• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I've been getting this fear that if I don't read the Bible 24/7, I am not putting God first.

Everytime I'm doing schoolwork or reading a (different) book, a voice tells me "Obviously you do not like God, as you are doing homework instead of reading the Bible."

Because of this, I can hardly concentrate and most of my grades have dropped by a letter grade.

Hi,

This sounds very difficult. Does your college have a counselor that students may consult with? If not, there are plenty of counselors or therapists that can help you with OCD. Of course, your ability to pay would be a factor.

God bless you and I'm praying for you.

Faithfully,
CH Sacerdote

Hey Steam, this is obviously your OCD at work, because in the bible it says work is holy, and homework is also holy because u are taking advantage of the gifts that the Holy Spirit gave u in doing your school work.

Try not to argue with the thoughts but at the same don't ignore them.
Recognize that the thoughts are there but they aren't who u Truely are, they are from the OCD.
God will always love u my friend :)

You think that the only way you can serve God is through reading the bible, but that is not true. You are serving God when you do your homework; he has blessed you with an education, well then study for him. Do your work for him. When you are out with your family enjoy yourself and praise him for this blessing. You are not only a christian when you read your bible or when you do certain obvious christian things like reading the bible. A janitor who mops floors, well that can be done for God, he is serving God with what he has been given. A store manager who is a christian, well she had to fold t-shirts to put on a shelf, and she can fold those t-shirts in praise to God, because she is not serving man, but God, and she is praising him through this. You are serving God when you enjoy his blessings, when you do your homework, when you open the door for a stranger who has their hands full of groceries. Reading your bible is not for God, God knows everything, the bible is for you, to help you.
And sure you read your bible because God says so and you want to learn more about God, but God does not want you to neglect your school work, or the other blessings He has placed in your life. What ever you do just say, "God I thank you for this blessing, help me enjoy it and rest in you, and help me to serve you, Lord."
Doing your homework, do that for God. Cleaning your room, do it for God. Babysitting, do it for God. You can praise God with joy and happiness throughout your week in different areas.
Sure, set aside a time for devotions, but just remember you can serve God with other area's of your life. Put your mind at rest. God loves you.

Well said sweethings!

Also, I recall one of Paul's epistles addressing one church that was literally abandoning their everyday tasks to sit on hills and wait for Jesus to come back. Paul had to tell them to go back to their daily lives and not neglect their responsibilities. I can't remember what book his was in, but I could probably find it if you want me to.

It says in 1 Corinthians 10:31: "So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."

In this verse, when it says "whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do", it implies that God is giving permission to do other things than study His Word in a day. If God didn't want you to eat or drink, or do other things, "God wouldn't of said "eat, drink, or whatever" in His Word (Bible). However, everything you do do, do in "for God's glory."

Eating and drinking and doing school work are essential to life functioning. God knows that. To be used by God for His purpose for your life, you need to have education and training in how to do this. Preachers go to school in preparation to be well-educated enough so they can have basic knowledge, etc. in order to preach and be used by God. Your school studies follow the same principle - you need to be well-educated in your school classes, in order for God can use for His glory.

Yes, it is crucial for you to study God's Word alot, alot, and alot, but there must also be balance for you to be able to eat, drink, and study your school studies as well.

Hope that helps my friend. I know it is real hard. I have scrupulosity also.

I used to have blasphemous thoughts all day, but I don't have them anymore. There is a solution.

The reason the thoughts seemed so powerful to me was because satan lead me to believe that God is cruel and angry, and He will punish me for every thought, even the ones I don't want.

Your view of God, and yourself must change. He loved you so much that He died for you. He is merciful and loving. He cares for you. You have to remember that you are His treasure.

Don't try to control your thoughts, instead...

Surrender your thoughts to God. Tell Him you don't want any of these thoughts and ask Him to bring every thought captive unto Him. I ask Him to let the Holy Spirit guard your thoughts. Surrender your mind, thoughts and OCD into His hands, ask Him to do with your thoughts what He will. If you have bad thoughts again, you know that God has heard your prayer, and He knows that you don't want these thoughts.

You see, I thought my thoughts were great and powerful, and in my confused mind, I thought God's knowledge was small. In my mind I was degrading His power by worrying over these thoughts. (But of course no thoughts can actually degrade God's power, this was only the idea I had in my mind)
I'd thought that God didn't know that I didn't want these blasphemous thoughts. I assumed He would think that I have turned my back on Him.
But I was wrong. God is great, He knows all, and He new that I didn't want my OCD thoughts.

God is all powerful, and He loves us:

If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 1John 3:20

You need to ignore your thoughts, keep reading the bible despite what your thoughts say. You could also try listening to an audio bible if reading it is too hard.

Rebuke satan out loud by the power of Christ, and rest your mind in Christ's love.

P.S. Do you do any rituals to combat your thoughts?

Thats the enemy making you feel that way. You read the bible because your thirsty not because you feel you have too. The bible is Gods love story to us. Dont listen to enemy lies. God knows your heart. God is love. Hes doesnt threaten his children. God Bless and pray about it. Cast all your cares on Jesus he wants you to know you can do that. Nothing is ever to little or big.
