Especially in his early childhood, did Jesus know he was the Son of God?

I think it is safe to say, yes. Being that Jesus Christ is God, and that many things that he would have seen in his childhood (due to circumstances, living conditions and environment) was used in his teachings (he retained that information and used them all for lessons) without a doubt in my mind, he knew. If you have amazon prime look up the film Who was Jesus? and it is very enlightening.

According to the gospel of Luke, Jesus positively identified the fact by the age of twelve. He would have gathered that from scripture at some earlier age, but he would not have had access to the scribes in the temple until then.

At 1 year old? Probably not. If we're not careful, we can get a picture of Jesus like some of the apocryphal gospels.

We're not given any picture of him as a child. The earliest story is age 12, which certainly shows some understanding. Jesus' baptism looks to me like a new consciousness of his role. I think the safest assumption is that his understanding grew over time. I think Luke 2:40 implies that.

Are we not differentiating human capacity with God's capacity? Also, this isn't so great of a thing to spend time pondering about when we have things like salvation on the line. I'm personally more concerned with being right in the eyes of God, and find little time for anything else but the pondering of my own character.

Matthew 7
"[sup]13[/sup] Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: [sup]14[/sup] Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."

The Bible does not say. The earliest we are told is when he was a young boy and he taught in the temple and amazed the the leadership there.

If I had a vote, I would say He did know as early as His understanding would allow. But all anyone can do is suppose.

I don't know but here is my thought

He is God, so He knew. He chose to take on human form and live as a human lives so even though He knew He probably did not act on this information by using His powers as a child (although He was wise beyond His years)

Interesting question.

I'll share my reasons from scripture why I believe it was a process of knowing. From Luke 2:41-52, Jesus was in the Temple talking to the religious leaders and he was 12 years old. In verse 52, it says,

Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.

GREW means it was a process, and when you look at Philippians 2:6 it says

Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminals's death on a cross.

This could imply that at the incarnation he laid aside some of the authority and Godhead power and attributes in order to humble himself in obedience to God.

He did this to be fully man (to identify with us) and be fully God too. He didn't become "not" God, but chose not to abuse his power and knowledge and I believe he experienced childhood like any other kid, and when he was 12 years old, in the Temple, he was growing in wisdom and stature in the sight of God and people.

I find it so fascinating. When I die I hope God can tell me about the experience of being human from his perspective. Of course thats one of hundreds of questions lol.

It's probably like a human volunteering to have his consciousness tranferred into the body of a slug. Jesus sure loves us.

I don't know, it could be quite interesting, haven't you ever wondered what your Dogs perspective was? Or a cat, cats are out there.

The difference between a human and the being described by Colossians 1:15 is much farther removed than the difference between a human and a dog.

The pre-incarnate Son strode galaxies like stepping stones and could play jax with stars. That such a being who could allow Himself to be confined to a flimsy body that tired after walking only a few miles says so much about the love of Christ.

And no, I don't think it would be that interesting to live my dog's life, either. Look at what happened when the intellect of demons was confined to a herd of pigs...and pigs are arguably smarter than dogs.

Someone needs to step off the pedestal, thanks for explaining the obvious difference.

As for your comment regarding the pigs, you may open your mind and try on some curiosity of course the way you're talking thats probably not one of your gifts. (creativity that is)
