Hoping some atheists can share regarding the below...

- Did you belong to a religion previously?

Yes, I was a Christian before becoming an atheist.

- What was the kicker that basically sent you down the path of investigating atheisms

The lack of evidence I had for my faith. Seeing other Christians routinely humiliated when they tried to prove or share their faith.

- Do you miss theism (if you were into it previously)

Yes, a lot. I loved fire and brimstone Christianity. The faith provided a lot of rough emotions, like fear, angst and sorrow. I became chemically addicted to them, so once I became an atheist, everything feels pretty much dead and gray. Drives me insane just thinking about it. I 2007, I could feel butterflies pretty much all day, but when I lost my faith in 2008, my emotions all pretty much died. It's literally like a 99% lost in emotional feeling.

I have ideas of how to reboot it, but so far.. not much. Depression and feeling like I'm in a hole isn't helping either..

Do I miss God? No, I never looked to him for comfort.

- What do you think people think gods are?

Hmm.. I don't know.. I wonder why they are called super natural beings. If they're real, they are as natural as the rest of us. I like to ask Christians what makes God worthy of worship and intrinsically higher than us, and I usually get no answer.

There are no "atheisms". Atheism is the state of being unconvinced by theistic arguments for god.

In the spirit of the question, though, I had spent a lot of time developing my thoughts and positions trying to harmonize Christianity with reality. I realized eventually that there was no basis for any of the premises, let alone the "harmonizations."

Once I dropped my religion, I saw no reason to adopt any other. I am therefore, an atheist.
- Do you miss theism (if you were into it previously)
No. But, I miss seeing friends on a regular basis.
- What do you think people think gods are?
I don't quite get this question. People who believe in gods believe that those gods are gods.

Yes, I was raised a Catholic. There was no kicker, I had simply asked myself how I knew what I thought that I knew about God. The closest thing to a kicker was the persuasiveness of science.

No, I do not miss theism. I have everything that I need as an atheist.

I think that theists have very individual notions of what gods may be.

Most of my atheist friends have not belonged to a religion previously. Whereas the atheist accuse the religious of raising their children religious, atheist parents are raising their children atheist. I see no problem with raising your children with your religious viewpoint.

Did you belong to a religion previously?

I was a Christian while I was growing up until relatively recently, if that counts.

What was the kicker that basically sent you down the path of investigating atheisms

Education, and reading the Bible in conjunction with actual history books on the same period. I think learning that not everything had to have an immediate answer influenced me a lot as well.

Do you miss theism (if you were into it previously)

Not particularly.

What do you think people think gods are?

Not sure. Human-created fiction, obviously; it wouldn't make sense for me to think they existed and still be an atheist. My pet "theory" (if repeating stuff that actually qualified people have said counts as a theory) is that it's the logical conclusion to reach based on how our brain interprets intention. We look for patterns and purpose in everything - that's how we survived as a species - and it is almost inevitable that this thought process would eventually lead to belief in personifications that give purpose to otherwise unintelligent phenomena. Gods would therefore be these personifications. How exactly this came about, however, I have no idea. We can pinpoint where gods start to appear in human cultural history, but there's currently no evidence to show us why we started.

What I see far more often is atheist parents raising their children to think for themselves, not necessarily to become atheists.

What? Are you insinuating that I was never a Christian, lol?

I am one. But how do I know? The bible says that a person who has faith in the finished work of the cross has become born again and has eternal life. The term Christian means Christlike and there are people who can act like Christ in some ways but not truly be saved or have eternal life. Some countries which have national churches would be in that category because they think they were "born Christians". There's one way to tell, when you were a "Christian" if you had died and God asked you for a reason why he should allow you into heaven, what would your answer be?

That set up is kind of confusing. If the entry conditions are explicitly defined as per the Bible, then why would god even ask?

I was wondering this myself.

It would be rather mean-spirited if he did, but I suspect this is just the proselytizer's ploy to get you to follow the script and say, "because I'm a good person".

No doubt. Perhaps a copy and paste quesion from CARM. When you reply 'because i'm a good person' he will copy and paste the response explaining how you should answer and you will magically believe.

I do. Kind of. Lutheran Christian. I have some sort of soft spot for the church. But I don't believe any of this supernatural stuff.

- What was the kicker that basically sent you down the path of investigating atheisms

Theological noncognitivism. I wanted to know what I was supposed to believe in, etc. But to this very day I am not quite sure, to be honest. And how can I believe in something if I have no clue what?

- Do you miss theism (if you were into it previously)
- What do you think people think gods are?

Hah! :p

ETA: I am becoming more and more convinced that to a lot of people (YMMV) God is a fairly cheap way to "know" things. An illusion of knowledge. For, how can a common Joe Schmoe know how the universe came to be, or some such? It is preposterous. And yet, there are theists that run around as if they knew it all. God is this illusion. (Of course, not to other people)

"If they don't fall for your trick, they are most likely kooks and nuts. Tell them that."

In His Book its salvation by grace with no works. In all other religions/cults is salvation by works or grace plus works. It's an honest question of mewho's previous faith brought forth in deepest sincerity and love, gordho
