I recently read a thread about prophecy on here, which made me a bit reluctant to ask this question, but I am going to ask anyway.

Are all prophecies out of your control, in that the Lord will give you a certain word for someone at a certain time, and you just have to be obedient and relay the message? Or can you use it like any other gifting, and have control of it to use it when you see fit?

Does anyone get words from the Lord that would be able to help me in this area?

I'd like to say for the record that I'm in no way trying to brag or show off, my life is really a disaster, and I just want some honest feedback in this area. I have not been faithful in my walk with the Lord all these years, and I've fallen into sin many times. The fact that He still uses me really just amazes me, that He can use someone as sinful and flawed as myself.

In Christ.

If God gave you something prophetic in nature to share, you will not hold it back.

God will not be mocked.

Anything prophetic will in noway go against the Word of God (KJV)

If you are receiving "messages" of a prophetic nature and you are living in iniquity (known sin) than the message is most likely not from God.

God abhors sin and will turn His face from it (you)

What exactly do you mean by "words"

I've seen some pastors say they have a "word
of knowledge"?

I don't know what you would call it, I thought it was words of knowledge. For instance during a small bible study last week the Lord told me to tell one of the guys there that he would be a pastor. Things in that nature.

I'm learning God has unfathomable mercy.

manofsorrows, when you receive "a word," you'll want to ask Yahweh if it's to be given or if it's to be prayed about or both. Also, you'll want to find out when and how it's to be given. Also, you might want to consider putting the words you're given as well as dreams and/or visions in a journal.

Thank you for your advice, I usually just remember everything instead of writing it down.

What do you think the difference between getting a word from the Lord and prophesying is? Also, these words come without warning, should I always expect them to come unexpectedly?

Most times. But it's always wise to ask the Lord what He wants you to do with what He is showing you. There is a time and a season for all things. Ask Him, "Lord what do you want me to do with this that you are showing me?"

I Cor 14
29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge. 30 But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged. 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

Bless you.

"Are all prophecies out of your control, in that the Lord will give you a certain word for someone at a certain time, and you just have to be obedient and relay the message?"

Absolutely. If YOU are involved in the creation of the message, then it's NOT the "Gift of prophesy".

"The fact that He still uses me really just amazes me, that He can use someone as sinful and flawed as myself."

It shouldn't surprise you. Since the prophesy flows THROUGH you, and is sourced by the Holy SPirit, your PERSONAL LIFE isn't an issue. Caiaphas the High priest Gave an accurate, Holy Spirit sourced prophetic utterance, WHILE HE WAS PLANNING TO MURDER GOD'S SON!!!! (John 11:49-52)

That's NOT to say that continuing a sinful life style won't have personal consequences, but the Gifts and calling of God are "Without Repentance". (Rom 11:29)

Manifesting the "Gifts" (If they're genuine) is GOOD ministry to the recipients, but WORTHLESS to you if done in the wrong motivation. (1 Cor 13:1-3)

I really appreciate your help, thank you so much for those verses.

Interesting point about Caiaphas, I just read that yesterday and I hadn't made that connection.
