I am trying to find the true meaning of 1 Corinthians 11:1-15. I started a thread about it here:

www.christianforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34038

I think I am misunderstanding the meaning of this passage. Please help. I hope I will not start further trouble regarding this issue.

"Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.
Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you.
But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.
Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head. But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for she is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved.
For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head.
For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.
For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; for indeed man was not created for the woman's sake, but woman for the man's sake.
Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.
For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God.
Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering."

hello :)

Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head. But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for she is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved.

I think that this phrase is clear.

Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.

this one also. but there's also this one, that often trouble people :
For her hair is given to her for a covering.

I think it's natural for women to have long hair (especially at Paul's time). So why talk about it if not because a veil is needed ?

The hair cannot be the veil, otherwise this phrase wouldn't mean anything ! :
For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off

I think that the last phrase means that nature teaches us to have a veil ; therefore women have to cover their head when they pray.
And men must be uncovered.

That's how it works in my church, and i think it's for the glory of our Lord. When i cover my head, i do it for the angels.

Out of this passage i've also deduced that it's great to have long hair for a girl, so i have very very long hair :)

There are two meanings of 'Head' here. The first is the physical head, the second is the spiritual head. The spiritual head is also the seat of his honor.

In Paul's day if a man failed to uncover his head it was a sign of dishonor and lack of respect. When they uncovered their head it signified respect and submission.

Since Christ honored God, man is to honor Christ, and woman is to honor her husband. Some see the term head in the sense of authority.

Conclusion: Some may take the verse litterally to mean if you're a woman you should wear a head covering. Others believe it means a woman should show respect for her husband at all times by submitting to his authority, not by a particular type of attire, but by living Godly lives.

Hi Bruno, I will attempt to unveil this a little bit for you :)

1 Corinthians 11:3
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

Previous scripture states that the head of every man is Christ, We should keep in mind that Christ is the light.

John 12:46
I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me may not abide in the darkness

1 Corinthians 11:4
Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head.

Here again if Christ is the head of a man. Then to cover the head would be to hide the light of Christ. It is a dishonor to God to hide the light of Christ.

Luke 11:33
No man, when he hath lighted a lamp, putteth it in a cellar, neither under the bushel, but on the stand, that they which enter in may see the light.

Now going back to 1 Corinthians 11:3 again because it's important to keep what it says in mind.

1 Corinthians 11:3
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

We should also keep in mind that women were told to keep silent in church, and told to learn from their husbands at home. I've heard it said often that this was because women back then would ask so many questions that it only disrupted the services.

1 Corinthians 14:34-35
let the women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as also saith the law. And if they would learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home: for it is shameful for a woman to speak in the church.

This shows us that women learned from their husbands. Back then women didn't learn to read or write. There are still some places in the world today where they don't, and are subject only to the teachings of their husbands.

1 Corinthians 11:5-6
But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonoreth her head; for it is one and the same thing as if she were shaven. For if a woman is not veiled, let her also be shorn: but if it is a shame to a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be veiled.

The reason for a women keeping her head covered in a sense would be because she was learning from her husband. Instead of by being able to read Gods Word itself, since most women back then never learned how to read. Keeping that in mind... If a women was to be taught wrong by her husband, it would be a shame and disgrace to her to be unveiling those teachings to others

I hope this helps you understand it a little better what this passage is all about. I just went over the first few scriptures here, maybe understanding them will help you to understand the rest of it also.

Well when i cover my head i said it, i do it for the angels. That's respect.
By the way, i can read, and i'm doing high studies so i don't think there's a link between veil and knowledge...

I don't have to worry about covering my head. I have Jesus to do that for me. It is covered by the blood he shed for me.

I'm happy to hear you can read and are doing high studies.

I myself have learned that sometimes a simple dictionary or thesaurus can come in quite handy.

Did you know that the word veil means more than just something you cover your head with?

Check out what the thesaurus has to say about the word unveil.

Synonyms OPEN 2, disclose, display, expose, reveal, unclothe, uncover

Synonyms REVEAL 1, betray, disclose, discover, divulge, tell, unbosom, unclose, uncover, uncurtain

I too went through this and had trouble.

Paul is using things the Corinthians did to make a point: Men and women are to be dressed accordingly in Church. Men are to head it. Women are to not. Man was created in the image of God, woman was created from man.

I may be wrong, this is what I came up with.

That makes sense to me! The thing about Gods Word is that each time you read it, the more you get out of it. There are many physical aspects to it, but along with those are also Spiritual aspects.

With the Holy Spirit revealing the hidden truths of each scripture it can be quite the experience while reading it. You can look at just one little scripture and get an amazing number of lessons from it. Then you just sit there in Awe and thankfulness for what the Holy Spirit has revealed and just how powerful the Word of God realy is.
