The decisions and declarations announced on November 22 raise concerns for many Egyptians and for the international community. One of the aspirations of the revolution was to ensure that power would not be overly concentrated in the hands of any one person or institution. The current constitutional vacuum in Egypt can only be resolved by the adoption of a constitution that includes checks and balances, and respects fundamental freedoms, individual rights, and the rule of law consistent with Egypt's international commitments. We call for calm and encourage all parties to work together and call for all Egyptians to resolve their differences over these important issues peacefully and through democratic dialogue.

Sadly, it was predictable. Islamists gaining power and then turning democracy on its head is hardly unprecedented in history. I just hope the huge pressure on Morsi from judges, liberals and even Christians proves enough for him to reverse his decision to assume absolute authority.

Take religion out of the picture.

It takes a true leader to establish a goverment of limited power. Most commonly to the victor go the spoils/power. The portrait changes, the abuse of power is commonly the same or worse.
Power corrupts, ultimate power corrupts ultimately. When you are the leader of the successful rebellion, you have ultimate power.

The Egyptian judicial system is/was hardly a model for justice. Mubarak was not exactly Abe Lincoln.
