• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Anything could become an obsession. We could become afraid of anything. And just about any thought or action could become a repetitive compulsion. Anything healthy or unhealthy, good or bad, could become an OCD form.

But some are more common than others. Some are more unusual or tricky or harder to see.

I was wondering if you'd be willing to share obsessions, fears, and compulsions you have seen, experienced, or know of.

It is my battle too. But I find the hardest OCDs to deal with are the ones I think only I have or the ones I never even see. I think this list could help me identify OCDs I don't see, help me not feel alone, and maybe help someone else too.

Thanks,
RB

Some fears:

Hell
Diseases
AIDS
Killing someone
Sinning
Being rejected by God
Hurting someone on accident
Germs

Etc.

Related verses:

Fear of Hell - "Therefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Spirit." 1 Corinthians 12:3

Fear of being rejected by God - "All that the Father gives me shall come to me; and him that comes to me I will in no wise cast out." John 6:37

Fear of diseases, AIDS, germs - "they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall in no wise hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Mark 16:18

Fear of sinning - "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:" 1 John 2:1

All others - "For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." 2 Timothy 1:7

God Bless :)

My last "great" obsession dealt with a particular person. He once told me, "We'll talk later." Ok, so my first question was "when's later?" He never replied. And I don't like being left hanging like that. So I started obsession on that and finally got a rude reaction from him. There were a couple of other people who I talked with about this. Lucky for me, one was supportive in a nice way, he would occasionally let me rant, but then would change the subject. For me, being able to change the subject is hard. So, that's what I strive for when I realize I'm getting obsessive about something. Only, it isn't always easy.

My OCD takes three forms.

The first, and most troubling to me, is fear of hurting those I love. When I'm suffering from it (as I am right now) I'm afraid that I'll lose control and snap and hurt my mother, my sister, her kids, my brother-in-law, my mom's dog, etc. My compulsion of course is to tell myself I'd never do that and to pray silently and such, wrench my stomach, pushing on my forehead, and if it gets really bad I even hit myself in my head (not hard, just enough so the pain distracts me.)

The second, and still quite troubling to me, is religious OCD. Fear of losing salvation, fear that I was never saved in the first place, etc.

The third is health related. Most recently I've been obsessing over heart issues, but in the past I've also been convinced I had anthrax (about a month or so after 9/11 I ordered a product from Taiwan and immediately after opening the package I got a really bad cold), cancer, hantavirus (I had a really bad cold 4 weeks after cleaning out a very dirty mouse infested garage,) etc.

I used to suffer from #1 and #2 all the time, and didn't have any issues with #3 until 9/11. However, over the past few years what normally happens to me is I have some sort of physical issue (illness, odd pain, etc) which causes #3, then after I start to feel better physically my OCD morphs into #1 or #2 (or most often both at the same time) for a few weeks afterwards.
