I had a hobby for years of shortwave listening. Got out of it for several reasons a few years ago. Since then many of the secular broadcasters have closed up their transmitters because it's so much easier to broadcast over the net or a satellite.

I got a nice little portable shortwave for Christmas, which I'm excited about. Nowadays, a lot if not the majority of shortwave broadcasters are evangelical protestant preachers. Not interested...

However, the Vatican does a regular broadcast. I wonder if any of the Orthodox churces do anything like this. I have heard of the ethiopian tewahedo church doing a broadcast which I plan to seek out.

Any Eastern Orthos broadcasting that you guys know of?

I'm an extra class ham radio operator. Haven't heard any Orthodox broadcasts, but then again, I never looked very hard. However, I did work an Orthodox priest in Texas on 20m once. :) I believe Mt. Athos also is on the air once in awhile...

I have a really nice shortwave radio that I picked up over a year ago and still have not taken the time to learn how to use it. Any advice on how to begin?

Put in batteries. or plug into wall. Turn on power. ;)

I have tons of advice! however, a better resource is SWLing.com - a world of shortwave radio reviews, news, articles, how-to guides and innovations

Start there. Really, for me the best thing to remember is simply the 49 meter band after sundown should be full of stations. Night time is by far the better time to listen. If you have a good radio, as it sounds you do, you can try the higher frequencies during the day. Just tune slowly and listen for a signal.
Swling will give you some ideas on where to find stations of interest. keep in mind though, that the stations change frequencies fairly regularly and you will have to hunt a little. But for me that's the fun part, pulling in some weak signal, tuning it in and finding out that you're listening to a news broadcast from the other side of the planet...
Good luck!
