Satellite evidence indicates the regime is bluffing hard or really reviving its nuclear program as the White House focuses on Iraq.

By SONNI EFRON, Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON -- Mounting evidence that North Korea is forging ahead with an effort to set up a nuclear assembly line suggests that the regime in Pyongyang may be determined to trigger a crisis on the Korean peninsula just as the Bush administration is most preoccupied with Iraq, analysts warned Saturday.

so what do you think ? is N. Korea bluffing ?

The US sparked the crisis with dubya's sabre rattling calling Korea part of the 'Axis of Evil'. Korea is merely trying to defedn tiself against open American aggression and militarism. They are set next for invasion...or maybe in not next, soon after the US invades Iran.

Calling a country names is not 'sabre' rattling. They need to be condemned for their actions.

This is the fault of their leader, who is a total nutcase.

leave n. korea alone. don't get into a mess like you did several years back....with that other war.

You mean the Korean War when we saved millions of people after a North Korean invasion? ;)

Yea, that was such a bad idea. We should have just let North Korea roll over South Korea... that would have been a MUCH better idea. Yep... we should have just left North Korea alone. Clearly these are just a bunch of great guys!

Funny you have your title has "leave North Korea alone", the US is leaving them alone.

They are the one ****ing with the US, they are the ones trying to make a crisis situation. They are the ones starving their own people while we send them tons and tons of food aid. What kind of twisted person puts this on the US?

Their leader is a mental-case and a megalomaniac.

I agree with Stray Bullet. The North Koreans are making this situation for critical. THEY are the ones who decided to break the treaty they had with us about their nuclear program. We offered them money, food and help setting up a safe and reliable energy program, and what do they do, the N. Koreans just kept on with their nuclear program totally ignoring the international community. Kim Chong-iL is a complete nutcase and is pushing N. Korea to the brink.

Heres some info on N. Korea from the world fact book:

Background:
Following World War II, Korea was split with the northern half coming under Communist domination and the southern portion becoming Western oriented. KIM Chong-il has ruled North Korea since his father and the country's founder, president KIM Il-song, died in 1994. After decades of mismanagement, the North relies heavily on international food aid to feed its population, while continuing to expend resources to maintain an army of about 1 million. North Korea's long-range missile development and research into nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and massive conventional armed forces are of major concern to the international community.

Religions:
traditionally Buddhist and Confucianist, some Christian and syncretic Chondogyo (Religion of the Heavenly Way)

Economy - overview:
North Korea, one of the world's most centrally planned and isolated economies, faces desperate economic conditions. Industrial capital stock is nearly beyond repair as a result of years of underinvestment and spare parts shortages. Industrial and power output have declined in parallel. Despite a good harvest in 2001, the nation faces its eighth year of food shortages because of a lack of arable land; collective farming; weather-related problems, including major drought in 2000; and chronic shortages of fertilizer and fuel. Massive international food aid deliveries have allowed the regime to escape mass starvation since 1995-96, but the population remains vulnerable to prolonged malnutrition and deteriorating living conditions. Large-scale military spending eats up resources needed for investment and civilian consumption. In 2001, the regime placed emphasis on earning hard currency, developing information technology, addressing power shortages, and attracting foreign aid, but in no way at the expense of relinquishing central control over key national assets or undergoing widespread market-oriented reforms.

Gosh they sure do sound like great leaders now don't they!!

note: autonomous religious activities now almost nonexistent; government-sponsored religious groups exist to provide illusion of religious freedom
