Yep the summer hols are here.

HRH asked me this when I told her to clean her room the other day (stalling technique ;))

She basically asked, "If we had the Victorians, Edwardians, the Tudors, what are we called?"

I didn't know but what say ye?

I said I would ask those who know on CF.

If you don't mind a foreigner's opinion. I would suggest that the Monarchical terms are no longer fitting as your country no longer considers their Monarch to be the driving force directing you. An appellation for the current generation that is more in tune with the current driving forces that shape your ideas would be more appropriate. I wouldn't venture to guess what that appellation might be.

The whole naming eras thing stopped at World War 1, and they aren't particularly well organised when they are used. Generally this era of history is referred to as the contemporary era ("modern era" is already taken), so we could use that. Other times in history the current house has been used, so we would be in the Windsor Period. However, the monarchy is far less important than it used to be, so it would be unlikely that naming the era after the ruler would suddenly make a revival.

In all honesty, we don't have a name for this era, because that's for historians to decide in the future. What they'll call us will depend entirely on what defining features this period of time has.

The naughty side of me immediately thought we'd be called, "the Totally *Expletive* Era" (insert chosen expletive between the asterisks) but I'm working on changing that. ;)

You know, you got a good point there. When I get madam to wash my car and she brings this subject up again to avoid the task, I might nick this from you.

My vote goes for - either "Windsors" or the "Neo-Elizabethan period." Probably the latter given how long Queen Elizabeth II has reigned, coupled with how closely tied she is to the national identity. Granted, she is a figure head more than a leader now - but people all over the world still know who she is and associate her with Great Britain. Even the Canadians have her on their money.

I think that she truly has defined her era in that regard, so the Neo-Elizabethan Period sounds good. And she has been more blessed than many of your past monarchs. How many other monarchs have lived to see their own line of succession down to their great grandchildren? Imagine how that must make her feel, to know that she has met the person who will be king many, many years after she has passed on? It seems like a very rare, special gift for any monarch to enjoy.
