I am guilty of it this but really hate it. We all quote from the bible without really explaining what it means in real life. When I first started going to church it was like everyone spoke in coded language. Talking about binding the devil, putting on the armour, having a relationship with Jesus but not saying how it works in everyday life. Jesus spoke in parables but he explained everything to the disciples. The most important lessons I've learnt have been through years of searching, struggling, suffering on my own. I think these 'wilderness' periods (yes, another cliché) are so important. But its good to learn from others, to learn from their real life experiences without the clichés and formulas. The spiritual talk we speak often just causes confusion and feelings of inadequacy because the listener does not understand and feels they've failed somehow.

I like to hear people's thoughts on this, your experiences and lessons you have learned?

When I was a new Christian catch phrases like "doing God's will'' and ''God said this to me" frustrated me a lot. How would a person know for sure it was one way or the other?

It used to make me feel very inadequate when I heard things like that because I thought I was the only one that didn't hear from God. But after years of struggling I've decided if its not in the bible and its moral then God actually doesn't mind what I do. If he wants me to go a certain way, he has to make things go obviously wrong so I know to change direction. Sounds very clumsy and not the 'relationship' I would hope but it seems to be working. It helps being married because in making big decisions I pray that God will guide my husband, then after we've discussed the matter I let him make the final decision ;) Its a bit of a cop out for me as I hate making decisions, but hey its biblical! I make a huge mistake years ago and talked my husband into something and it was one big disaster, so I learnt my lesson.

Do not be so open-minded that your brain falls out

I started going to a Pentecostal church in February of 2007, and it was like going to a foreign country.

Pleading the blood
Givin' God a handclap of praise
Rebuking demons
Don't say you're sick - don't "claim that."
prayer cloths
anointing oil
Layin' it on the altar
Having elders come up and pray for people
Prayer warriors
Intercessors - WOW!

In my independent church that I went to as a kid, none of these things meant anything. Now that I've been going a while, and took seminary classes, it makes sense. But every once in a while, one of the old timers will say something and I'll have to go, "Huh?"

Yes its helpful to explain things, i use to get frustrated when people would just post a scripture, especially before the Lord taught me how to not become easily offended, my mind was paranoid. But i do prefer to just post scripture on the internet, i figure Gods the best teacher. And folks don't seem to understand what im saying anyway. I just love scripture. :)

I wouldn't call them cliche's but most of my sayings come from the bible, verses i use often are:

all things work for good to those who love God

put on the whole armor of God

Love your neighbor as yourself, all law hangs on love

flee covetousness, immorality

Resist the devil and he will flee

pray for every good thing with thanksgiving, be careful for nothing

casting down imaginations and and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ

And my new favorite is: For we have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

When i experience fear i do just that, i.e. cry to the father and wait on Him. Which reminds me of another one...

Wait on the Lord and he shall strengthen your heart, wait i say on the Lord.

Php 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Php 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Php 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Php 4:9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
