Hey everyone noob here,

Just wanted to introduce myself to this sub-forum (while still remaining anonymous ;)). I'm 100% Catholic but a long way from becoming a saint. I'm married with children. I used to be a liberal Democrat, but now I'm a conservative Republican. I don't have any pets, but I used to have three dogs that I cared a lot about (sad story, don't want to go there). I know what it's like to be poor. And I know what it's like to go through a divorce and an annulment. I grew up liking rock music and can probably win at trivial pursuit if the category is rock music from the 1970's - 1995. But now the music I listen to is more mellow like Andrea Bocelli and broadway musicals. I like riding my bicycle when I get the chance, and I would ride it to work but the road to work doesn't allow pedestrians or bicycle riders. Well, off to confession I go. See you guys later.

Hey.

Nice to meet you.

Quick Question:

Do you get paid by the word, the post or the hour ?

Just wondering.

As someone with a long history here, and as someone who tends to have people fiercely devoted to her in real life--I just wanted to say, that this sort of vulnerability and transparency..well, it goes a loooong way toward people listening to and considering what you have to say. Even if they disagree with it.

Hope you enjoy your stay in OBOB. There are some truly amazing people here! Be kind and play nice. Even if you have an immutable truth you must convey. Compassion for others that they can sense and feel, gets you heard far more clearly than when they feel like they're being yelled at.

I am glad I opened this.

I would have thought we had nothing in common, but we do. I am also married with children now in their early twenties to mid-thirties.

And I also love Andrea Bocelli and Broadway musicals. When my Dad was still alive I visited NY more than I do now. He's been gone 14 months and I haven't been there since his funeral--when he was in his 90's I would fly in several times a year.

If you live in NY you must visit broadwaybox.com, the best way to get half-price tickets without waiting on line.

We do have some family in NY, but our big trip this summer was to Asia, where one of my sons lives, and that kind of broke our travel budget.

I can well understand why New Yorkers wouldn't get excited about visiting the Bible Belt to see me, although family members who have visited have all liked it here (that's because several years of hard work and research have allowed me to find the best parts of it and share it with them, while I didn't have anyone to show me the ropes.)

I guess I should take that as a complement that you think so much of my writing skills that you think I'm getting paid.
I don't get paid for posting here at all, but I wish I did. How about you?

Hi
Nice to meet you.

I am hopeless at musical trivia. Most of the time i have to ask someone who is singing - even though i love the song.
I heard a song - i think the Eagles?
Can't find a better man.... as i was driving today. Havent heard that for a while.

Wasn't it Steve Howe? I guessed without Googling. Am I right?

Peter Banks. Banks had already gone and gone by the time the band hit it big, though. Steve Howe is the guy who played lead guitar on most of their 1970s classics, and Trevor Rabin is the guy who played lead guitar on most of their 1980s classics (And wrote "Owner of a Lonely Heart").

Banks wasn't bad in his own right, though, and is actually the guy who came up with the name "Yes" for the band. :) But probably only the third best lead guitarist in Yes history, which just goes to show how much talent has been in that band, and how much turn-over they've had. I think the official count is 18 or 19 different band members, and some have had two or three separate stints (In, then out, then in, then out, then in again).

Tony Kaye, the original keyboardist, left in time for Rick Wakeman, their best known keyboardist, to take over, and then came back in time for their biggest two 80s albums. In the 00s, Rick's son Oliver Wakeman had actually replaced him for a while (Not directly, though, some guys in between), until they were able to real in Geoff Downes from Asia (Right now Howe and Downes are actually in both Yes and Asia simultaneously), who had already been in the band once previously. Howe has quit at least twice. :)

And they're still going. Yes had a new studio album in the summer of 2011. Sadly, Jon Anderson is no longer with them, though.

Don't know if he was the original, but he was the best.

He was and is pretty incredible. I'm more of a Rabin guy most of the time, but it depends on my mood. Howe can do these beautiful melodies that take you off to a mystical place, and Rabin is a bit more of a shredder who can do incredible rock and roll riffs with an 80s flair (Though Howe did some 80s-style power cords with Asia, and Rabin has a solo album that came out recently where he plays some very mellow stuff- so they're both pretty multifaceted).

Just want to shout out props for some yes. rulez!

Awesome. :) Wouldn't have pegged you for a Yes fan. Love them- actually have all of their studio albums and some of the solo stuff some former members have done.

Actually been listening to a lot of Black Sabbath today. Interesting trivia fact: Rick Wakeman actually played keyboard as a session player on one of their album tracks. Yes happened to be recording an album in the same studio at the same time as Sabbath, and Ozzie grabbed Rick in the hallway to play on something. Rick's son Adam (Not to be confused with his other son Oliver ;) ) has actually toured with Ozzie playing keyboards when needed on some of his solo gigs, and I think even a few Black Sabbath shows (Though not as an official member of the band).

I just downloaded 'Leave it' to my iPod yesterday! :D

Welcome to OBOB, FF. Sincerely. :) Obviously, we have not had a cordial beginning, but some of my dearest friends started out that way. Just ask MikeK. ;) And it is true that I am uber-protective of those I love. Like a mama bear. But, I promise that I am not normally a meanie. God bless and keep you!

Peace be with you!

Awesome. :) One of the things I love about Yes is how diverse their music is. They've got those 80s pop-rock songs that are incredibly catchy, some fairly straight forward 70s classic rock, and some really long progressive 20 minute epics with a mystical flair. Genesis is kind of similar in that respect.

Love Genesis, love Phil Collins, love Peter Gabriel.

Me, too. The first song I have a clear memory of hearing on the radio as a child was Phil Collins' "One More Night". Have all the Phil Collins solo studio albums and Genesis studio albums. Still working on Gabriel's solo stuff, though I have the important ones. ;)

I've been kind of getting into a slightly more obscure band called Marillion lately, which had some stuff in the 80s that reminds me a bit of Genesis.
