A Holy Sacrifice

Jesus was the Holy Sacrifice, and as we spend time together on the walk, I am praying that God will reveal in each of us the wonderful and liberating message of the cross. This study will be divided into three aspects.

1. The Altar

2. The comparison to Jesus.

3. How do we apply it today.

The truth of God’s word is so important it is life to all who apply it. This study is to bring the message of the cross into your daily lives. Never to forget what our Lord and Saviour did for us over 2000 years ago.

As you study this there is so much to apply, so it is well worth spending good quality time here. For it the power of the cross that set us free. (Col 1:20)

The Altar

The altar was made of Acacia wood and overlaid with brass. 5 cubits by 5 cubits and 3 cubits in it’s height. This is the biggest piece of furniture in the Tabernacle. It was the first thing that you saw when you entered into the outer court. It had four horns one on each corner. A grate one and half cubits from the earth. There was also rings and staves made of wood and brass, with a ledge around the outside. There were five utensils that the priest would use; pans, shovels, basins, flesh hooks, and fire pans.

Jesus on the cross

The first thing to read is the accounts of Jesus on the Cross, spend time reading them and put yourself there in front of the cross. Then I believe you will get a lot more out of this study. God’s wants to reveal great and wonderful mysteries into your life.

Part 1 (The Altar)

Exodus 27:1-8

Jesus Christ (The ultimate price)

Jesus paid the ultimate price when He died on the cross. It is because of this that we can have a relationship with God that is intimate and liberating. We have received Grace to be who God intended us to be. There is so much to the message of the cross. But the most wonderful thing that gets revealed is the power of it. It has the authority to set us free from sin and sickness. We can stand victorious in it’s revelation.

Five Cubits Long And Five Cubits Square Three Cubits High

The altar being square shows us that Jesus died for the whole world. John 3:16

The number 5 talks about grace. Jesus’ five wounds at the cross. (hands, feet, and side) The number three represents the three days and the three nights in grave (Matt 12:40).

So as you see God was revealing knowledge about His son even as long ago as Moses. The truth of the matter is that the Bible is one massive revelation about our Lord Jesus.

The Hollow Altar

The reason for the altar being hollow is that this shows the great sacrifice that the Lord took on Himself. He left Heaven with all it’s riches to come down to earth and to empty Himself of everything. To become a human being and to experience what that was like. Humbling Himself and becoming obedient to death. Philippians 2:6-9

How much He must of suffered just for you and me. It moves me to tears each time I think of someone willing to sacrifice so much for me.

The Horns & The Grate network

The horns represent the power of the blood. It is a place of strength It has in it the authority that Jesus has to set the whole world free. That is why there is one in each corner (the four corners of the earth). Exodus 29:12

Luke 1:68-69

“Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited and redeemed His people, And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of His servant David,

The grate network represents the plan of man to capture Jesus. All the scheming and planning that went into getting Jesus crucified. But what they did not realize was that they were fulfilling prophecy.

Then there were four rings attached to the network. This shows that the plans of man to kill off Jesus failed. For by the very means that they killed Him, was the very means that God used to send the message of the cross for salvation. The rings represent the faith of the believer in the promise of salvation and freedom. The staves represent the proclamation of the Gospel. (Matt 28:18-20 Mark 16:15)

Romans 1:17

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

Application for Us

What does this all mean to us, well if we take the message of the cross and apply it to our daily living. It has the power and the authority to minister to those around us. It shows us that we have been separated from our old nature for it has been crucified.

Romans 6:6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. So lets live the life that brings freedom and salvation. Not only for us but for all those that we know.



The Five Aspects of Christ’s Sacrifice (using the five keys)

Isaiah 43:10

My people, you are my witnesses and my chosen servant. I want you to know me, to trust me, and understand that I alone am God. I have always been God; there can be no others.



The altar was the main sight as you walked into the outer court. The priests would accept or decline your offering there. It was the place for the forgiveness of sins. There the priests would use the utensils that God commanded to be made. At the point in the study we have looked at the meaning of the altar itself. And it is good to know about it, but it is more important to apply what we know to a hurting world. Who have no knowledge of Jesus. Just think of the wonderful opportunities that are in front of you. The Five implements that we are looking at in this part of the study are here to assist you in your witness.

Key one (The Pan)

The pan was used to remove the ashes form the altar. There is a fire at the alter and this reminds us of the sacrifice of Jesus and the tremendous pain that He went through.

Psalm 18:7,8,12 Then the earth shook and trembled; The foundations of the hills also quaked and were shaken, Because He was angry. Smoke went up from His nostrils, And devouring fire from His mouth; Coals were kindled by it. From the brightness before Him, His thick clouds passed with hailstones and coals of fire.

It was the wrath of God, The smoke the fire and the burning coals. Jesus our saviour passed through this for you and me. So it is our job to let the world know what He did for all of us. (Key No 1)



Key Two (The Shovels)



The shovels were used to remove the ashes and to put them in the pans. This is to show us that the sin is removed forever never to be appear again. It is for us to show people that when God forgives it is forgotten.. (Key No.2)

Key Three (The Basins)

Theses were to catch the blood, they are to remind us of the precious blood of Jesus. It is for us to share this message. As it of utmost importance to all who are saved. By knowing about the blood and what authority it has we learn of the protection that the Lord gives us. Applying the blood to our lives gives us piece of mind and security. It needs to be applied continually. It is what cleanses our whole life. (Key No.3)

Key Four (The Fleshhooks)

These were stuck into the flesh, to move it. This speaks of suffering. Jesus suffered so much by being nailed to the cross. Each nail that was applied brought about unbearable pain and suffering. The message of the cross can not be neglected for it is of utmost importance to all that we believe. So to share about the suffering brings people to the realisation that Jesus was willing to pay the ultimate price, for them. (Key No.4)

Key Five (The Fire pans)

These pans were used to carry the fire to other parts of the outer court, so that it might be used for others. It talks of the Holy Spirit. The believer in faith guided by the Holy Spirit to help others. Applying the benefits of the sacrifice to the heart of believers. Key No.5)
