be MASSIVE instead of a reasonable size. She probably could have afforded 2 smaller ones), so it is in our corner, and we hope to get the same priest to make a set of small ones and donate the GIGANTIC one (of Theotokos and Christ) to a mission.
