Purpose of prophecy

The divine purpose of prophecy was to prepare the world for the coming of Jesus Christ and can be stated in a threefold summation:
First, the purpose of prophecy was to prepare the world for the coming of Jesus Christ into the world.
In his address before king Agrippa Paul mentioned this fact as the ultimate purpose of prophecy. He said: “Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.” -Acts 26:22,23
That this was the preparatory purpose of prophecy is further seen in the use that Paul made of these prophecies in his epistles.
Paul applied this principle:
“For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” -Rom 15:4

This passage clearly indicates that “the things written,” the O.T. prophesies, have their application to us in the N.T. Prophecy was an O.T. preparation for the New Testament truth.

Secondly, the purpose of prophecy was to prepare the world for the spiritual nature of the teaching of Jesus.
On this point Peter speaks: “Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into” --1 Peter 1:9-12
The point in 1 Peter is that the prophets prepared the world for the distinction between the temporal and the spiritual concept. The kingdom of the O.T. was a temporal thing, but the kingdom of Jesus Christ, which is the antitype of the typical kingdom of the O.T., is the spiritual in all of its aspects. One had its temporal settings and its temporal surroundings, while the other exists in its spiritual factors.
This is why Jesus said: “And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” –Luke 17:20,21.
It is inside everyman who is inside it. When the man is in the kingdom, the kingdom is in the man; if it is in him, he is in it. That is the spiritual feature of the kingdom of Christ.
But Jesus said that “…the kingdom cometh not with observation…” Neither the transit of the surveyor nor the theodolite of the astronomer can measure the boundaries of the kingdom of God. Its territory is neither geographical nor astronomical…it is “within you.” This is why obedience is required in order to enter it. Hence Jesus said: “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” --Matt 7:21
The preparatory purpose of prophecy was to point out the spiritual aspect of the teaching of Jesus with reference to the kingdom of God in the world; that it was not the be temporal, earthly, worldly kingdom.

Third, the purpose of prophecy was to bear witness to the truths of Christianity. Discoursing to the Jews upon His mission into the world in John 5 Jesus referred to the witness of the scriptures of the O.T. to the truths of the new.
“And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” -- John 5:37-39

Occasionally, it is said that we understand the New Testament in the light of the Old Testament, but the reverse is truer – we understand the Old Testament in the light of the New Testament. One thing we know, the inspired apostles had to point out to the Jews themselves what their own scriptures meant. The Jews believed their prophets and their prophecies, but these same Jews were mistaken about what their prophecies meant, and they were wrong in their application of the prophecies. The inspired men of the New Testament had to say to the Jews, “This is what was spoken by the prophets.” Dipping back into the Old Testament, and taking a certain prophecy, in the New Testament writer would say to the Jew, “this is that,” in which case “that” was “this” and this was that when a New Testament writer so applied it.
The prophecy meant what inspiration intended at the time it was spoken, regardless of the ancient Jewish misunderstanding or modern postponement theories.

The New Testament interpretation proves that the Old Testament prophecy has been fulfilled. (I will develope this thought later.)

Charlesj if I could shake your hand I would. You have a wonderful way with words, so clear and easily understood and above all "rightly dividing the Word of Truth". That second point of your, the purpose of prophecy. Well worded! "the prophets prepared the world for the distinction between the temporal and the spiritual". This 2nd point immediately reminded me of the words in Hebrews 11:10 speaking of Abraham the writer stated, "for he was looking for the city which has foundations, who architect and builder is God". And some unsaved man may look at that verse and think the land of Israel. But the writer's point is that the "promised land" was not the fulfillment of God's promises, "All these died in faith, without receiving the promises...". "But as it is, they desire a better country, that is a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them" (11:16). And what is that city? Hebrew 12:22 "But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to the myriads of angels". We are already there!

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, we enter a city made without hands, a city that has all the redeemed from the time of Adam until the present. . . and is growing daily, Praise His Name!
This city is "from above and is of the free woman and is not in bondange." The bondwoman has been cast out. (Gal 4:21-31)

With respect to divine revelation, the believer stands complete in Christ, and those born of the word of faith shall live and abide forever (1Peter 1:23).
The Bible is complete and has no need for modern day prophets. The power and purpose of scripture in every age is the establishing and maintaining of the new Israel born of Christ; Abraham's spiritual seed (Gal 3:16). The total responsibility of man is entering and living in harmony with this new spiritual commonwealth. It all begins by a spiritual rebirth (John 3:1-6). To inherit with Abraham, demands that one be of his seed.
"For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise." Gal 3:26-29

As a new covenant child of our Lord, we are to hear Jesus (Heb 1:1ff) and follow His Words.

You indeed speak the truth charlesj and your conviction on the completion of scripture is so right on! "And so we have the prophetic word made sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts" (II Peter 1:19). In our day truth is devalued to the place where everyone's "prophetic experience" (dreams, visions, ect..) is expected to be honored regardless of doctrine. The Apostle Peter pointed to the "prophetic word", the Scripture (verses 20,21) as foretold by our Lord in the Gospel of John 16:13. How Firm A Foundation !!!

Are you crazy! Has anyone been called to the ministry? who called you? If God didn't youre in trouble. If he did how did he tell you.

Why would the creator of the world only speak to men through a book put together by man. Is there some bibolotry going on here

Anyone with an ounce of sense knows the party line you speak from. will someone please read the book with the only purpose in mind to see what it says.

For Billhabing:

quote:
"Are you crazy! Has anyone been called to the ministry? who called you? If God didn't youre in trouble. If he did how did he tell you."

I will break your questions down:
1. "are you crazy" --- yes (just ask my wife of 38 years)
2. "has anyone called you to the ministry?" - yes
3. "if he did how did he tell you" -
"whereunto he called you through our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye were taught, whether by word, or by epistle of ours." -2 Thes 2:14ff

My friend, I don't know what your problem is. Please be a little more clear on your question(s).
As far as "the book" (The Bible) goes, I will stand on it. I just carried on a 2 month study with a Mormon and he didn't think to much of "the book." Are you a Mormon? If not, by your standards, is it okay to get special revelations as did Joe (Joseph Smith)? Or, anyone else?

You know, when you do away with New Covenant that is sealed by the Blood of Jesus and start adding "special revelations" you
open up Pandoras box to all kinds of trash. For example, look at The Book of Mormon... it is trash!
God knew that man would come along and add to and take away from His Word. That is why He sealed the New Covenant with the Blood of His Son.

"For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it. For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives."
--Heb 9:16,17

May the Lord be with you as you study, praise Him, and live with Him all the days of your life.

Excellent response Charlesj. God not only called you but He also has filled you with wisdom. I expect a rich and full ministry for you. "Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the churh and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen"
