• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

In February of this year (2009) I found out that I have type 2 diabetes and thought it was the end of the planet as I knew it. Through prayer, God, and the internet search on diabetes I'm coming to terms with it. Diet sodas including Diet Dr. Pepper are pretty good.

My doctor told me today I am type ll. I have tried for a year to manage without drugs and over past few months my # rose to over 300 after a 8 hr fast. Not good.
So now I am Metformin 1 X day. Eating healthier and getting more exercise seem to be in order. Check sugars and fasting sugars every day. Jim

I'm insulin resistant with high cholesterol. My blood sugar is normal. What I am doing is sticking to whole grain foods paired with a protein (fish, chicken, turkey and very sparingly lean beef). I try to have a vegetable and fruit with lunch and dinner. I have cereal or lite yogurt for breakfast with a fruit. I've been trying to keep my calories at or under 1200 a day. I'm on week 3 and I've lost 2 pounds. For drinks I go with water, tea and skim milk. I do have gatorade for lunch too. If I want a sweet I limit it to one a week.

If you have a high fiber diet you'll notice you don't get hungry. My mom told me that and it's working :) If I want to snack I have a bag of Cheerios I'll nibble on (not eating the whole thing in a sitting of course). It's not a hateful diet :) I just have to watch when wanting to eat out on what I'm allowed to have. I am skipping my work's Christmas party because I know it'll be impossible to know what is in the food.

For those recently diagnosed with high sugar levels, I recommend the South Beach Diet for helping normalize glucose levels. My christmas cookie season induced levels were about 280 2 hours post meal before I started SBD and 500mg of Glucophage twice daily.

I've been on SBD for one week, trying my best not to 'cheat', exercising 20 to 30 min a day, (exercise bike, aerobics, Dance Dance Revolution - don't laugh!). My morning test is 90-110 and my 2 hour post meal is ranging about 140-150.

South Beach has a 2 week phase of no processed carbs. No bread, no pasta, no rice. You can have beans, all the veggies you can eat, some dairy/cheese and lean meats/seafood. After the two weeks you can either stay in Phase 1 or go to Phase 2 which reintroduces 'smart' carbs, low GI stuff (think whole wheat pasta, high fiber bread, etc).

I haven't ate this healthy in years, that's for sure. I was a fast food aholic, chinese buffet, chips, cookies, you know what I mean. The weight is coming off (about a pound every couple of days) and I am not 'starving'. The glucophage is 'no alcohol' and I'm a homebrewer/craft beer nut, so that has been tough but I've been 'dry' since December 20th.

I'm looking for other folks to talk about diabetes and weight loss with if anyonese else wants support.

I recently found out I have diabetes. I've been taking Metmorfin 5 mg. It has helped me to loose a lot of weight which am very happy for:) My Mom has been diabetic for 35 yrs, she takes insulin. It's very hard sticking to the right diet:( I am declaring and decreeing that one day soon God will completely heal me from diabetes
