I have heard that phrase all my life. I wonder where it came from???? What does it mean??? If it means that life will become richer as you age, then on one point it could be correct and another it is way off base. My life is richer because of maturity and a deeper relationship with God, but on the other hand.... it seems like tin years to me and my tin is rusting!

I think the phrase holds many assumptions. If you have your health, if you have a nice retirement savings, if your adult children are truly adults and don't need your assistance, THEN this is the time to travel the world and to indulge yourself in ways that you couldn't when you worked and had the responsibilities of family.

Yeah, just a few ifs there. As Forrest Gump might say, "Golden is as golden does." :)

It is more like the wonder years - set your feet on the floor and wonder if you are going to stay upright. My husband and I (he is 80 - I am 77) get up every morning and laugh at each other trying to get these ole bones going. I have no idea where the saying came from - It reminds me of the leaves as they turn golden in the fall and they gently sway in the breeze as they fall - we are gently swaying in the hand of Jesus until we go home to be with Him.

Sharon,
I am not as old as you are, but at almost 67 I don't try to hide my age. I know I am closer to going home than I was at 40! I don't sway yet, but when I get up I sound like a bowl of Rice Krispies with milk on them! Snap, crackle, Pop!:D

I have an elderly Aunt who is suffering from Alzheimers.
She said many years ago as her illness progressed, that the only thing 'golden' about the 'golden years' was her PEE! :p
I have a better understanding of her meaning now ;) ....and some days, have to agree ^_^

Maybe it has something to do with the precious metal gold, one that must be separated from other elements and refined for full value. Impurities are burned off in the refining process. I could also see this comparison in talking about the maturing of a Christian. Nice thread.

You got me thinking (and not only of golden pee!) so I dug around and this is the best I could come up with, from wiki.answers.com: Dictionary.com does not provide a word origin but notes the phrase emerged in the 1950s. Unconfirmed sources say that Merrill Lynch Investments used the phrase in an advertising campaign. The traditional golden anniversary occurs at 50 years of marriage, a mark that few couples would have seen prior to the 1950s, and golden years might bring up thoughts of people of sufficient age to have a golden anniversary, which would then imply people over about 65 or 70 years.

Kind of a let down, eh?

Tom,

I think I must be a golden nuget because I have been in the fire many times. I am not the pure element yet, so the Lord fires me so often to burn off the imputities in my life. I like this idea of Golden years!

Amen! - I like being God's little nugget:

Revelation 3:17-20 KJV Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
