Holder: Obama has "legal right" to kill US citizens with drones on American soil

President Barack Obama has the legal authority to unleash deadly force—such as drone strikes—against Americans on U.S. soil without first putting them on trial, Attorney General Eric Holder wrote in a letter released Tuesday.

Holder, writing to Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, underlined that Obama “has no intention” of targeting his fellow citizens with unmanned aerial vehicles and would do so only if facing “an extraordinary circumstance.”

"The U.S. Attorney General's refusal to rule out the possibility of drone strikes on American citizens and on American soil is more than frightening—it is an affront the Constitutional due process rights of all Americans," the senator said in a statement.

One of the problems with that "extraordinary circumstance" proviso is that "extraordinary circumstances" can be manufactured---and then used to justify all sorts of things.

Does anyone really believe that a regime which feels perfectly comfortable selling automatic weapons to Mexican drug cartels would hesitate to concoct a crisis if it was to the regime's political gain?

Regardless of how you feel about Obama one way or the other, this is just the latest in a long series of things which I find extremely troubling.....and they ought to trouble you, too.

It would be interesting to see if this meets the right to self-defence and effectively grants civilians the right to shoot down drones on sight, on the basis their mission is secretive and the civilian in question is afraid of being mistaken for someone else.
