Seems a bit lenient to me.

It would be exceptionally lenient it were rape by the normal definition. There is nothing I have seen to indicate any force or intimidation was involved. In short only sex with an underaged girl.

The claim has been made that the girl was mature for her age, if that really meant emotionally mature not just 'well developed' it could make a difference.

Other details matter also. That 15 year suspended sentence plays out a lot differently depending on conditions involved. Suspended never means it is just gone. So the question is what would trigger it and does it ever go away?

In the area of justice (as opposed just law) I'd want to know the circumstances of her suicide. If it was a result of him dumping her it comes off rather differently than if it was a result of her still loving him and hating herself because of what the system was doing to him, or even worse it was a result of the same people who are calling for his head also treating her like dirt.

EDIT: Forgot one rather important issue. If she was in his class it changes everything. That adds an element of undue influence and positional power, even if he made no effort to use it, that makes the sentence far too lenient, even if she had been 18. I think many are assuming such, it may be the case. But I have not seen it said explicitly so far.

He was a teacher at her school, so the authority figure issues does matter.

So, if you are going to groom and rape someone, pick a "troubled youth". So kids with problems get to be victimized.

Had not seen the troubled youth part before. That makes the Judges decision disgusting. It borders on "she was a [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] so it doesn't matter". I was thinking of 'mature' in an entirely different direction, actually grown up, more able to make mature rational decisions than most her age. Judging by subsequent events it is looking more like she was a vulnerable and previously exploited kid.

BTW whenever I try one of your links I end up at the same page which has only one readable line and a bunch of grey where one would expect any real details.

Such a shame. :SMH:

There have been a torrent of these occasions where teachers claim that they did not start the relationship until the girl was of legal age. This completely ignores the grooming that must have begun before she was of legal age. Nobody turns 18 and BAM!! suddenly they are in love with 'teach' and having sex. Ugh. These guys (and any women doing the same thing) should be never allowed near kids ever again.

Never allowed near kids again...they are "teachers" who belong to unions.
Not once they have been found guilty of raping children. People on a sex offender register don't get their job back teaching kids.

Being in a union like the teachers are is not protection against the state's licensing board.

Just the ones for this thread.

EDIT: I see the problem they want you to answer a survey first.

After doing so I get in, not an overly intrusive or long one. Just 2 questions.

Just don't give them any money.
