I guess it fills the relics gap for protestants.

I know of at least one graveyard in the Czech rep. (from time of Black Death) which has soil from the holy land sprinkled upon.

It's true, I think it's ironic that Protestants will get all in a huff about icons, incense, and other tangible elements of the Christian faith, but when it comes to ancient Israel, all of that goes right out the window and they'll bend over backwards to incorporate certain elements of ancient Judaism (I've seen Christians with Jewish tallit with the tzitzit on the ends). That and they also go out of their way to make pilgrimages to Israel, yet if someone wants to make a pilgrimage to Mt. Athos or the Vatican or something of that nature it's idolatry.

Protestantism is just full of contradictions in my mind.

The thing that I'm sick of is, "are you a friend of Izzz-ruhl or not!?" That whole Israel connected to the apocalypse Protestant thing drives me absolutely nutsoid. Some of these weirdos are so into Judaism that, frankly, I just don't see why they don't forget Jesus and go to the Synagogue and join up? Most Americans don't know much about the history of Israel and Palestine, and just fall for that "ru a friend of Izzruhl?" talking point lock, stock, and barrel every time.

I wouldn't mind souvenirs of kosher dead sea salt and a bar of sulphur soap, but dirt and leaves I can do without.
When I was at the Ben Gurion airport before my departure back, I picked up an oil perfume that just says Pure Line Flower Oil Perfume. The most amazing, delicate scent I ever owned. And I have not been able to find it online or anywhere else since I got back. I also brought back a headscarf of the softest, most delicate texture. Ah, the Middle East.

This is me in the Gethsemane Garden.

Interesting you bring that up, that's the topic of my persuasive speech. Discussing the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict and advocating a two-state solution. It's been a bear to research, but it's been interesting nonetheless.

I agree, I'm absolutely sick of Zionism and personally wish it was outlawed. The way that Zionism influences our foreign policy sometimes is despicable.

Care to elaborate, Mariya? BTW, lovely picture of you on this thread. You're very beautiful. Lovely pic.

Thanxxx!

We already had the conversation some time ago, and you personally said "I'm pro Israel the nation!" Israel is beautiful and I have relatives there and I want it to be safe and prosperous. (But those ultra-Orthodox need to start contributing, with which all my relatives strongly agree.)

When I went to Israel, I noticed the same thing.
Nearly everywhere you could buy bottles of Olive Oil, Jordan Water, Incense and Soil. I bought two sets at a Christian store that specialized in Olive wood carvings. (They came with a Crucifix and a printed icon, which can be described with no other word than 'psychedelic'.

We were blessed with a Catholic tour guide who pointed out which places were owned by Christian Families. We made a special point to visit them because of Muslim and Jewish (And even sometimes Christian) competitors selling cheap 'Christian' tschotskes were hurting the Christians who sold quality souvenirs. Many times we were approched by Muslims selling rosaries. (Which were cheap and more often than not made with the wrong number of beads.) They would not take 'no' for an answer. Luckily, our tour guide would not take 'yes' for an answer. When we were outside the Church of the Nativity, we were delayed for five or so minutes while he yelled at the one of the more aggressive peddlers in Arabic.

Mariya, perhaps I should clarify? I am not against Israel, in fact I was raised within a denomination that was very much for Israel. Recently as I've engaged here in TAW and explored more research it's become pretty clear to me that the Israeli government is just as complicit as Palestine when it comes to crimes and human rights violations, but I think sadly that because the U.S. has typically favored Israel they don't see repercussions the same way that some Arab states would if the same charges were leveled against them.

I support a two-state solution, I support peace in the Middle East. I believe there are some who consider themselves "zionists" but take a much more holistic approach to the political issues and desire peace in the Middle East as well and I would align with them. My issue, my disdain, for zionism arises from the more fundamentalist extremist evangelicals (think John Hagee, Hal Lindsey, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Chuck Missler, etc) who essentially view Palestinian/Muslim rights as subordinate to those of the Jews, and even look at the Jews themselves as pawns in their eschatological schemes, it really dehumanizes both groups. In fact, some evangelical communities even "adopt" and fund illegal Jewish settlements in the Palestinian occupied territories, all because they think it will accelerate their understanding of the end of the world.

As Christians I think we have just as much of an obligation to stand for justice for the Palestinians as we do justice for the Israelis, we have Christian brethren on both sides of the barrier.

I apologize, my initial statement in my prior post was a bit daft and a sweeping generalization. I hope this presents my position a bit more rationally.

Oh and I agree with gurney, that picture is beautiful. The Middle East does indeed produce some fine products, especially with textiles.

Nice photo Mariya. Do you mean this perfume was oil based? Usually I think of perfume as alcohol based but I guess the scent is some sort of essential oil?

I guess we may have to start a thread about which places carry the authentic goods and not the touristy cheap knock offs of the holy land thread.
