Being born again - baptism and doubts!!!

Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

The first thing that came to my mind after reading your post is you need to be discipled.You need to find a bible teaching church. Build a relationship with the pastor and congregation and work through any doubts or questions you might have. What kind of churches are you familiar with. Maybe we here at CF can give you some church finding guidance.

You do not need to be baptized again and indeed you should not be baptized again. You should, however, return to the Catholic Church which is the only Church that Jesus Christ Himself founded.

I don't think you should be baptised again. Baptism is something that happens ONCE. Must churches would say the same thing.

All Christians have doubts from time to time. Emotions are indeed not a good indicator.

To quote the great writer C.S. Lewis (in his The Screwtape Letters, which are imaginary letters from one demon to another, discussing the temptation of a man they call "the patient"): "Humans are amphibians—half spirit and half animal... As spirits they belong to the eternal world, but as animals they inhabit time. This means that while their spirit can be directed to an eternal object, their bodies, passions, and imaginations are in continual change, for to be in time means to change. Their nearest approach to constancy, therefore, is undulation—the repeated return to a level from which they repeatedly fall back, a series of troughs and peaks. No, you don't need to be baptized to be saved. The thief on the cross was never baptized yet he was told by Christ that he would be with Christ in paradise. Also, the Bible is very explicit about good works or works of righteousness not having any part in salvation. Obviously, baptism is a good work and is therefore excluded from saving anyone. The verses in the Gospel of John that you mentioned may be interpreted in a number of ways but the best ways do not read baptism into what is said. If one simply allows the verses in the passage to speak for themselves, the idea that they are teaching that baptism is necessary to salvation fails. It is far more likely that the passage is speaking of a physical birth (of water) and a spiritual birth (of the Spirit). One must have two births - a physical one and a spiritual one - in order to be saved. This is all the passage tells us.

You should be baptized again. YOur first baptism is meaningless. You didn't participate in it willingly or with understanding as to its spiritual significance. It's time to do it right and as it was done in Scripture. You gotta' get dunked!

Only thing is, I'm not sure which Church to go to and get baptised, also I know this sounds really stupid but I would be a bit nervous - but if its Gods will I will do it. But I can't do it right now, so does that mean at this moment in time I am unsaved.

You're nervous about going to church? Well, you aren't first to feel this way. You do need to be a part of the community of believers, however. I would recommend any evangelical Christian church that clearly and faithfully teaches from the Bible. Some other "CHristian" denominations tend toward ritual, and liturgy, and confession at the expense of thorough Bible teaching and real spiritual transformation. Try to avoid those churches.

Salvation isn't based upon what you feel but upon what you are told in Scripture. Really, the best way to become confident in your salvation is to love God and show that you do by careful obedience to His commands.

The above paragraph encapsulates what you are going through. It's an emotional upheaval that needs some intellectual and spiritual undergirding.

Even the Catholic church teaches a baptism of intention. This is how they explain the thief on the cross, who didn't have the chance to be baptized, except in his own sweat and blood.

The essence of being born again is that we accept Jesus' perfect sacrifice on our behalf. This should be a cause for joy, not doubt, uncertainty and fear. You trusted Him for salvation, doesn't it make sense that He can lead you in lesser things as well? Or that if you do mess up, not intentionally, He can forgive and correct? I sure hope so, because my very existence is predicated on that fact.

I personally believe you do not need to be rebaptized, at least at this time. If it comes down to you clearly sensing the need for it, then fine, it will be a beautiful act of love and obedience. But baptism as a religious exercise out of fear - I don't see how faith is involved in that, or how it would edify you or lead to genuine peace.

The more you take in knowledge of the Lord Jesus - not just intellectual knowledge, but intimate personal knowledge - the more your fears will be alleviated and the more mature and stable your faith will become. Read Jesus' invitation to rest in late Mt 11, and make up your mind to camp out there. Then you won't be chasing religious works, which cannot satisfy. Labor to enter His rest, as Heb 4 tells us.

I will just mainly share verses from the Bible (in addition to the water and Spirit verse you mentioned), that I think are clear on this matter:

Acts 2:38 - "And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
Comment: It looks like the Bible says repentance and baptism are for the forgiveness of sins, and after repenting and being baptized is when you get the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 22:16 "And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’"
Comment: This verse here seems to not only ask why someone would wait, but indicates baptism is for the removal of sins and part of calling on the name of the Lord.

Acts 8:35-83 "Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him."
Comment: It looks like this is the appropriate response to the good news of Jesus, and seems pretty consistent with other Scriptures in the Bible about this topic.

Ephesians 4:4-6 "There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism,"
Comment: If there is only "one baptism" being esteemed, it makes sense to me that baptism would be in harmony description-wise with the rest of the Scriptures.

Galatians 3:26-27 "for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ."
Comment: I kind of think of baptism like I do believing and repentance, where God has called us to obey in all of these areas. These things are central to the coming to follow Christ process. If belief and repentance are there, why should baptism be rejected, if it is there too? In my opinion, I think it's best to follow what God commands.

I think if you have already been baptized as a baby but didn't know what was being done to you, I think you should be baptized on your own free will if you believe in Christ and have repented of your sins.

Baptism is an outward sign of an inward change. Since you weren't saved at your infant baptism, I don't think it is valid. Since you have been born again I think you should be baptized again. I believe you are saved right at this moment but it is something God wants you to do.

I'll also tell you my experience, which was that I didn't receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit until after my baptism. When I came out of that water the Holy Spirit was deeply permeating my being and I have felt His presence every moment since that time.

As soon as you confess Jesus as your Lord and Saviour and you have asked Him to come into your life genuinely. You are saved by Him and He fills you with the Holy Spirit. Water has nothing to do with your salvation. Feeling the Lord touch you is a good sign and I really think you should sto[ worrying about your salvation based on if you get baptized with water or not. It has absolutely nothing to do with it. The ONLY baptism you need for Salvation is the baptism of the Holy Spirit which Jesus does Himself.

If you want to be baptised for your own peace of mind, by all means go ahead BUT water has nothing to do with your salvation. I need to stress that to you so you know and believe the only Salvation we have comes from the Lord, and its through the Holy Spirit.

I was baptized as a child as well and have never had any conviction from the Holy Spirit and He has never put it in my heart to go and get baptized by water again. I believe strongly in my heart that Jesus has saved me and only He matters. His blood that He shed on the cross, and His Spirit that He has put in me.

You need to change your mentality.

Emotions is not to be relied on 24/7 otherwise you may be misled. Sure God allows us to feel His presence and He touches us that we know, feel, sense and can hear Him. BUT you need to be able to trust God without emotions being present, like if you dont feel anything, you need to be able to know, trust and believe that He is still there and always is. God does this. He doesnt want us to rely solely on emotions.

If you keep feeling unsaved because of little things, I suggest you pray to the Lord to help you, to get rid of all the guilt the enemy is trying to place in your life, so that you can enjoy your relationship with God the way you should. One of the reasons we are saved is so that we can be free. There is no condemnation for God's Children

Jesus didn't found any church. We all are His church...His Body and when He comes back, He's not coming back for the catholic church. He's coming back for HIS BODY...those who do the will of the Father who is in Heaven.

I think its best you keep reading the bible and ask God for understanding that comes from Him to you.

As a baby I got baptized as a Catholic.

1999 I 'supposedly' was saved - baptized by immersion into a pentecostal church (Lived a 'very' christian lifestyle, but I was living as a 'false' christian although I actually believed with my whole heart I was saved).

Late 2012 - God made me born again. Not by my own effort but by His power. I prayed regarding rebaptism. Finally got rebaptized after a few months.

Any Christian denomination or church who baptizes in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit can do it. It took me awhile because intially I could not find any who can do it for one reason ormthe other. But if God is for it, He will make the arrangements for you, so not to worry too much.

If you read the new testament, you will be able to see that baptism is done in obedience to God. it is not a requirement to be saved because you are saved by grace through faith (and not by baptism). It is a testimony to your inward conversion, that you now belong to Christ. So technically, you get baptized because you are saved (you do not get baptized to be saved).

Because upon conversion there were big changes that happened within us, basically there will be changes in our life. Loving God, loving the brothers & sisters in the Lord, an aversion to sinning, we start to love the things God love, and start to hate the things God hate, a new relationship with God's word, etc etc.

Of course there will be emotions involved. Bible says when God makes us born again, he takes out our heart of stone and gives us a heart of flesh - that's how now we can love God. The stony heart could never respond to God.

The bible says it involves the heart of flesh, therefore definitely emotion is involved.

You have noted some changes now, if you truly belong to God those changes (good fruits) will remain, and as time goes by, God will help you overcome other things as well.

BUT if you go back to your old sinful lifestyle down the track/ in future as your lifestyle, then probably no inward change has occured in your life at this moment. Because the bible says a good tree bears good fruit (as a style of life).

Pray and ask God to send someone who is a mature christian to baptize you.
You don't need to do it inside a church..just near some living water. gather together two or three witnesses, and thank Him for your new birth.

There is no feeling involving being saved. It's ALL by faith which is OPPOSITE of feelings. Look at the Scripture below because it's what happens when you're saved. The sprinkling of water is the Holy Spirit. Basically when you BELIEVE and CONFESS that Jesus is Lord, Jesus baptizes you with the Holy Spirit and you notice Jesus said I'll give you a new spirit aka born again aka born of a new spirit. BTW that Spirit is the REAL you. So if you have any doubts about being saved, it's simply the devil! Remember it's based on faith = believing what Jesus says and not feelings. Btw the reason why the Scriptures make more sense now is because of your NEW spirit and it's the Holy Spirit within you TEACHING you and GIVING you understanding . Also there's absolutely nothing you can do to make God love you more because when you're born again...God sees you the way He sees Jesus which makes you RIGHTEOUS, PERFECT, without SIN . The only way to get into Heaven is by being born again not good deeda. Sins don't keep anyone out Heaven because God has forgiven EVERYONE of their sins FOREVER. Basically you're are free from hell and sealed in Heaven free of charge, in fact it's a gift from God because you didn't do anything expect just believing Jesus is who He says He is.

The REAL baptism is Jesus baptizing you when you're saved. The water baptism is a symbolism of Jesus death and resurrection and also you just declaring to the world you now belong to God. Your past is dead and now you have a NEW beginning.

I am interpreting your entire post as you are growing spiritually. When one recognizes what is good comes from our Lord then the Holy Spirit is moving within and through you. As far as your church attendance is concerned: why not attend a little of both churches? possibly venture out and experiment with new churches? You will find the appropriate church to help fill you spiritually. I believe in practical Christianity. Doing good works and helping others, rather than just words in the pages of the Bible or what church a person attends. Best of joy and happiness in your spiritual quest. NO! You do NOT have to be baptized again. God did it right the first time.

Here are the benefits of baptism from scripture (reprinted from a study my friend did and with her permission):

WHAT BLESSINGS DO WE RECEIVE FROM GOD IN BAPTISM?

1 Peter 3:20-21. … in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it a few people, eight in all, were saved through water — and this water symbolizes Baptism that now saves you also.

Sme members of my family believe if you are mainly good, and not a rapist or murderer then you are not really a bad sinner with God (like a lot of Christians) Now during my teen years I read born again websites, got scared and confessed but then became agnostic..... Now I read that if you have faith you cannot lose it so I am not sure how tha happened, but maybe due to me not really being committed and saying but not acting on faith.... I don't know.

Anyway, I was baptised a Catholic when I was born, but obviously a few weeks ago I confessed and asked to be born again, believing in my heart, and I have felt touched in my heart and the Word of God makes more sense... Now do I have to be baptised again AND if I don't will I go to hell and not be saved... For isn't there a verse in John tha says you need to be born of water ANd spirit.

Only thing is, I'm not sure which Church to go to and get baptised, also I know this sounds really stupid but I would be a bit nervous - but if its Gods will I will do it. But I can't do it right now, so does that mean at this moment in time I am unsaved.

Also, how do I tell if I am saved as one minute I get doubts, next minute I feel saved and feel touched and emotional. Or are emotions not a good indicator and can be tampered by Satan. All I will say is I do FEEL more love for Jesus and more understanding than ever and more of a willing to change. Whilst I still sin I find sin more of a thing I regret and try not to do now than ever before.

Lord I ask you help this baby christian to find YOU and release the anointing over his life send him helper and the comforter to baptise him, in Jesus' mighty precious name AMEN!

OP You don't need water.
When you have the Holy Spirit, you are good. Let it sink in you that God holds nothing against you because you have not been dipped in water.
The only helper and comforter there is IS the Holy Spirit. He is in you, and you don't need water to have Him. You only need JESUS and He's done His Work in you and will continue if you TRUST in Him
You are a child of God through Jesus Christ. Stop worrying and just enjoy the ride with JESUS

You need to go where the Bible is truly and clearly preached.
