Any Bob Dylan fans at these forums? I personally believe that he is one of, if not the greatest, musicians of all time. :amen:

Also, did you know he released a trio of Christian albums? Slow Train Coming, Saved, and Shot of Love. Slow Train Coming is the best (and most consistent) of the three, and Saved has a few good songs on it, but Shot of Love is pretty hard to sit through.

As for his 'secular' albums, I'd have to say Blonde On Blonde is my all-time favorite (it also might be my all-time favorite for any artist), but Bringing It All Back Home, Blood On the Tracks, and Highway 61 Revisited are all close behind.

Dylan seems to have something for everyone, and I'd really recommend it - he's dabbled in a lot of different genres. So, anyone else out there a fan?

Bob Dylan is a native of Minnesota and he is beloved here. But it is in NYC where he has the largest and most loyal following. I am a huge fan of his having been introduced to his great work by the late Murray the K who may have been the greatest DJ of all time.

Bob Dylan is legend. I'm a fan, but I just have a greatest hits compilation of his and that's all. (for now)

Mister Tamborine Man and Subterranean Homesick Blues are a couple songs of his that I really like.

He is my favorite artist (well he and Arcade Fire)
HW61 Rev is my favorite album of any artist. I've probably listened to it over 300 time. By the way,I here a lot of things in Desolation Row that relate to the holocaust. Two such verses are "across the street". I believe he is clearly referring to Jews that continued to keep the Feast of Passover. They nailed the curtains is simply his way of saying that they had to be very careful that the candle was not seen by anyone outside. And "in a perfect image of a priest",the male head of the home wore the pure white robe during Passover,as was also worn by the high priest in the temple/tabernacle.
"the Titanic sails at dawn I believe refers to the ship full of Jewish refugees who thought the were escaping the death camps. But Cuba, the US and Canada turned them away. Ezra pound and T S Eliot fighting in the capton's tower I believe is the capton of the ship,a German officer, struggling with his conscience. He grew more and more sympathetic for his passengers every day. One account I read stated that he considered running the ship aground so the Jews could be spared being sent back to Europe and the death camps. He simply wandered around in the Caribbean hoping against hope some country would alow them to port. "Calipso singers... ",well, calipso music originated in that very same area. Sadly the ship had to return to Europe and ,though many were granted asslym several hundred ended up in death camps where many were murdered.
My wife is NOT a Dylan fan,but she defined his music better than anyone else to me "He makes you think" He is,in my opinion, his own genre. A group of one.
Any Arcade Fire fans here?

I'm old enough to have eagerly awaited albums like Blonde on Blonde when they were first released. I would agree that Blonde on Blonde is his greatest album, with Blood On the Tracks and several others right up there. The "Christian" albums for me were nearly unlistenable. I've read a great deal about Dylan and don't recall anything vaguely suggesting a "pact with the devil." His "Christian" albums, IMHO, were just one of his many phases and present kind of a shrill, hardline Christianity that I don't think he ever fully embraced. I recall reading an interview a few years ago where he didn't completely distance himself from the "Christian" albums (didn't suggest they were a joke or a mistake) but was considerably toned down and came across as a "believer of sorts." A legendary icon like Dylan leads SUCH a strange life that is SO far outside the norm that I think you have to cut him a lot slack and just take his music for whatever it means to you. I constantly encounter situations where a line or two of his lyrics will pop into my head.

I heard once that he became involved with a group of ultra-orthodox Jews. Whether or not they were Messianic I was unable to find.

To add to what I wrote in my first post on this thread,I believe Bob was drawing a parallel between the way Jews were treated by Nazis and the ugly way blacks have been treated here in "the land of the free" . His very first verse "They're selling postcards of the hanging..they're painting the passports brown" clearly suggests that possibility. "The hanging" refers to 2 black men hung in the town square(by the way,a mere 20 miles from Bob's hometown) and the Nazis painted Jewish passports brown. I think,in a way he's asking us to look at our own selves. Was not what we whites did to blacks equally appalling? And why did we murder off most native Americans instead of making slaves of them as well. And any serious fan of Dylan knows the he has a very tender heart towards blacks.
