There's no way to know how many Christians don't have TV's.

If you don't feel the need to keep yours anymore, by all means, get rid of it.

I cancelled my cable over a year ago, but kept the TV because I love movies and some TV shows, so I just buy them online now. But not having to watch commercials and all the propaganda... is so refreshing and liberating! You seriously don't know how much "stuff" gets into your brain - or your kids' brains - until you turn the TV off for a while, and suddenly you remember what it's like to think for yourself again. I highly recommend it :)

We haven't had cable TV in over 4 years (this April)
-- nothing wrong with TV and or cable, it's whether
or not you use it appropriately...Also, if the Lord is
leading you to get rid of Cable TV or your internet connection.

We got rid of Cable TV because there was nothing on worth watching,
where we live in Canada, they reshuffled the cable programming tiers
so you would be having to have ungodly programming, just so you could
have the Christian networks in the same tier.
Not only that but the cost was always going up...and it wasn't worth it
to pay well over a hundred bucks a month for the handful of shows
that we actually watched.

We can watch Christian programming via internet, our TV is HD and we
have blu-ray for watching movies.

I know people who don't have a TV; however, TV wasn't there problem
it's what they choose to do with their time...I tried to tell them that
but they had to find out for themselves.

We went to a certain Christian "refuge" in NC and the hotel rooms don't
have TV's in them and the funny thing is, we didn't miss it! Our reason
for going there was for time to concentrate on God and His Word...
it was a wonderful!

I usually use my TV to get my geek on, watching documentaries or educational shows. Heck, last night I was watching a show about the first scientists to ever see a giant squid in the ocean with their own eyes... made me all tingly inside :D

Zener I find it highly disturbing that you even know of the existence of that show. Whao, why would you do that, to your eyes and your brain.

In answer to tgussy, I'd say go with how you feel. Most peeps in here will have a tv, so they'll be unwilling to give you advice to get rid of yours. I have one and watch it, but I'm not beyond concluding that maybe this is the right path for you. Perhaps the Holy Spirit feels this has become a distraction and an idol and feels this is the best way to rid yourself of the whole thing.

If you feel you can control yourself, best advice is to go with what the guys have suggested above. But have a think about it.

On the other hand Zener you should definitely take yours to the nearest trash site. Then go find a surgeon get him to to crack open your skull and take a power hose to your brain.

Over 10 years ago I felt told by Abba, "No t.v." and "T.V. is being used to harden the hearts of Americans." I gave it up and have not missed it. When the new technology came out I did not get a new t.v., but continued to use my old one, as before, for CDs and VCR only. People are being programmed by the "programs" to think evil is cute, normal and even good. "Be careful when you think you stand lest you fall..."

We are told to "Come out of Babylon lest you partake her in plagues."

There is no "by the Book" answer to a query such as this.

Is your television causing you to sin, taking you further and further away from God? If the answer to that is "yes", then yeah, get rid of it. As with ANYTHING in your life doing just that.

But what is sin to you might not be sin to another. It's all very personal. We all have the Holy Spirit, and we need to listen to what that Spirit tells us, and act upon it. But pray about it. A lot of people think they are being convicted simply because someone filled their head with an idea, and your imagination took that and ran with it.

Just pray and ask God what to do.

I also came to a point that I felt tv was taking me away from God and that I wanted to get rid of it. If I watched tv in the evening I was often too tired to read the bible and to pray afterwards. Also I was still very excited about the movie I've watched so I wind up surfing the internet reading reviews.
Now I still have my tv. I just try not to watch tv that often anymore, I reduce it with 1 or 2 movies a week. It's still difficult sometimes, but I know there is an on/off button that I could press.

People have said a lot of things to me online that weren't really insightful, but this really takes the cake. I know you mean well, however. So +1 for having a good heart.

I stopped watching Tv mostly before I was a Christian. I lived in a house in a townhouse condo complex and they had restrictions on having a satellite dish attached to the house. So my sister and I decided to just forget Tv while we lived there. My addiction to it was broken then. When we moved to this apartment, we thought we wanted Tv again but we generally found it really boring and we were paying lots of money for basically nothing: so we got rid of it again.

So I had absolutely no problem not watching Tv when I became a Christian. There are other reasons I don't watch it; it turns your brain to mush, advertisements irritate me beyond description, most Tv shows are boring at best. But it does make my place more peaceful and I am generally tons more productive than I would be if I were still addicted to staring at that dummy box.

It's up to you whether or not you want to keep your tv. You shouldn't base your decision on whether or not anyone else has one though.

I agree with LilLamb on this one.

My recommendation would be to take a break for a week or two, but don't get rid of the TV right away. People who impulsively quit secular hobbies "cold turkey" are often haunted by guilt and self-condemnation when they want it back... often when it wasn't sinful in the first place if enjoyed with moderation.

i am wondering if I should keep my t.v or donate it. I am at the point of thinking I should donate the t.v and not have a t.v. i Think that the t.v may be taking me away from God.
Thanks for your help.

The problem is really self-control. Even if you get rid of everything that could distract you from God, you will still have the self-control problem. It might be better to keep the TV and practice self-control by not using it. Jesus did say if something causes you to sin, get radical about, so by all means donate it if it is that big a problem. Pray and let the Lord guide you in this. Above all, pray for self-control (surrender the problem to Him and ask Him to change and empower you). I don't watch any television but there is a TV in my house which once in a blue moon I will use to play a movie or video game on.

Its not a sin to watch tv nor should anyone get rid of it. I mean if you want to be sin free you literally have to live in a cave by yourself to get away from any outside influence. Even then sin would still find you.

This doesn't mean tv isn't bad. TV in america has some massive issues. But as long as you control it and it doesn't control you then its ok to have. Granted most of what we watch probably wouldn't be acceptable by God. I've gotten away from tv for the most part. I watch shows like Shark Tank, Revolution. I also watch shows like Dexter and Hannibal. Mainly I always wanted to by a profiler helping in crimes. So its interesting to see how these characters interact with their world. I don't watch them for the blood, swearing...etc. Granted I wish it wasn't in them.

Another show I watch is Game of Thrones. Love the story, but I feel I might have to stop watching it soon. I get tired of nudity every other week and some pretty vulgar words that really don't need to be in it.

Thanks Guys for all the replies I decided to keep the Tv and get rid of cable.
Yeah we got rid of cable. Cable is far more filthy then what you can get in through your antenna.

From what I've learned about tv, I don't believe it is really about sin (well, maybe a bit; sometimes we'd rather spend time doing what we want rather than being productive, serving others, or spending time in prayer or reading scripture). But it's more of an issue of addiction, manipulation and what it does to our minds. When you stop watching it at all, for a large amount of time, you really were how bizzarre it is to watch tv.

I remember one year at Christmas going to my brother's friends' place for dinner. After dinner "we" decided to watch some tv shows. I can still remember thinking how weird it felt to be sitting there, collectively, staring at a box and not talking to each other.
If we really take the time to learn how television is used now, I think most people would be disgusted.
It just becomes common place in our lives. I'll be honest, as a teenager I watched tv all day everyday, except for the time that I absolutely was forced to do something else; school, church, my paper route, practice piano. But I watched tv probably 8 hours a day, most of the time. It was an addiction for sure. It made me STUPID.

I gave mine away 5 years ago.. I don't miss it at all. I have grown closer to the Lord over that time..
I notice that when i visit friends they are glued to the television even while we visit.. I have since reduced those visits to special occasions only.
I do use my internet for reading the news. But, i only have a smartphone now. I used to have 2 laptop that i no longer miss.
When i desire a show to watch. I go wat h an old classic pn youtube, using my phone. Or i watch something like charles Stanley, or another minister i enjoy..
My life is enhanced by not havi g a television..
