Steubenville High School football players found guilty of raping 16-year-old girl

Y! SPORTS
Inside a small Steubenville, Ohio, courtroom filled with sobbing and exhausting emotion, Judge Thomas Lipps found Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond guilty Sunday of raping an intoxicated 16-year-old girl. Lipps sentenced both defendants to a minimum of one year in a youth correctional institute with the determination for a longer sentence coming from child-service experts.
Mays received an additional year for transmission of nude photos, to be served after his rape sentence is completed. Mays and Richmond also will have to register as sex offenders for the rest of their lives.
"It provides a great incentive to do well," said Lipps, who could have ordered Mays and Richmond to remain behind bars until they turned 21.
Mays, 17, and Richmond, 16, both wept, at times uncontrollably, as the verdict was announced. Mays buried his head in a handkerchief as defense attorneys rubbed his back. He later hugged his parents goodbye.

Good. Now maybe the next bunch of idiot dudebros who come across a drunk chick and view her as an opportunity instead of a human being with a right to bodily integrity will remember this and think twice before they lay a hand on her.

Can't wait for the victim blaming brigade to show up, though, and further reinforce to all the predators reading along that if she's drunk, showing a bit of skin, or out alone after dark you can totally get away with assaulting her because everyone will put the heat that should be on you on her instead!

Edit: Never fear, CNN is here to white knight for the poor rapists who saw a drunk girl and just couldn't help but rape her and send photo evidence to multiple people:

That started as soon as the story broke, unfortunately.

Interestingly, they're talking about a grand jury to look into further charges for those complicit in the act. Apparently numerous teens refused to speak with investigators, and of course images and video were passed around a fair amount.

That's one of the interesting parts of this case. How many morons actually bragged about it on social media, thereby implicating themselves as accessories.

Bravo, I hope your lives are destroyed for this if you are found guilty.

Horray!

I feel no sympathy for those . Real men don't rape girls...even drunk ones. Maybe someone should make a little insiprational saying for facebook and pass it around the high school there.

Highest kudos and praise to the girl who charged them and stood her ground against an onslaught of people whose labels would probably get me banned from Christian Forums.

Meh. I read most of the CNN story on the verdict (it was fairly long and I was reading it on my phone), and I didn't get the sense that they were trying play white knight. I read it more as cautionary tale; "Even people who are otherwise exemplary do stupid/evil stuff" and "Do something like this, and you will ruin your life forever, even if you are otherwise a good person". I don't recall anything in that article that made me think that the defendants were treated unfairly or undeserving of their punishment.

Well, so far in this thread your second post/ first response prophecy hasn't come about. Anybody wanna wager how many posts this thread gets before one does?

That said, glad the appropriate people are getting prosecuted, even if the sentence is an ounce of flesh short of what justice would require.

I'm waiting to see the Law And Order episode...and how a murder will be worked in.

SVU does rape cases, and I'm pretty sure they've already done 1 or more about high school football players.

It's because they managed to keep the case in juvenile court. Juveniles have to be adjudged delinquent a year at a time. Chances are good these two will be recommitted and stay in stir until they are twenty one years old.

Amen! These guys got off very lightly. If it were my daughter...

That comment reminds me of somethgni that happened at a fraternity party when I was in college. And even more it reminds me of the people who jump to conclusions when I tell the tale. Guess I'll fully lay hte trap. It was the Jock house, mainly football. One of the girls who was a little sister got really drunk, threw up all over herself and was in no condition ot go anywhere. One v the guys in the house got her undressed and cleaned up and put her in his bed while he slept in his roomates bed (the roommate had left for the weekend).

I've had so many jump to the conclusion that he then raped her. Little could be father from the truth. And for this specific girl she was in the safest place in the world. The term 'Little Sister' sometimes does not fit. It did in this case, anyone who intentionally hurt her would have been at real risk.

I've been in that situation myself (taking care of drunk friends of both sexes), and I'm the last person to assume the worst from circumstances alone...

But if a rape happened (and it's not unusual), it's the guys fault, and they deserve much more than the juvenile "justice" system will give them.

And rape or no rape, friends don't take photos of friends in comprimising situations, then send them out to the immediate world - at least not the friends I know.

Yep. If these guys had been friends of mine, they wouldn't be friends of mine anymore.

What really killed me was the "former friends" of the girl who were mad at her for drinking too much and rolling on the floor. I'm sorry, but when my friends start to make fools of themselves because they've been drinking too much, I get them away from the party, even if they fight me on it. There's also some speculation that she may have been drugged. Folks, having been the victim of someone spiking my drink, I know just how that feels. I had had two maybe three drinks the entire night, but I woke up at my friends house not knowing what happened or how I got there. I remember bits and pieces of the evening, enough to scare the you know what out of me. Ever since then, I do not accept drinks from anyone except the bartender, and that's with me standing right there.

Bravo, I hope your lives are destroyed for this if you are found guilty.

That's a good point. I also can not understand why others have not been charged (the authorities have indicated more charges may ensue) with accessory? There were other boys who witnessed the assualt in the basement. Furthermore, why were there not indictments for child inappropriate contentography handed down against those who produced and published the pictures?

The defense in this case was, paraphrased, 'she didn't actually say no'. So what was the relevance of her drinking habits? Why was this testimony allowed to be introduced? I thought the character of a rape victim was not to be considered by a jury when detemining consent. Perhaps in juvenile proceedings the rules of evidence are relaxed.
