In the Our Daily Bread thread we spoke about how Jesus is the Bread of Life. And how he was the Word of God come to us in the flesh.
We then looked at, in the Breaking Bread Together thread, the aspects of how when we study and read Gods Word together we are breaking bread together in a Spiritual manner.
Here are links to those two threads in case you haven't read them yet. As this thread goes hand in hand with the others.
Our Daily Bread
Breaking Bread Together
Let's now take a look at the deeper Spiritual side of drinking wine together. Something we are told to do along with the breaking of bread.
John 2:3-4
And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
Have you ever wondered why Jesus turned water into wine? Ever wonder about the comment he made in the above scripture "mine hour has not yet come" before doing so. This was simply to signify things that were yet to come. His hour, that He was speaking of was when He would receive His Glory.
The following scripture should help us understand more about the Living Waters, that are of the Holy Spirit, only to be received by the blood of Christ. The Holy Spirit being the Spirit of truth, would be the true water that would later be turned into wine. Hence the phrase "becoming drunk in the spirit"
John 7:37-39
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
If we continue on with this next scripture we can see that Jesus is speaking of his blood, and refers to drinking the fruit of the vine, wine is what comes from the fruit of the vine. But we can only receive this new wine in recognition of the blood he shed for us.
Matthew 26:27-29
And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.
Jesus now sits in His Father's Kingdom. We now have full access to the new wine, which is also in a spiritual sense the living waters he spoke of that we should receive. By the shedding of His blood.
I have always found it interesting that both blood and water came from Jesus side when it was pierced. Even in this there is a greater significance.
John 19:34
But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
