• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I know that the Bible speaks of partaking of communion unworthily. I doubt my salvation so much and it is a fearful thing for me to take communion because I don't want God's judgment upon me for doing it unworthily.

Is partaking of communion an issue for anyone else who feels unforgiven by God?

Thanks,
Rebecca

Yes, it was for me for a long time. That really is not an OCD issue for me anymore. I do try to make sure I am in right relationship with God when I partake. (And no, I don't obsess about that!!! Things are never "perfect") but by right relationship, I mean confessing any recently unconfessed known sins and not knowingly harboring ill-will towards others. Yes, I suspect communion is areal sticking point for those of us who battle OCD.

I almost hate to mention what I did above ....like confessing sins because that's something OCD can get into this and go to seed with iy! Basically, if we feel our heart is right with God and others and we are recognizing the significance of the Body and the Blood, I think we can go ahead and partake with confidence that we are not doing it unworthily. Again, we can get "hung up" and obsess about any of those aspects like well... What I didn't confess everything, what if I forgot something? Again, I think it's a heart attitude, not perfection. Does that make sense? I think also if you look at the context in which Paul was warning them, you can see there was wuite a bit going on there that was wrong.

I also think the doubting of salvation is an aspect of your OCD battle. Therefore, it occurred to me, I didn't even address that!

I never feel as if I've really forgiven people or have been forgiven. I've sometimes told God that I've forgiven and am letting go, but I don't really think that I have. I feel I hold on to things. This is the same thing though about salvation too, that I don't feel that I let go and let God save me or something. Lately, I've been asking God more to help me genuinely forgive and not to hold on to grudges instead of saying that I do forgive. There are issues in certain relationships that I need to deal with in the right way and address without being a doormat, yet forgive for the things that I feel I've been wronged in too. So, the salvation issue on top of feeling I've not really forgiven others too just makes it all the worse.

Thanks so much Kay Kay for taking the time to share your struggles with and to encourage me!

That is why I was almost hesitant to mention the forgiving others thing! The thing is with most issues.....OCD demands certainty and perfection. Probably very few of us forgive "perfectly and completely" if the hurt or offense was really deep. There are times I have to go back and "re-forgive" someone if that makes any sense. I think the main thing in that is that we are TRYING to forgive them. We are not intentionally and deliberately holding onto offenses. Regarding communion, I will just say this if I wait to partake of communion til I have 100% assurance of my salvation and that I have forgiven everyone perfectly, I will most likely NEVER take it. And of course, that's an option. However, I also believe that JESUS wants me to take communion however imperfect I may see myself. So I do. I really think the struggle with this is OCD driven.

Thank you again Kay Kay. I believe you have very sound advice. I just noticed that you live in Plano, TX! Our pastor is there right now receiving holistic treatment for cancer. I remember the name of your city because he said to just recall "Plain o' Texas." :)

Thank you so much again!
